Help me find stylish and comfy sandals I can walk for miles in (and won’t smell)

Im after a nice pair of summer sandals that are good for walking miles in (think sunny city break) but are a bit smarter than this Velcro canvas walking types and would go with a summer dress or tailored shorts. As a starter for 10, I ordered these online as I thought they would fit the bill but my feel are super skinny and while the base is super comfortable, the straps are wide on me and my feet slip out of them :(

So I think I’ll need some kind of adjustable strap to tighten them? I can’t cope with the stink of Birkenstocks….but comfort is high in the agenda. Also, not fixed in the fisherman style…buckles, bands, cross cross all considered!

Any suggestions or similar brands to Geox? The soles were sooo comfy.

I have the same problem as you have and I have you some sandals from Clarks that are amazing ( so much I have two pairs, one black and one red!). It seems they still sell them, they are very well made, extremely comfortable and not so bulky

I am not so good at posting links, I hope this one works

Mistressiggi · 14/03/2022 06:42

Why do your Birkenstock sandals stink?
I have about 5 pairs and no stinking here. Some of my more plasticky soled sandals are more inclined to, IMO.

Mouthfulofquiz · 14/03/2022 06:47

Have a look at Ecco. Lovely comfortable sandals.
I can never understand how people’s Birkenstocks stink though! What are you doing to them? Grin

Inthestillofthenight · 14/03/2022 07:00

I was going to say Ecco as well also you can get Geox sandals in TKmaxx at times.

Mephisto also have some decent walking types as well but are more expensive.

I can walk for miles and miles in Birkenstocks, and no they dont smell (and I live in a tropical country)

Inthestillofthenight · 14/03/2022 07:02

Got my eye on these

Rieker also make comfortable sandals that look a bit more dressy than serious walking sandals.

JohannSebastianBach · 14/03/2022 07:03

Birkenstock for me.

I had those in tan nubuck, reluctantly chucked them away after ten years, wish they still did them.
chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/03/2022 07:24

Fitflop make some good comfy sandals. I bought some thong type ones last year which I've walked everywhere in.

I have the sam dilemma , these were really comfortable

CraftyCleopatra · 14/03/2022 08:31

Now that is interesting about the Birkies! I’ve never owned a pair but my old flatmate did and she kept them in a cupboard in the hall…it’s stank and it was deffo the birkies! I’ve heard they are notoriously stinky. She was lovely too…very tidy and clean so I assumed (given I am more slatternly than her Grin) that mine would be worse!

Thanks for the suggestions…I’d forgotten about good old Clark’s…will have a browse. Also Reiker (have not come across before) and ECCO (which I have but associate with my dear old mum!)

Teva! So comfy and waterproof. Also rate Birkenstock but wear them in first.

museumum · 14/03/2022 09:25

Teva make the comfiest sandals and they’re not all Velcro and canvas. They do brown leather too which I love.

SkankingMopoke · 14/03/2022 09:39

The comfiest sandals I've owned have been Ecco and Merrell (although the latter are more rugged and practical than pretty like your link). The Merrells in particular have done many very long country walks and came backpacking with me in Malaysia. They are still going strong ten years on.

Whitney168 · 14/03/2022 09:47

Another Birkenstock fan here, many pairs over the years. The only time I’ve ever had a pair get smelly is when they got very wet, so perhaps that’s why you associate them with it?

YoudaftChump · 14/03/2022 10:11

Rubber Birkenstocks, I think they're called Arizona in a narrow fit.
I can walk miles in them with my long, skinny feet.

Inthestillofthenight · 14/03/2022 11:42

Sadly lost 2 pairs of Birkies when the humidity got so bad one week left them in a closed cupboard ......came back to mushrooms growing in the footbed.......never leave them in a closed humid place.....sorry for that info..

Currently have 8 pairs could not do without them but cannot get away with Fit flops

BoodleBug51 · 14/03/2022 11:54

It's anything with a cork footbed that gets smelly.

I got round this by wearing Trust foot deodorant, it's a game changer. You only need to apply it once a week and it's natural.

Rayna37 · 14/03/2022 12:02

Ecco have been the holy grail of comfy sandals. Even better if you can find some like in an outlet store!

bigbluebus · 14/03/2022 12:06

Moshulu do lots of sandals in different colours which I've always found comfortable. They have both slip of and sandals with straps. Have a look at their website. www.moshulu.co.uk/womens-sandals

I buy winter boots from them too - all very comfortable.

So comfortable- I could walk all day in them. I have flat narrow stupid feet and these are great-I have 2 pairs.
For evenings I wear saltwaters in rose gold.

L0stinCyberspace · 14/03/2022 13:33

Strive sandals....heaven

CraftyCleopatra · 14/03/2022 14:03

@L0stinCyberspace good call! Never heard of Strive before…I’ve ordered these! Can’t wait for them to come!

strivefootwear.com/aruba-snake-glamour.html

I hope they fit. Thanks to all for suggestions…I might have to invest in a back up pair :)

Birkenstocks, I live in them and have several pairs that are old maybe 9 or 10 years old, no stink here, if they get too grotty then I scrub the footbed with a stiff toothbrush and a touch of soap, rinse and leave to dry and they are like new again, my favourites are the oiled leather Mayari or Gizeh but have just treated myself to a new pair of Kyoto's for this year.
