Help me, everyone is wearing body con

I really need some help.

I’m going up to Liverpool for the weekend to visit my sister for her birthday. Us and a large group of her friends/work colleagues are going for a meal.

I thought I had my outfit planned, it’s a restaurant, the middle of the day and I’d planned black brogues, black cigarette trousers and a top and blazer (bit like the photo)

Then my sister (who has a completely different style to me) asked what I was wearing and I told her and she basically said I look like I’m about to lecture Geography (thanks) and all the girls are dressing up. As in, body con dresses and stilettos/ boots and now I’m worried and need help because:

  1. I’ve been up there before and felt underdressed on a night out when I thought I was glammed up, so I know how dressy it can get
  2. I thought it was going to be less dressy being a day meal do now I’ve no clue what to wear.
  3. I don’t have anything that dressy

Help! What would you wear? Anyone from Liverpool around to offer advice? Is it really the done thing to dress up in the day up there?

Help me, everyone is wearing body con

So do girls really wander around on a Saturday afternoon with their curlers in? Did that start with Colleen Rooney or has it always been a thing?

Also, the 90s were 7 years ago. Thank you.

No, you don't really see this much anymore, haven't for a good few years now. You see the odd stragglers making their way back from the hairdressers.

Also, the 90s were 7 years ago. Thank you
I feel your pain Grin

Wear what you like; Liverpool is full of students from all over the world as well as Merseysiders. I'm a scouser but I'm a goth so I've never looked like the gaggles of curly blow acrylic nails fake tan girls. I am immaculate though, whoever mentioned that upthread!
Just don't go out in Birkenhead Grin

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 04/11/2021 13:20

Seconding the eclectic mix of people in Liverpool, especially the thousands of students at the three universities. Yes, the full Love Island look is popular but so too are all sorts of other looks - and I love the styling in your initial picture. Wear what you like and do you - would you dream of telling your sister how to dress or any of her friends? The time for wearing the same as every other female should stop on the last day of Yr 11, in my view. Each to their own!

Perimeni · 04/11/2021 18:43

@Hungry675tf

As a scouser this thread is fascinating. There are lots of us who go out out and just drag a brush through our hair, head out and crack on. I've never worn fake tan, or nails or lashes. To me the over dressed ones look like they are from out of town and trying to emulate a look they think is appropriate, but isn't actually worn by many scouse women.

Your original outfit looked perfect.

I agree... Your outfit is lovely and you won't look out of place..be confident in your choice, it's appropriate and stylish for the occasion..Have a great time
TupilaLilium · 04/11/2021 18:51

I was in Liverpool last week with my 5 year old and I was impressed that the Liverpool aesthetic was exactly a 5 year old’s sense of glamour. She was entranced.

Jewel52 · 04/11/2021 18:57

Not just Liverpool, my DS is at Nottingham uni and from Saturday lunch time there are large groups of girls in the city centre dressed to kill a la Love Island 🌴! Love it, find it fascinating to check out their style from the comfort of my jeans and (on trend oversized) quilted jacket 🧥! Fraid comfort takes priority these days 🤦‍♀️

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 04/11/2021 18:59

@brokenbiscuitsx

A bit like this … but with a closer fitting jumper/ top??
Sorry, that is totally a teacher on her way home from work look.

She's even got the 'I've had to talk to 350 idiots today 330 of them being children - do NOT stop me in the street and ask if I will take your survey about leisure facilities for children in the school holidays' expression.

SpecialDeliveryService · 04/11/2021 20:28

Can someone link me to a polo? Because I thought I knew what one was but then pp said they wore a sparkly one and now I'm not so sure I'm visualising the right thing...

Cotswoldmama · 04/11/2021 21:11

I love your outfit. If I found out everyone else was dressing differently it would make me embrace my own look more because I like to stand out from the group.

lazylinguist · 04/11/2021 21:23

The thing about Liverpool is not that everyone will be wearing a certain type of dress, its that everyone just looks good.

Very much depends on your idea of good...
OP your outfit ideas sound much better than the ones you're saying others will be wearing.

Divebar2021 · 04/11/2021 23:14

I was in Liverpool a month ago for a weekend with a friend. I travelled up from London and packed only my usual looks. I saw exactly 2 women in curlers and juicy couture tracksuits ( are they back?) but no one particularly glammed up in the daytime. I noticed a few girls in a bar in an evening with bodycon on but also a table of women with midi dresses. Mostly jeans worn were of the skinny variety. A few hipster students looking like hipster students. I would wear what you feel good in if it’s a looser dress or your blazer / loafers outfit. Hope you have a great time.. I did.

Ps The picture was Karen Britchick.

Divebar2021 · 04/11/2021 23:15

I didn’t think they looked better than anywhere else…just normal.

XiCi · 05/11/2021 00:25

Really, lazylinguist? Would you like to expand?

XiCi · 05/11/2021 07:20

Maybe lazylinguist, since you are bitchily implying that noone in Liverpool looks good you could post a picture of yourself so we can all see what good looks like. I'm thinking you're maybe a fashion icon. Chloe Sevigny perhaps.
No? Didn't think so.

lazylinguist · 05/11/2021 08:22

Confused No I'm not. What post were you reading?! It was you that made the sweeping statement - i.e. that all women/people in Liverpool looked good (seems statistically pretty unlikely!). I was merely pointing out that what looks good depends on your taste. For example I don't like the overly-done-up look, so I wouldn't be a fan of quite a few of the outfits I might see on a night out in Liverpool (or indeed any city). Why on earth would I suggest nobody in Liverpool looks good? That would be as daft as saying everyone does.

And then I said that the OP's outfit sounded nicer (to my taste) than her description of what her friends would be wearing. Which it does.

But hey - don't let the facts of what I actually posted get in the way of a bitchy personal attack eh?

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2021 09:00

XiCi
That seems uncalled for.
All lazylinguist did was question the idea that everyone looks good in Liverpool.

She's right, whether someone thinks something looks good is a matter of personal taste and preference.

I highly doubt Liverpool (or any city for that matter) is some sort of style and beauty haven where everyone is all styled up and dressed to impress.

XiCi · 05/11/2021 09:41

You didn't say that though and the quote was taken from a post saying how varied styles are in the city and not just everyone dressed up in dresses so it just seemed a bit snidey.
Apologies if I read it wrong

TheLadyGrayson · 05/11/2021 09:56

@SpecialDeliveryService it might be a colloquialism - I’m guessing they mean polo neck jumper? Like a turtleneck? Rather than a golf style polo shirt 😁

SovietSpy · 05/11/2021 09:58

The thing about Liverpool is not that everyone will be wearing a certain type of dress, its that everyone just looks good. People there seem to have a real individual sense of style no matter what that style is

I agree with you @XiCi. Don’t know why people are having a pop at what you said. I’m not from Liverpool but go over a fair bit. But I do think you see a lot of smart dressers, as in women of all ages wearing stylish and modern outfits regardless of age. Hair and make up always done neatly and nicely. I wouldn’t say people are glammed up, it’s just people wearing their best outfits whilst out. Everyone looks polished. I think it’s nice as people have a real pride in dressing nice. Obviously it’s not every single person but you do notice a higher than average level of polished.

That said, I think OP should just wear what she wants and be comfortable. There’s nothing worse that dressing just to fit in, as though there’s some universal Liverpool look. Also I think the the stereotype of women walking round in curlers is outdated now, never seen it myself.

JewelleryBox · 05/11/2021 10:06

If you go to their tagged section on Instagram it’s a mixture of glam to jeans.

But almost everyone looks like they’ve made an effort with their tan/hair/makeup/nails.

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2021 11:16

But almost everyone looks like they’ve made an effort with their tan/hair/makeup/nails.
I think that's the part that will be unusual for those of us who don't do all that.
I would consider that to be quite glammed up and would never do all of that for lunch/shopping or a few drinks.

Whereas if you looked at some of my colleagues on Instagram, they're very much glammed up like that most weekends.

lazylinguist · 05/11/2021 11:46

Thanks. I honestly didn't at all mean that nobody in Liverpool looks good. I just meant that whether you think people in Liverpool (or indeed anywhere else) look good depends on what you think looks good!

brokenbiscuitsx · 06/11/2021 17:51

Hi everyone! Just back from meal and extended drinks. Loved it! Liverpool is a bonkers city though so much going on, I thought Bournemouth was crazy sometimes but 😮🤣

Thanks all. In the end I wore a brown midi skirt a black high/polo neck and my block heeled boots. Felt very appropriate 👍🏻

Not sure what my sister was on about, about 2 of the girls were wearing a body con dress (both animal print) everyone else wore a real mix. I actually really loved looking at what people were wearing. Some were wearing belted blazers and leather look leggings, some cropped jeans boots and a top, one a leather mini with a high neck too and blazer. I’m rubbish with ‘going out’ looks so really loved looking at all the outfits. My fave outfit was s girl with a silky midaxi, knee high heeled suede boots and a black long sleeved top - really classy.
