Modern Holy Communion

So DD is about to do her First Holy Communion.
The idea of a fancy white dress is making her want to pull out of the whole process... But at the same time I know that she will want to look nice and feel special.
Any ideas on a cool outfit? (She has definitely said an absolute no to the idea of a white trouser suit as I already ran that by her!)
Is the white colour essential or just recommended?
She does have a 'thing' about comfort - so is generally found in supersoft leggings and t-shirts. She will wear dresses but they tend to be dark simple styles - as soon as they vere into pastels, flouncy overly girly styles then she's not keen.
I'm not much of a style guru - so if I could show her a few ideas we can work out what she might be comfortable with...

I'm not in the UK but my dd had her first communion last year and didn't want to wear white - so she didn't. I would check with your church but I doubt they would refuse her if she didn't wear white. I told dd that she would probably be the only girl not in white and was she ok with that? She was. She wore a navy dress that she liked and has worn again.

Dd wore a white cotton dress and white cardigan for her confirmation, from monsoon. It was summer though.

I don't understand why kids don't make their FHC in their school uniforms.
In our church, quite a few children used to wear their scout uniforms but the new priest doesn't like this.

seekinglondonlife · 28/02/2022 15:48

When DN made his a new rule came in that all children had to wear school uniform. The priest emphasised the day is about the sacrament, not fake tan and getting dolled up. Some of the mums could have benefitted from a uniform too.

@ParkheadParadise

I don't understand why kids don't make their FHC in their school uniforms. It would save the parents a fortune and all the kids would be the same.

@LaBrujaPiruja

I think you cannot order from Spain (Brexit) without paying taxes but it is worth looking… this is a department store. www.elcorteingles.es/moda-infantil/comuniones/?s=Comuni&stype=typeahead_category I’ve been to several FHCs over the last few years and most girls’ dresses have a touch of color (embroidery, bows, etc.) in pale blue, sage, dusty pink…
Holy crap they are expensive! And I'm the Eurozone so the price is the price I see! You can get better value elsewhere @goldfluffyclouds. I'll see if I can find something that might suit and post details here.

Here are some from Shein (so they won't break the bank if she decided not to wear them when they arrive - also pay for the option to return the clothes if you're ordering from here)

Even with the suggestions made so far, when they get their class photo taken, it'll be so obvious that she isn't wearing a dress so what I would do is get her a very plain dress, and some accessories (a cardigan or a little jacket to go over it and the shoes) and don't spend a fortune on it, but then get her a different outfit that she can change into when the communion ceremony is over and you've come home.

I've got 20 nieces and nephews and 2 dd's I've been to lots of FHC's.
All the boys had kilts and all the girls had white dresses no one had anything different on. Several beauty salons near me are advertising packages for FHC
Dd2 will make her's next year

Just coming back to this as we had the first holy communion last week.
It went really well - daughter was completely happy with an outfit from Zara...
She looked very happy and in fact her friend said she wished she'd been allowed to do something similar as she felt really uncomfortable in her mini bride outfit that her mum had pressured her into...
We got her this top, trousers and trainers...

I love your choices, bet your little girl felt at ease and comfortable on a big occasion - that’s a big win!

SpeedofaSloth · 19/05/2022 21:18

My DD wore a Next white party dress for hers.
Her friend didn't want wear a dress so wore a white t shirt and long shorts instead, with white skater style shoes.
