Are Ray Bans worth the money?

Crazydogmumma · 17/03/2022 23:19

I wear sunglasses throughout the year as my eyes are quite sensitive to light. I have several pairs of cheap sunglasses (next, boots, new look etc etc) that are dotted in handbags and the car.
I am coveting some Ray Bans (Jackie Ohh style). It would
Be quite a big purchase for me but I think i need/deserve a treat- so do you think they are worth the money or should
I stick with my cheapies?

I've had prescription Wayfarers for about 8 years and they've paid for themselves, I wear them all summer, and every sunny day ( in Australia). Always had cheap ones before but I've looked after these and always put them in their case. Wouldn't buy any other brand.

Thelikelylass · 18/03/2022 10:30

I have the Jackie Ohh and just ordered the Jackie Ohh ll.
My first pair are great, had them a few years and robust if you keep them in their box.
I've wore Ray-Ban for over 25 years and love them.

CPL593H · 18/03/2022 10:30

Wayfarers 30+ years, love them. Got to have the pantoscopic tilt, tried the ones without when they came out and they just felt odd Grin

Seriously, I had early cataracts and was told (by an eye surgeon) they would have been even worse even sooner had I not had protection of something like Raybans.

lostandfoundit · 18/03/2022 10:33

Definitely worth it. I've had mine 11 years now and still going strong so they have worked out cheaper than buying other less expensive pairs along the way. A friend (!) trod on mine by accident, thought they were broken but luckily can still wear them, just a slight bend in one arm.

hamsterchump · 18/03/2022 10:39

If these are the right ones then they're 50% off so £64 on the Ray-Ban official site at the moment.

hamsterchump · 18/03/2022 10:44

If those aren't the right ones there are loads on there for 50% off, do you have to pay extra for polarised lenses though? I agree once you've had polarised ones you never want to go back.

brokengoalposts · 18/03/2022 11:36

Yes. I used to live somewhere sunny year round so I've had lots of pairs of sunglasses. Ray Bans have always been good steady workhorses.

BrizzleMaverick · 18/03/2022 18:54

Yes!

I found the receipt for mine at the back of a drawer during a lockdown clear out, I got them in 2008 for £150.

I've just started thinking about replacing them this year as the plastic on one of the arms has started to come away and is catching in my hair.

Get a classic style and definitely polarised as others have mentioned.

Crazydogmumma · 18/03/2022 19:11

Thank you so much everyone. Such positive comments- I am going to order some. Now to decide on the colour— although if they are 50% off I may have to get 2 pairs 😉😎😎

I just got some in that exact style. Jackie Ohh grey gradient and polarised. I followed my husbands advice and moved to Ray Bans polarised. Wore them all day today, perfect

OhCobblers · 18/03/2022 20:43

I've had numerous pairs over the years and still regret giving away a pair of Wayfarers!! What was I thinking?!!!

@DillDanding interested in your airport purchase as we're flying soon and quite fancy the Justin style?!! A god reduction in price??

PartyPlan · 18/03/2022 21:05

Just bought some new ones that were in their sale thanks to PP mentioning it!

sageandbasil · 18/03/2022 21:08

I used to have some. I prefer my ones from Oliver Bonas

KittenKong · 18/03/2022 21:09

Yes the lenses are very good and the frames last.

They are the ones I'm thinking of getting; can I asked what you paid for them and where from.
CecilyTheWake · 18/03/2022 22:47

I’ve only had Ray Bans for about 25 years. I’ve bought about five or six pairs and I still have all but one of them. They’ve been the best consistently in terms of protection, comfort, style, durability and value for money.

Journeynotdestination · 22/03/2022 07:32

TK Max have some Raybans in today online @Crazydogmumma I think they have the Jackie O style, look at the new in section for women.

LonelyBones · 22/03/2022 17:40

My Jackie O Ray Bans came from TKMaxx last year/year before and they were only £49 odd. They are the black ones, super dark. I do prefer my brown polarised Pradas for everyday, but the jackie Os are amazing on hols, v bright sunlight.

Crazydogmumma · 22/03/2022 23:37

Thank you @LonelyBones and @Journeynotdestination ~ I will check out TK Max now .

I'm going to be the lone voice here. Ray-Bans are the only sunglasses I've ever had trouble with, I loved the look of them but there was a problem with rubberised coating on them (I had matt tortoishell Justins), the surface became horribly sticky. They were genuine and a quick Google brings up lots of people with the same issue.

Teadrinker11 · 23/03/2022 00:06

Absolutely yes. They're worth every cent. Don't skimp on sunglasses, eyes should be looked after. Ray Bans are the best money can buy.

Justkoko · 28/03/2022 11:17

Are they good enough quality and protection to justify the price? I was reading about them and some argue the quality has gone down in recent years. I've always fancied some but I'd like to know if they are genuinely better quality than cheaper polarised sunglasses.

I don't know about all the science of how protective lenses are, but I have Ray Bans and I've had many pairs of sunglasses in the past from places like Accessorize. There's no comparison - the Ray Bans are just far better quality. Mine are all fairly recent, the oldest is maybe three or four years old and I've no idea what the quality was like before then but I can't complain at all.
Purpleavocado · 28/03/2022 18:36

I have 2 pairs of Raybans. I prefer my Shadyrays glasses.
