Just that really

What's ethical then? Because I've no reason to doubt that some of the more expensive brands produce in exactly the same way but charge big and pocket the difference

I feel the same.
It's also all well and good to say you should spend £50 on a top, and £80 on jeans or whatever, but that's all I could buy twice a year and nothing else.
I shop at Shein, Primark, Asda and ASOS with some sale bits from Superdry.

cottagegardenflower · 15/05/2022 21:49

I wouldn't buy dresses, tops or anything else as I have plenty of clothes and I prefer to try on. It just the difficult swimwear issue I'm having and swimwear does seem to have good reviews

thinking of a swimsuit. free returns though

I ordered a dress and a swimsuit in the same size. Dress was perfect and a bargain in the sale. Swimsuit looked great when it arrived but would have fitted me when I was 12.
Photograph and reviews said sizing was good so no idea what happened there.

The fashion industry is generally pretty awful (so buying as little new clothing as possible is ideal but I appreciate it’s not that simple), but some brands are worse than others and Shein is really, really bad.

there are lots of Websites out there that research and publish companies’ ethical credentials

glamosaurus · 15/05/2022 22:01

No it's utter shite and transported across the world. Why did you ask?

1Week · 16/05/2022 00:08

CorneliusVetch do you recommend any website in particular?

I bought two dresses from Shein for the first time, one fit true and one was cut weird, too tight across the top and oceans of fabric in the skirt. The material used was thicker and better than I expected though. I'm inclined to think they all use environmentally unfriendly fabric, they all treat their workers badly and they are all shipped from the far East. Though I suppose its all a matter of degrees

LadyLothbrook · 16/05/2022 00:19

Would rather trot round in rags than buy from Shein.

M&S is one of the better high street brands. H&M is okay too. Primark could do better but is miles ahead of Shein.

WowStarsWow · 16/05/2022 09:26

You can check the ethical and eco credentials of brands on the Good on You website/app. Better than being lazy and assuming they’re all the same. They aren’t and Shein is demonstrably one of the worst.
but as long as people can get their cheap hauls of plastic clothing flown across the world, who cares right?

WowStarsWow · 16/05/2022 09:29

It’s not hard to do a tiny bit of research.

So basically it's ok for children to make clothes and for all the returns to get dumped in landfill as long as you have a nice cossie?

Not picking on you individually OP there are plenty of other people on this thread saying the same thing.

Not many affordable shops are 100% ethical but like with everything in life, it's choosing something with some balance.

DialsMavis · 16/05/2022 09:44

i used them for a while and was hit and miss, 2 brilliant items and some utter crap.

I was aware they were dodgy ethically but ignored it by saying to myself "retailers are all as bad as each other".

But then due to a thread on here I read about how bad they are and stopped buying. Still not quite managed to kick my Decathlon habit though, who I think may be equally as vile ethically.

Ntsure · 16/05/2022 09:47

Look at the reviews pwith photos, most of the stuff has reviews left with photos and I find that’s a good way to gauge what they look like irl

MiddleNameJane · 16/05/2022 09:50

I buy most of my clothes secondhand and have noticed more and more Shein garments on charity shop rails, often unworn. The fabrics feel really weird, slimy and sweaty - just rock-bottom quality with the ethics to match.

that's just an info graphic with a logo on the bottom. The source appears to be edited out? It's not clear anyway and could be from anywhere.

The problem is tiny bits of research can be misleading and big bits of research can be very time-consuming. Trade offs have to be made and no one can manage it all.

orchidsunrise · 16/05/2022 12:37

"Trade offs have to be made"

Do you have a child? Would you think it ok for them to work in a factory because trade offs have to be made?

Fair enough, here's the source so you can make up your own mind, but are you suggesting that it's completely made up??

Shein is awful. Don't buy from them.

fantasmasgoria1 · 16/05/2022 12:50

I have bought several times and have been happy with 90% of my purchases. The hair accessories are so much bett than anything you can buy in the shops. The stationery is really good too. I have bought pet bowls etc which are good quality and generally most things are good. I always look at the sizing on each item although for example you may buy a medium based on sizing but when it arrives its generally bigger. The zip lock bags things come in I reuse for quite a few things and they last ages.

cannaethink · 16/05/2022 13:01

I like their swimwear, particularly the tops that are like a pull on sports bra.

Are you typing this on a phone? Are you aware of the way the necessary rare earth minerals are mined by child slaves in the Congo? That's not ok either.
Some people have a phone but don't eat meat. Some buy fast fashion but don't fly. Nobody in the modern world can do it all, and that's what I mean about trade offs.

Fernsinthegarden · 16/05/2022 13:57

Sainsburys have some nice swimwear in at the moment.
I’ve also noticed CupShe pops up a lot for swimwear, does anyone have experience with them? Been tempted by a few pieces!

silverbubbles · 16/05/2022 14:00

My daughter aged 14 has alot of Shein Swimwear and I think its great quality for the super cheap prices. I however would not even consider looking/ trying on this sort of swimwear. I am 50 and my body needs a bit more support.

if you usual go for fairly skimpy 'triangle' type bikinis then go for it!

Mass produced, cheap, fast fashion rumoured to be produced in sweatshops using child labour and shipped from China. Honestly the worse kind of shopping you can do if you are at all concerned about the environment we all live in and human rights.

My DD has bought from them before though, she is no longer a child so I have no say where she shops, and some items she has liked, but most of them have gone to charity shops as they are simply just weird looking and not at all like the pictures. She did try and return items the first time, and she sent them off but has never got any money back. Must be 18 months or so ago now. She chased and chased, but got nowhere. I think because it's so cheap they assume people will give up on chasing payments as it's not worth their time eventually.

This

Ntsure · 16/05/2022 14:48

People who can afford not to shop at fast fashion places will be vocal about how unethical it is. Because it’s an easy thing for them to forgo.
however I really doubt they keep that same energy for all other aspects of life.
you can’t really expect consumers to be the ones to change everything- people will do what they can afford and tbh in this day and age you will find it almost impossible to only consume ethically sourced goods.
reeks of people driving their 4x4s to Waitrose to refill their Tupperware of pasta and claim they are bothered about environmental issues.
