Evening out - plus size. Help!

43leftfeet · 28/11/2021 08:40

I'm going on an evening out. It's not a dress-up-to the nines type affair, nor a casual drink with mates but somewhere in between.

Kinda the smart-casual of evenings out I guess.

And I don't know where to start! My social life has been pretty much zero since lockdown except some lovely pub meetups with friends where I just wore my usual jeans and long tops.

I'm size 24, with most of my weight on my stomach so on a normal day I tend to wear oversized t-shirts / shirt dresses / jumper dresses / tunics with jeans / jeggings / tights.

I want to wear something nice, but no idea - what do people wear on a night out these days!

Definitely need some new footwear for a start, but haven't worn heals since before lockdown and no wish to get back in them! A nice pair of boots maybe?

Any help gratefully received! Thanks :)

I've looked :(

If it's a top, it needs to be longline, like a tunic. I can't wear anything that has a waist - or even a hint of a waist! - or needs tucking in, or ends above my crotch.

Imaging I was 7 months pregnant and trying to hide it!

What about Curvissa?

RubyTuesday70 · 01/12/2021 20:36

I'm a 20/22 and have just got some really nice longline floaty blouses from Mint Velvet. I've got a cami to wear under, and some new black jeggings and am wearing this one for our work do which is very casual....

www.mintvelvet.co.uk/product/megan-pleated-long-shirt/39427

It's very generously sized and is quite flattering.

RedCarsGoFaster · 01/12/2021 20:38

Hello fellow size 24!

My best purchases in the last few months have been short kimonos from One Hundred Stars worn over vest tops (they don't fully close, but they look pretty and I don't boil to death) and a pair of jeans; a couple of Donald Stanley dresses (but these are for vair posh balls); some plain tshirts from Next and LOTS of tops from George at Asda! Seriously, go have a look there and at TU in Sainsbury's. George is brilliant for plus size I find.

I've also had some lovely jeans, heels and jumpers via Thread - they collate lots of things and show you outfits to consider. You can then select items if you want to buy them. Watch out for jumpers though - I find a LOT of them are short / cropped abs it's not always obvious.

If you wanted to buy anything from them, a referral link gets you 20% off your first order and I get £20 towards my next purchase..... www.thread.com/SaUudtiMkRDH3KqRaOe9dzg7E0qdoZ8gH

@43leftfeet

I love this blue top, it's the right length for me and I'd dress in much the same way as the model - maybe slightly smarter.

But I'm worried it's too understated?! What if everyone else looks very glam?! (I'm not very good at glam!)

Thats lovely. Whack some gold necklaces on with it op!

My friend, who’s a size 28 and about 5’2” wore this to our Christmas bash tonight and it looked really nice.

My advice would be go for plain black top and trousers…flattering cuts and fabrics and then accessorise to the max - gold is very festive. Perhaps treat yourself to a blow dry and do your make up nice. Keep it simple on the clothing - smart but flattering.

Youngatheart00 · 01/12/2021 23:19

That’s a lovely top @CoachBeard

blisstwins · 01/12/2021 23:43

What about looking at maternity lines for tunics? I am not in the UK, but many maternity outfits don’t scream maternity anymore. Maybe you can find tops with the cut you need. So frustrating, I know.

Tangelo · 02/12/2021 00:05

What about a floral midi dress in floaty fabric with a chunky Chelsea boot? Lots of choice (I have a couple of dresses from Mango which are really well cut - I rate their plus range), and you can wear it for lots of different events. I wear a biker jacket with mine (asos about 10 years ago) for evening and good hair and make up, and sometimes a chunky cardigan or sweatshirt during the day.

I’m a 20 and carry lots of weight round my middle and have been surprised how well this works for me. Better than a floaty long top - I tend to think it looks like you’re trying to hide your tummy if tops are longer than hip length

Alvinne · 02/12/2021 04:15

As a fellow size 24 I've been surprised by Shein and bought a fair few things recently. I tend to buy their 3x(22) or 4x(24) the sizing is pretty accurate and they always have measurements if you can be bothered to check those. Fabrics and stitching are at least as good quallity as high Street and supermarket and there are generally reviews where people upload pictures so you can see the fabric and fit in reality compared to the company photos. The only down side is delivery can take a week or two, when I've returned things this also takes about a week to credit, but really feel they are a game changer for plus size clothes.

Totally agree! Go with the dresses Smile

Nooooo! I could cry!

I'm waiting on a parcel from Next. I ordered it Wednesday and paid for next day delivery. I ordered a load of stuff including a couple of safe-but-boring options.

It's not turned up, and the tracking shows it left the warehouse Tues evening but isn't with my local courier.

The customer service number has a recorded message saying they know that lots of deliveries are late, and not to worry they'll be with us in the next few days, but they can't specify when.

I'm traveling, leaving 10am tomorrow morning. Unless they miraculously appear today, no outfit 😭 😭 😭

I've put on weight and don't fit into my nice clothes here anymore. Fuck!!

If I go into town, the only chance I have of buying something in my size is Sainsburys or Asda and even that's slim.

Plus I don't have time to do this today.

Am probably going to have to try to cobble together an outfit from what little still fits me. Please send miracles my way!

Sorry can't download picture. Nice flattering dress £45 from Very.

OctFeb · 03/12/2021 22:19

Definitely look at Asda online, far bigger selection and I think next day delivery if needed! Good luck x

tinkywinkyshandbag · 04/12/2021 21:23

@43leftfeet honestly if that happens it truly won't be the end of the world, no one will notice, do your hair and make up,stand up tall and slap on a smile, that's all people will see.

shinynewapple21 · 04/12/2021 21:25

@43leftfeet

So, here are some things I've looked at, and my reasons for talking myself out of them! Am I overthinking?

It's a pain I can't go try them on but I won't get to the shops in time...

OK, first up, I like this but I think it's probably overdressed for the event.

£39 in the Wallis Sale

Love this dress!
