What shoes would you wear with this dress?

I have been invited to an evening do for a very small wedding. Its just immediate family during the day with close friends invited for informal drinks and a buffet in the evening. The venue is a small country house hotel.

I've bought this dress in the sale from Hush and I love it, but I'm struggling with shoes. I'm a bit rubbish with heels, but can just about cope with block heels or wedges. Would flat shoes look ridiculous? I dress fairly casually most of the tune and so would normally be in trainers or (in the summer) birkenstocks.

Ideas gratefully received!

Me? I would go for matching shoes, small court heel
I can't wear heels either (over 40 years in "proper" nursery shoes,)

KittenKong · 16/04/2022 15:59

Of go for something like a ballet pump. I can’t stand having sore feet!

Reflectiveshine322 · 16/04/2022 16:01

Definitely wear a heal. Black blocks would work.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:07

Flat shoes would be absolutely fine and there’s no need to wear heels to make yourself or an outfit look great! I’d go with pointed toe, maybe a mule. But any flat shoe would do nicely as long as it’s something you love and feel good in.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:08

And I was a committed very high heel wearer until recently. Not so much anymore as my body has started saying no thanks and I’m listening! So I’m not just anti heels...

Maireas · 16/04/2022 16:09

Flat shoes never look ridiculous, and often more chic. M&S are doing a good dupe of Chanel flats at the moment, I haven't tried them on, but they look good. I'll find a link.

Maireas · 16/04/2022 16:12

£39.50 - just a suggestion. If they're not your thing they have plain or silver.

@Maireas 👑👋👑 Absolutely right! No one has to wear heels in order to not look ridiculous!

In fact @JoanThursday I’d argue that it’s almost impossible to look effortlessly chic if you’re wearing shoes that you really don’t want to wear that you don’t feel comfortable in and can only just about manage.

Wear something flat and fabulous and feel fantastic!

Maireas · 16/04/2022 16:18

Hi Nnique! I'm currently coveting the flat shoes Meghan wore at Invictus today with jeans. They look like Chanel. Lovely.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:19

Yes it was a great outfit!

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:19

I’m not allowed any new shoes though!! 😭😭

Maireas · 16/04/2022 16:23

Nothing. But Nothing would stop me buying new shoes!

EmergencyPoncho · 16/04/2022 16:23

I'd wear a gold espadrille wedge.

JoanThursday · 16/04/2022 16:24

I love those ballet flats! Thank you. And I've just scurried upstairs to check at the back of the wardrobe because I've remembered that I have something very similar with a beige upper and a burnt-orange coloured toe. They were from Pied a Terre. That would work with the leopard print on the dress, I think?

I guess what I needed was the 'yes, go ahead!' to the flat shoe question. (A bit ridiculous really Blush)

My usual stance. But I’m being good as I already have many pairs of fabulous shoes. However I did get one pair of brogues this month so it’s not as bad as it sounds...

I will be slowly switching out all my mid to high heeled footwear though, as I no longer want to wear them, so as I sell each pair I’ll build a nice fund for replacements.

(Sorry for derail @JoanThursday)

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:27

Oh I like that a lot @Maireas!

TottersBlankly · 16/04/2022 16:28

I’d say your relatively casual dress needs dressing up for evening. So gold or metallic looking footwear? (And maybe a gold chain or leather belt.)

These are all Zara.

Definitely, Joan - they sound perfect! (btw, love Joan Thursday!)
Maireas · 16/04/2022 16:31

I hear you, Nnique!
JoanThursday - you'll get a lot of wear out of that style.

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:33

Ahhh I wish I had an occasion to dress up for!!

Nnique · 16/04/2022 16:34

JoanThursday · 16/04/2022 16:35

Thanks @TottersBlankly. I appreciate all the ideas here and I like the sound of something gold/bronze. Btw the dress is quite 'dressed up' for me - I guess that's all relative! (Gazes down at grey boyfriend jeans, green t shirt and trainers ....)

I think the ballet flats I already have are up there on the shortlist. I also have a leather envelope clutch in a similar burnt orange so I could fish that out too.

Two years of lockdown with very little going 'out out' and I can't remember what I've got!
