A coat for a 12 year old girl, who believes she is too grown up to wear a coat.

Help!

Dd is 12 and has reached the stage where she's too cool to wear a coat. Despite the fact it's winter. Despite the fact it takes her 40 minutes to walk to school. Despite the fact the weather will get even colder.

Over the last year or so she's had a massive growth spurt, and is now roughly an adult sized 8-10 (depends if she'll be wearing a jumper under the coat).

We took her shopping for a new coat at the weekend but none of the coats in any of the shops were acceptable to her. No coats at all. We tried them all. All rejected on spurious grounds of 12 year old girl logic.

So, wise style and beauty people, can you reccomened a coat that will put a sparkle in her eye and prevent her from catching pneumonia

Many thanks.

I ended up getting DD something from la redoute which she approved of (but took ages to arrive)

Round here many girls wear black and white checked blanket scarves instead of coats, worth considering if you cannot find her a coat.

I just bought myself a black bum length puffer from Primark that DD now wants in beige, and it's proper warm, much more than I was expecting. Did you look in there?

GoGoGretaDoll · 06/12/2021 21:25

I honestly wouldn't bother. Teens are weird about coats. It won't get worn.

Stopsnowing · 06/12/2021 21:27

Following!

littlefireseverywhere · 06/12/2021 21:27

I got DD a fleece jacket, not ideal but better than nothing. Will she wear a hat, or gloves?

thisplaceisweird · 06/12/2021 21:28

What about a teddy shacket? It's 'cool' right
ow and at least warmer than just a hoodie.

Underthestairsbears · 06/12/2021 21:29

In EXACTLY the same position here... only she's a bit Goth too so is very interesting to buy clothes for 🙄

This. Coats have been uncool for teens for years now, both of mine went through a stage of not wearing a coat despite my best efforts.
heymammy · 06/12/2021 21:29

Teens are definitely weird about coats. One of my teen dds will only wear a small mens jacket so it looks oversized - could that be a thing right now?

Serenschintte · 06/12/2021 21:30

I would buy an acceptable coat - to you. Look at what other teens are wearing. If she doesn’t wear is that’s her choice. Your teen years are only just starting - they usually want to dictate most things. But you are the one paying for it so usually they get to choose. Unless they are being unreasonable (as in this case) and then they don’t.

Brolly for the rain and h&m for some long line white vest tops for an additional warm layer.

Dont even try to get the Perfect Coat for school.

Possibly one for weekends but never for school.

Notmeoryou · 06/12/2021 21:33

Puffa Jacket - Shorter Length Neutral Colour. May wear it a bit if you're lucky 😆

kowari · 06/12/2021 21:34

DS is 15 and wears his coat to school now. I think because it fits over his blazer better than the puffer jacket he had before. It's thigh length with four outer pockets, buttons and zip.

honeylemonteaforme · 06/12/2021 21:36

Maybe lightweight puffa Uniqlo type as that can be rolled up into the hood and stuffed in her bag 5 min away from school

ILoveHuskies · 06/12/2021 21:38

What is this teen girl thing of not wearing a coat 😩😩😩😩

She has north face puffa jacket which apparently is fine to wears on the weekends (out and about with us) but not to school . NEVER to school. I do Not get it at
All 🤷‍♀️

liveforsummer · 06/12/2021 21:40

We're in eastern costal Scotland so teens do wear coats - everyone does. Dd has a cropped bomber with fur trim hood. Think it came from New Look and a shacket/coatigan (not sure which one it falls in to) which is soft and on trend checks. She also has a leather biker and a denim jacket which aren't as warm but still better than no jacket at all

MrsPleasant · 06/12/2021 21:40

I also have no joy on the coat front. I buy vests to wear under her school shirt and beg encourage her to wear a hat - she will occasionally wear a beanie. She's got hand warmers in her stocking this year, assuming her hands don't drop off before then. I try not to nag, I remember being the same when I was her age.

PhantomErik · 06/12/2021 21:41

My DD is almost 13 & exactly the same! I've sort of given up & as she is dropped off at school & picked up 5 minutes walk away so I can accept she doesn't really need one. She will wear one at the weekend when out & about with us & that is a bomber jacket from Lands End.

For school she wears a thermal t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, jumper & blazer. She also wears thermal tights & has fingerless gloves.

I'll be following this just in case anyone can suggest anything!

MushMonster · 06/12/2021 21:42

Mine got two puffer coats, a long warm one and a shorter very loght one. None get worn! It drives me crazy!
The long warm one is very much in fashion now.
I got her a fleece from TKMax, it is beautiful! Light grey. At least she wore that today at home.
She says she does not feel cold...
Same as you, I show her things, search, go to shops, online, nothing.....
The only thing she likes is hoodies, but those and blazers do not agree!
Watching this for ideas!

han01uk · 06/12/2021 21:48

I got mine a superdry bargain from eBay. She seems to approve so far. They are tricky at this age though!

whatagloriousthingtobe · 06/12/2021 21:55

No teens myself but laughing as this brought back memories - I'm 32 and remember the days of not being seen dead in a coat !

MrsFoxyplease · 06/12/2021 22:00

A one from a sports shop?
( My dc will wear it if it has a Nike or Adidas logo).

Holothane · 06/12/2021 22:04

We had no choice the school dictated what we wore it was a boarding school with day kids I was lucky one of the day kids, school coat was worn, my aunt tried to persuade me to wear after I left school no chance I’d wear anything else but not that coat.

HaaaaaveyoumetTed · 06/12/2021 22:22

I don't think I wore a coat from 12-16. I remember myself and a friend shopping around Manchester city centre in November wearing just vest tops when we were about 15.

I'd buy a blanket scarf or a cheap shacket as she'll probably not wear it!

Staywithmemyblood · 06/12/2021 22:36

This is a losing battle @CliveThighs 🙈 so probably best to just buy her a cheap, warm coat that’ll hang in the wardrobe for the next few years but will make you feel better knowing it’s your DD’s choice not to wear it. You’ll have done your bit 😇 Trying to find the perfect coat for a reluctant teen is like the quest for the holy grail- life’s too short for that shit 🍷

gonnabeok · 06/12/2021 22:38

Got my dd 12 a black lightweight jacket from surfdome, bit like a thin puffer jacket but super warm. It passed the cool test! Am I hip or what?Wink
