Help me, everyone is wearing body con

I really need some help.

I’m going up to Liverpool for the weekend to visit my sister for her birthday. Us and a large group of her friends/work colleagues are going for a meal.

I thought I had my outfit planned, it’s a restaurant, the middle of the day and I’d planned black brogues, black cigarette trousers and a top and blazer (bit like the photo)

Then my sister (who has a completely different style to me) asked what I was wearing and I told her and she basically said I look like I’m about to lecture Geography (thanks) and all the girls are dressing up. As in, body con dresses and stilettos/ boots and now I’m worried and need help because:

  1. I’ve been up there before and felt underdressed on a night out when I thought I was glammed up, so I know how dressy it can get
  2. I thought it was going to be less dressy being a day meal do now I’ve no clue what to wear.
  3. I don’t have anything that dressy

Help! What would you wear? Anyone from Liverpool around to offer advice? Is it really the done thing to dress up in the day up there?

Help me, everyone is wearing body con

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

I'd stick to your own look rather than trying to adopt some style that you're not even into. If anyone gives you a pitying look just respond with a 'would you like to talk about ox-bow lake formations?'
Oh god I actually know what that is 🤣

I'm scouse and I'm often out in the day - night in Liverpool and anything goes!! You get groups of really glammed girls! But you get a more casual style too!

I like your first outfit and the sound of your silk skirt!

I'm wearing a above the knee shirt dress, boots and biker jacket this weekend for restaurant and some bars :)

brokenbiscuitsx · 03/11/2021 22:05

Spray tan ✔️ Skin straight out of the 1700s
Nails ✔️ I have them
Lashes ✔️ Ditto
Heels ✔️ Good old ‘wont stack it in them’ block heels
Professional make up ✔️ I don’t like to brag but I’m pretty good 🤣
Hair done /up ✔️ If by done you mean washed and brushed and a straightener rammed through any frizz

Having been to the Panoramic a few times it’s not just a place for the young - I would say that you will be more appropriately dressed than anyone turning up in a body con type dress.
I’m often in Liverpool at lunchtime at the weekend and whilst I’ll readily admit I don’t frequent the trendy bars the only people you ever see dressed for a night out are the hen parties!
I’d stick to the trousers - you’ll be taking your jacket off when you get there - so with a nice top or shirt you’ll be fine. If your trousers are the type that look good with heels then as someone above suggested this could be another option.

Beancounter1 · 03/11/2021 22:09

Looking at that picture of you, I would suggest a brightly coloured top - either the jacket or the t-shirt. Too much black/dark colours is a common mistake.
There is no need to go for tight clothes - go for bright clothes.

Add jewellery - cheap costume stuff, but big, bold, and dangly.
Possibly put your hair up? even if just in a scrunchy or big clip.
Bolder lipstick than you would usually go for, or bolder eye shade (but not both or you look like a clown).

So nothing too expensive except buying a bit of bold make-up, some supermarket jewellery, and a bright top.

I feel clueless at the day dressing up thing

Don't think of it as day dressing. Liverpool (or Essex) day dressing at the weekend translates into what the rest of us wear to a fancy nightclub VIP area pretty much. Wink

I see it every Sat lunchtime when I walk past Liverpool St station on my way home from the gym. Train loads of young women are exiting the station from the depths of Essex glammed up to the nines. It confuses the hell out of me and I usually have to check my watch lol.

Just wear what you feel comfortable with OP. You don't have to be a sheep. Be yourself and have fun!!

Somebodylikeyew · 03/11/2021 22:11

@Itsbeen84yearss

Actually this is true ^^ what you get is that if the scouse girls do wear a more casual outfit they still have a curly blow, nails, tan, lashes and usually pro makeup done. I had all but the pro makeup last time I went. I usually do that if I’m going for a say out shopping there Grin
You get a fake tan, lashes, nails and a blow dry for a day shopping???
M0rT · 03/11/2021 22:11

The silk skirt, boots and a biker jacket sound good. Would the top you were going to wear with the cigarette pants go with that outfit?
I would wear it with the polo but I'm in my 40s...
Paint your nails and a smile on and you'll have a great time Smile

… and there’s me going to be turning up the day before in my old Patagonia fleece and comfy trainers 🤣

I have to say I admire the effort but I’m too much of a slattern really to keep all that up 😊

Yes I did consider it but thought it might be too much black. I’ll pack it, will be nice to have options Smile

@BurnedToast

Stick to your style. Body con dresses and heels are a bit naff and Dynasty in my opinion. You'll stand out for the right reasons.
This 100%
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/11/2021 22:34

Is bodycon still in fashion in Liverpool? I thought that had completely gone and that the Mollie Mae from Love Island 'blazer as a dress' thing had replaced it.

Itsbeen84yearss · 03/11/2021 22:40

Shopping in Liverpool yes but then I’d usually have lunch somewhere nice too. I don’t get out much so…

GrrrlPwr · 03/11/2021 22:44

Your outfit sounds super. You will look classy. Maybe get your hair blow-dried? Enjoy spending time with your friends! You will be the only one without sore feet

I somehow don't think the OPs sister and mates represent the whole of Liverpool! I've lived in Liverpool a few years now and it's a very fashion forward but eclectic city and really anything goes. From reading the OP it seems more the issue is wanting to fit in with friends rather than where they are. My friends all dress very differently and noone bats an eyelid but if everyone was dressed the same way then I guess you could look very out of place in the group, odd one out sort of thing. I honestly wouldn't worry OP. If ypu want to glam up go for impeccable hair, skin, nails & make up and wear whatever you feel good in. Panoramic is lovely with a real mix of clientele. You won't be out if place there whatever you choose. I do think you're first outfit is a bit geography teacher though Grin
XiCi · 04/11/2021 08:57

The thing about Liverpool is not that everyone will be wearing a certain type of dress, its that everyone just looks good. People there seem to have a real individual sense of style no matter what that style is. So even people wearing an old pair of jeans will have something else on that really makes the outfit their own, some amazing boots or unusual piece of jewellery or just a great hairstyle. There's a real sense of theatre, even flamboyance in getting ready for a night out. So completely agree with pp that said if you have something in your wardrobe that's a bit daring now is the time to wear it.
Your first outfit looks like something you'd wear to the office (or to teach geography lol). I do like the 2nd outfit though. So definitely 'do you', don't feel like you have to conform to what your friends are wearing but don't be afraid to be a bit out there as well.
I used to go to a great bar in Liverpool now sadly closed with such a mix of people, everyone having a brilliant time, wearing everything from jeans to evening wear and everything in between. Its just that type of city really.

Body con dressed IN THE DAY FOR A MEAL OUT...

Wtaf.

whatisthisinhere · 04/11/2021 09:01

Last time I went for something daytime in Liverpool, I wore a leather mini, sparkly polo, black pointy ankle boots, and I definitely wore tights -it was cold! I also wore full makeup, and made sure my nails were done. I was quite underdressed compared to other people, but it was as dressed up as I could be in the day. I wore a smart wool coat

LolaSmiles · 04/11/2021 09:01

I'm not Liverpool based, but the people I know who are into the glammed up for shopping and drinks look all seem to be wearing blazer dresses, the same caked on 'natural' look make up with huge false eyelashes, and identically done wavy/loose curls.

Crabwoman · 04/11/2021 09:08

Liverpool is a very individual city and you can wear pretty much whatever you want and still fit in. Panoramic is not a trendy bar pre se. It's for everyone. I live here and would totally wear your outfit for lunch out.

The one thing I would conceed is that everyone is immaculate here, whatever they are wearing. Be that school kids, grannies or goths!

lawofdistraction · 04/11/2021 09:14

When did this happen in Liverpool? I was there in the 90s first as a student and then worked there for a few years. I don't remember it being massively over the top then - scouse girls would definitely be more dressed up than students, but I don't think anybody wore body con in the day, never saw people with their hair in rollers etc

Ginfilledcats · 04/11/2021 09:25

Hi Op,
You've had lots of great advice and your silk skirt outfit sounds perfect! It's what I would wear.

But then I think we have similar style as I'd also wear (and have bits very similar) to the model you uploaded.

I also totally understand wanting to fit in with the people you're with, or rather, not sticking out like a sore thumb!

I think the skirt and top and block heels will look lovely and comfy too.

I don't like the body con no coat even in depths of winter look! But that's just me.

As a fellow Liverpudlian, I highly doubt Any of us Liverpudlians will judge you for what you wear there at all!

Have a fab time! Panoramic is lovely!

XiCi · 04/11/2021 11:38

I know it's really hard to believe but the 90s was 30 years ago Grin

As a scouser this thread is fascinating. There are lots of us who go out out and just drag a brush through our hair, head out and crack on. I've never worn fake tan, or nails or lashes. To me the over dressed ones look like they are from out of town and trying to emulate a look they think is appropriate, but isn't actually worn by many scouse women.

Your original outfit looked perfect.
