Can linen trousers ever look good from the rear?

lecreusetpeppermill · 23/03/2022 09:34

Im very slim and they make my arse look like a concrete block.
They are often way too long (average height).
And add years to my over all look.

It's a shame because i love them, and always wished i could wear them. They kook so easy and cool for the summer, and so laid back!

What's the alternative, a skirt?
Any big, baggy style trews have this effect on me, so when people say slim people suit anything i have to disagree!

Example, I never ever look like these photos, so annoying!

I've got some great ones from M&S that come in different lengths. So that would solve your problem of too long. I think you need to try a few different pairs on until you find some that fit well on the bum.

I'll see if I can link to my ones...

I know what you mean but it never works for me!

Last week I wore leggings, docs and a floppy long silk vest and a nice linen cardi.
Went in a store, tried on wide leg linen trews and looked instantly square, 20 yrs older and depressed. It just doesnt seem to work for me sadly.

Now 20 years older is great, but not in the way this looked, i promise!

They're the least flattering garment known to humanity. Instantly add 20 years and 2 dress sizes to everyone, and that's before we even consider the fact that they look like a boiled rag after wearing them for 7 minutes.

AnyFucker · 23/03/2022 09:59

Yeah, they do nobody any favours, IMO

Westfacing · 23/03/2022 10:04

They look OK if you keep walking all day and never sit down!

DSGR · 23/03/2022 10:11

I have never thought they’re unflattering or make people look overweight. I always just think “ah summer” when I see them

Zazdar · 23/03/2022 10:34

Try low rise. If anything, they emphasise how slim you are.

I wouldn’t want to look like the second photo.

banivani · 23/03/2022 11:57

A lot of linen clothes/trousers are poorly cut. The material is relatively expensive so they save money on the style, but it's not properly high quality so loses shape quickly which accentuates the poor cuts. IMO. Also - wide legged trousers are always going to be wide legged trousers - if they're not your thing in other fabrics they won't make you happy in linen.

I love linen though, one of my favourite fabrics. I try to think "linen wrinkles expensively" Grin

hellcatspangle · 23/03/2022 11:58

Tbf I don't have to look at my arse, so I'm not bothered and wear them every day in the summer 😂

Ozanj · 23/03/2022 12:00

I prefer good quality viscose trousers over linen.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/03/2022 12:08

I don't even think those photos look good, especially the one where she is standing like a 5 year old who needs the toilet.

However trying them on with an outfit chosen for leggings is unfair to the linen trousers. Sandals and a lighter/fitted/cropped top would be more likely to work.

Mumsnut · 23/03/2022 12:58

My arse, in linen trousers, looks as if it is waiting for a bike to be parked between the cheeks.

peachgreen · 23/03/2022 13:06

Honestly, I think you just have to accept that they're not going to be the most figure-enhancing and enjoy wearing them for other reasons. Imo there's nothing better for a hot summer's day and while you might not look as slim as you would in, say, skinny jeans, you'll look breezy and comfortable and relaxed, and that's a good thing too!

I would always wear them with a fitted or cropped top though, to balance it out.

lecreusetpeppermill · 23/03/2022 13:12

I do like them with a floaty top and a nice, summer weight cardigan.

I think they look good on other people though and can't understand why they look so terrible on me. I have what people call the 'right' figure, but it is as if the personality of my body says nooooo!

I do wonder if that's true, that our body has a sort of personality, so no matter how much it conforms to society's standard, it has a mind of it's own.

I was wearing a silky top when i tried the linen trousers on, they very much went well together, so god knows why they looked so awful. They really did make me look a lot older - and whilst that is not a negative thing, it just seemed they took all of my shape, vitality and personality away.

I like how small Japanese women sometimes wear linen trousers, with a longer top, cure scarf, etc. but even though it ought to work on me, it really doesn't.
Alternatively, I always look good in along skirt, so go figure Grin

The only way Linen trousers look smart is if they have a proper waist rather than an elasticated one. I had brilliant ones from John Lewis, but sadly they fell apart after a few years.

peachgreen · 23/03/2022 13:18

That's an interesting idea OP! I see other women with my exact body shape in long skirts and think they look amazing, but when I put one on I look like the least stylish person alive. No idea why but they just don't work on me at all.

lecreusetpeppermill · 23/03/2022 14:50

true about elasticated waists, i cant stand it on anything. I can never understand product reviews that champion them, they're uncomfortable and put a big ridge around my waist.

I love flat waists with no ruching, medium to lower rise. Every trouser in the shops right now is either masses of elastic or up to my boobs :(

OP posts:
rookiemere · 23/03/2022 15:00

Looks like John Lewis has some own brand non elasticated ones

AnyFucker · 23/03/2022 18:45

I love side fastening waists

ExConstance · 24/03/2022 11:06

these are lovelybut expensive. I'm hoping they will still be around at Sale time.

DedalusBloom · 24/03/2022 17:03

To be fair you can't see the arses on those models either so it's entirely possible they look shit from behind.

I always buy a size down in linen to try and counteract the bag when the fibres relax

Billandben444 · 24/03/2022 17:16

Oh ye with skinny waists and hips! I was like you until menopause hit and now I look better in a looser fit trouser. I've just bought 2 pairs of Next linen mix, elasticated back (to cuddle bum) and zip fly to flatten front. They're long and flappy (touch the ground at the back) and I'm going to live in them this summer.

AnnieSnap · 24/03/2022 19:24

Perhaps a linen/cotton mix would work better for you, as it doesn’t go as baggy as pure linen.

Mindtheears · 24/03/2022 19:31

I agree about lower rise ones. I had two pairs, same leg width but one pair was really flattering whereas I felt like shit in the other pair. Main difference seemed to be low vs higher waisted.

intwrferingma · 24/03/2022 19:37

Drawstrings instantly scream
Middle age to me. Maybe get some with some tailoring and sip and button fastening
