How does your teenage boy have his hair. Need ideas

My ds 15 has shoulder length hair which is wavy and wears in a pony tail/bun thing. He feels ugly he says :-( and is asking me things like will he ever get a girlfriend :-( he is lovely looking but of course he won't listen from me, I know hair isn't necessarily going to change how he feels within himself but we need some ideas. He's not into looking ultra trendy, that's not him. I have no idea what kind of hair cuts are 'in' now.

Thanks in advance!

My 17 year old has a mullet, dyed dark brown. I cut it for him as he finds it hard to explain to barbers what he wants (plus I'm free!). I'm getting quite good at it now.
He is muttering about a semi perm now, which i think we used to call a demi wave.
He had just got a place at college on a fashion and textiles course so his style choices are more adventurous than average though

Bunce1 · 23/04/2022 23:19

Llama or mullet here too. Some skin fades but not as common.

mullets for the skater older kids. Llama for the youngs.

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 23/04/2022 23:23

I've got a DD, no ds. Apparently, the basics have a fade, the emos have curtains and the 'others' have mullets or long. DD is an other.

I'm laughing at this thread!

DS1 17 is a very cool individual- think Urban Outfitters/ 90s Hipster 😆. He's growing his, recently got it cut at my hairdresser's, like a training cut. It's sort of 70s cool, flicky, collar length! He flirted with curtains but apparently everyone has them😀. Apparently if it doesn't grow the way he wants it, he'll get a mullet in the summer 🙈.

DS2 15 is completely different- not cool at all and his own sense of 'I don't care' style (think clashing colours and BRIGHT). He has a buzz cut- number 2/3 all over (after having a man bun, which I loved) and actually really suits it. I think because he's tall and rangey and sporty he gets away with it.

Boys! DS3 is 10 and looks like a short surfer - because I still have power over his hair😆

Puffalicious · 23/04/2022 23:48

PS What's wrong with a man bun? Would he go for that? I love a man bun.

Howmanysleepsnow · 23/04/2022 23:50

That llama looks like DS16!!!!

Kanaloa · 23/04/2022 23:57

My oldest has a fade - his hair is thick and curly on top so it looks nice but it needs regular barber trips!

I will say though if he is saying he feels ugly etc that sounds a bit deeper/more worrying than just a haircut. Poor lad. I wonder if someone has said something or something has happened to make him feel that way?

Kanaloa · 23/04/2022 23:59

I do think looks are more varied now though. When I was young everyone had the same flat ironed hair but now it seems like there’s lots of different ways to look cool. I think as always the coolest looking people are those who obviously feel cool.

JengaTower · 24/04/2022 00:05

Messy mops seem to be a thing now esp for boys with naturally curly hair they're just letting it go a bit wild at the moment. Some very unusual styles around at the moment when my teen DC have their friends over.

AlexanderTheGreat · 24/04/2022 00:05

DS16 has a buzz cut which wouldn’t be my choice but it’s his head.

A young Stalin is both popular and flattering. Short sides, long on top.

DS1 has mixed race Afro hair, he wears it quite ringletty (is that even a word?!). He has it close shaven around the edges and a mass of curls on top

DS2 has a the typical number 1 on the side, 2 on top.

I'm not very good at describing hairstyles obviously BlushGrin

Several of DS’s friends - and their older brothers - are currently sporting mullets. Proper, deliberate mullets.

apparently it’s a good look. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes! Lots of DS1 (18)'s friends have mullets!

JengaTower · 24/04/2022 00:07

Not really many skin fades here any more that I've noticed

IWishIWasABaller · 24/04/2022 00:09

My sons friends are a mix of mullets, skin fades and cheeky nandos hairdos (permed on top !) Also one or two have long ponytails with the sides completely shaved . I think boys these days wear their hair whatever way they like and no one cares to be honest

ArtVandalay · 24/04/2022 00:09

My teen had his lockdown grown man-bun chopped the other week in favour of a mullet.

I was secretly aghast at the prospect, but it actually looks really good.

NoThanksThough · 24/04/2022 00:14

Mullets are really popular with a lot of teen girls here too.

Puffalicious · 24/04/2022 00:15

I'm hysterical at the young Stalin😃 (it is SO not okay to say this but he was totally gorgeous 🙈).

One of the boys I teach, 16, has a full-on huge afro and it is awesome. He's very tall and cool, so that helps, but it really is bloody amazing.

Peakypolly · 24/04/2022 00:19

It is all about Peaky Blinder style round here.

Our teenager feels the same 😂I’m really hoping “pornstar” moustaches last fashionable in the 1970s don’t come back into fashion too!

NoThanksThough · 24/04/2022 00:35

@Arucanafeather I have some bad news. The moustaches are creeping back in too Grin

Lots of young men on tik tok with mullets AND moustaches and I've seen a few in real life.

😱🤣 nooooooooo! Say it isn’t so! I’m going to have to practice keeping my mouth firmly shut🤐… that’sxa lot harder for me than I though it would be… will be good practice for if I become a MIL or grandparent 🤣

I was stunned to catch 5 minutes of Married at First Sight Australia the other week (not my bag) and 3 of the men had deliberate moustaches- young men! 😱

PomegranateSeed · 24/04/2022 09:36

My 14 year old has lovely wavy hair cut like Timothy Chalamet
