HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my lovely Royal Fashionistas/Tiara Lovers

Here's to a great 2022 🥂🍾

MotherofPearl · 02/01/2022 17:59

HNY everyone! Really hoping for a year of full-on royal glamour.

Jjacobb · 03/01/2022 04:26

I came across this picture of her majesty and thought I would share it on here.
Taken in 1962, it's quite an interesting look she has going on there.

Oh my goodness! Looks like she’s been taking fashion advice from Margaret!

Eaumyword · 03/01/2022 07:46

Wow-that's a different look for her!
Agree with the Margaret vibe, but she somehow looks a tiny bit frumpy. Without the hat and high neckline, that would have looked fab.

justasking111 · 03/01/2022 08:13

Looking at Fergie and family in Verbier skiing thought that they all looked a mess. Ski outfits used to be coordinated and colourful, now it's a race to the bottom. So drab with all the dark mismatch garments.

Maireas · 03/01/2022 08:53

HM looks like an extra in Carry On Cabby! I know that leopard print did have a strong fashion moment at that time.

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 03/01/2022 09:22

@Maireas I don't think that's leopard print, I think it's actual leopard skin!!

KillingMeDeftly · 03/01/2022 09:27

HMQ is only 36 in that photo yet looks older than say, Kate or Meghan do today at 39/40.

Maireas · 03/01/2022 09:30

@KillingMeDeftly
I know. I meant in terms of design

KillingMeDeftly · 03/01/2022 10:29

I don't think HMQ wears fur coats anymore does she? I seem to recall something about her saying she wouldn't a few years ago. Or was that Queen Margrethe and new furs? She still regularly bedecks herself in them but I guess you could say that if it's a fur she's had for decades then why not?

I thought the same.

gluenotsoup · 03/01/2022 11:15

Yes, same here. I’m sure you must be able to dig out something slightly chic, instead they mostly look as though they got dressed out of the jumble sale bag🤦🏻‍♀️

KillingMeDeftly · 03/01/2022 11:29

I guess the Yorks' thoughts are occupied with certain other matters these days!

latedecember1963 · 03/01/2022 12:20

I think people did look older than their years in the 50s, 60s and 70s. When I look at photos of my mum when she was in her 30s and 40s ( she was born in 1938) she looks so much older than people dress today at the same age. It kind of meant that in her 50s and 60s she seemed to look young for her age because her look was only just catching up with her real age. Hope this makes sense!

Maireas · 03/01/2022 12:27

@latedecember1963 - I agree.
HM actually has a young face in that picture, I would argue definitely younger looking than Kate or Meghan for example, but the clothing style is quite unflattering and dowdy.
When I was young, women of my age wore crimplene dresses and wore heavy coats with headscarves. I think I look far younger than my mum and granny did at my age, but a lot is down to styling.

latedecember1963 · 03/01/2022 12:39

Oh, the dreaded headscarf! My mum wouldn't dream of being seen outside the house without hers. The boys say it will have to be part of her burial outfit when the time comes or she'll be back to haunt us for not sending her off looking respectable.

Maireas · 03/01/2022 12:47

Very true! My mum and aunties went for a shampoo and set every Saturday morning, and sat reading Woman's Realm under those big hooded hairdryers. Then out came the headscarf.

Social habits, styling, roles of women, healthcare, wealth - they've all made a difference to our appearance, haven't they?

I was looking at some photos of C&D's wedding and realised HMQ there is the same age as Sophie Wessex now but her styling is similar to what it is now in her 90s!

AdaColeman · 03/01/2022 13:14

The Queen's fur coat is most likely to be ocelot, widely used by furriers at the time. Her Maj had quite a collection of furs, including hats, scarves, and evening stoles as well as coats.and frequent wore them.

gluenotsoup · 03/01/2022 13:50

That’s really interesting. I agree, Maireas, about the external factors that really shape style and presentation for want of a better word. I think in general better lifestyles and life expectations are making people appear younger than they did at a similar age years ago. My mum will often speak of her Grandma, so late 1940’s, early 50’s, at around late sixties appearing like a much older woman, dressed all in calf length black, with grey, scraped back hair and no teeth😂, and generally just older than her years. Whereas now, women just choose (?) not to look like that. Access to affordable clothes, good food, dentistry and cosmetics obviously, but maybe an easier lifestyle too, from the perspective if things like central heating and washing machines rather than setting a coal fire and wrestling with a mangle.
Equally, I look younger than my mum did, and she was my age (46) in the mid eighties. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StartupRepair · 03/01/2022 19:39

Can't get over the Queen's little boots!

MotherofPearl · 03/01/2022 23:26

Interesting seeing that photo of HMQ and reading everyone's reflections on how social changes have influenced how women look.

I couldn't resist this photo of the beautiful Bhutanese RF. I see Queen Jetsun is in a Barbour jacket.

And then CPV in a grey outfit that I really love! It's a skirt and top, rather than a dress, and I think she looks really elegant. I have a similar looking charcoal outfit, but mine's a dress (from Zara), and not nearly as nice.

Is CPV's outfit a rewear? Now that I think about it, I'm sure I've seen it before.

Tinitiny · 04/01/2022 13:28

CPV looks lovely in that grey (wool?) outfit. Hair down would suit her too :)
