A coat for a 12 year old girl, who believes she is too grown up to wear a coat.

Help!

Dd is 12 and has reached the stage where she's too cool to wear a coat. Despite the fact it's winter. Despite the fact it takes her 40 minutes to walk to school. Despite the fact the weather will get even colder.

Over the last year or so she's had a massive growth spurt, and is now roughly an adult sized 8-10 (depends if she'll be wearing a jumper under the coat).

We took her shopping for a new coat at the weekend but none of the coats in any of the shops were acceptable to her. No coats at all. We tried them all. All rejected on spurious grounds of 12 year old girl logic.

So, wise style and beauty people, can you reccomened a coat that will put a sparkle in her eye and prevent her from catching pneumonia

Many thanks.

Primark sell puffa type jackets that are really warm and squash up into a bag so she could as a pp said take it off near school and stuff into its bag into her school bag. I do like the blanket scarf idea but i am old and like to be warm 😁

God I remember being this age and being way too cool to wear a coat. I finally relented with a turquoise shiny PVC jacket (it was the 90s) but that’s as far as I’d go.

I remember walking home in the absolute pissing rain and still not thinking that I should take an umbrella or a waterproof coat

Mine wouldn’t do coats as teen either , they are 21-26-29 and alive so I really would let them get on with it.

I have a 14 and 12 year old in high school.
Neither have a problem wearing coats in cold weather but don't want to wear them to school because there are no lockers or cloakrooms or hooks in classrooms to store them all day so have to trawl them around school all day including break times and are not allowed to wear them inside the school building at all so have to be carried along with very heavy backpacks.

Both have thin cagoule type coats which will pack very small to fit in a pocket of their backpacks which they will use in very wet weather but when they arrive at school with wet cagoules they have to carry those around as they're too wet to put in their bags with books.

There is a small element of social suicide to coat wearing at school but practical issues are definitely bigger for my DC.

agree that school arrangements are part of the problem.
my DD has two beautiful winter coats - one grey wool cocoon coat, and a black teddy bear fur one - which she alternates at weekends.

However she doesn't want to take them to school, as they have to wear a blazer which makes everything feel really bulky, and they have nowhere to leave them during the day. So for rainy school days she's still wearing a thin, summer-weight North Face anorak which can be squished into her bag, and just a blazer when it's dry.

I bought mine a pac a mac for when it rains and she actually does wear it - not very warm though.

She has a Superdry everest parka for cold weather which she does wear but hates carrying around school as its heavy.
Look at surfdome they have lots of teen friendly brands and often at reduced prices, delivery is quick too.

Coat uncool!
Snotty, shivering, wet and resting bitch face cool.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The strange child! Send her round to check out my specific coat wardrobe (yes, you can never have too many coats IMO). I suspect getting cold and wet a few times may adjust her focus somewhat? Though, in my day there were truly 🦇💩 notions about coats; it was social death to button them up and, whilst hoods were permissible, wearing them on one’s head was not.

Ddot · 15/12/2021 23:25

I think it's more to do with carrying them about in school, something foldable that will squash into nothing. Not particularly warm but at least dry.

The only coat my daughter finds acceptable is her black raincoat. It’s a sort of rubbery fisherman style coat. Waterproof but not at all warm. I think it was from new look. She’s also asked for one in yellow as a Christmas present. 🤷‍♀️🎈

Reasons why all other coats are unacceptable:
Puffers are too puffy / shiny / silky.
Parkas have the wrong shape of pockets and fur trim is a no.
Wool coats are for old ladies.
Denim coats not allowed at school.
Most coats for teens are cropped and that’s a no because even 1mm of shirt showing below the jacket is the worst fashion crime imaginable.
