Has anyone found a blonde box dye that is actually decent and doesn't make your hair yellow/ginger?

I can't afford highlights any more and my hair has gone so flat and awful with terrible roots, it's making me feel grim! Was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent box dye kit?

If your hair is going ginger from blonde box dye it’s because it hasn’t lifted your hair fully to blonde, ie the bleach is too weak for your colour hair. So you need to buy lighter blonde boxes. Lighter colour on the box = stronger bleach inside.

Op there aren't any brilliant cheap quick fix box dyes for blondes... if it was that easy I wouldn't be paying £125 every 6 weeks for my full head platinum blonde roots.

Have a dabble by all means but expect tones of orange & it looking nothing like a salon job.

Second @pollyroo really, sorry! I’m having the chop and going au natural as I cannot justify the price of being blonde anymore.

I use nice and easy light ash blonde and the colour I get is near enough the same as the box.
Sick of paying ridiculous prices so dyed all over.
Now get roots done twice out of one box.

What is your natural colour? Do you have lots of natural red tones?

Hi I’m naturally a golden blonde but I don’t have lots of red tones. I don’t expect it to be as good as highlights just something half decent that I can use for six months or so

How is that helpful to the OP?

The most important thing is to tone after bleaching - if you let bleach lift your colour and don't tone, likelihood is you will end up with some brassy tones.
If you're trying to avoid yellowy-orange tones, a good blue or purple toner can do wonders.

This. Or even simpler, use a purple anti brassiness tone shampoo, there are tons of them, just search ‘purple shampoo’ on Amazon.

I've used a kit I found in home bargains. You'll need someone to do it fit you though. It worked a treat on dark blonde hair

When I did box dye during lockdown, I left the bleach on for far longer than the recommended time and I also left the toner on for far longer than the recommended time.

Bleach: garnier olia

Toner: I think it was the Bblonde Jerome Russell one in icy blonde.

The first time I did it, I got orange hair, I waited 3 weeks then bleached again.

(I was going from dark brown to ice blonde!)

Not me, but my sister used the Jerome Russell Hi Lift bleach with 30 volume creme. She highlighted it herself and it looked amazing. Her hair was light brown/chesnut at the time. She then used the Fanola 'No Yellow' shampoo {Its about £7.95 on amazon for a massive bottle} which acts as a toner and gets rid of brassiness.
I really recommend the Fanola shampoo, it's really, really good at brightening blond and keeping it fresh. I bought a bottle after using some of my sisters. {I have some balayage} They also do one called ' No Orange' to get rid of orangey tones after bleaching.

There aren't really any box dyes which will lift your hair enough to avoid the orangey/yellow tones. You need proper bleach, it's best to use salon stuff as it's less damaging on the hair but they can be expensive. Jerome Russell bleach is OK though, you can get it in Boots.

Toners won't do anything if the hair is not lifted light enough.

I use a wella highlighting kit, and leave it on longer then recommended, it brings my dark mousy hair to very light blonde and then I use a purple shampoo and leave it on ten minutes or so, sometimes some of the hair has a little lilac look, I don't mind it, plus it come out (the lilac ) after a few washes, this kit must of been around for thirty years or more, that how long I have been using it.

B Blonde maximum blonding or highlighting kits

I use Garnier Nutrisse 7N dark blonde - and have had multiple complements on it (including from my hairdresser who wanted to know where I’d gone for my colour)

I’ve been everything from dirty dark blonde to ice white platinum using box dyes - it can definitely be done.

Blonde can be difficult and does need maintenance though - but you don’t need to spend a fortune every six weeks unless you want to.

You just need to take a bit of time with it, do a bit of research and practice.

I've been using e-Salon through lockdown. Lovely colour. You have a colourist that you can email with adjustments for the next colour if you aren't quite happy.

L’Oreal excellence in either 9 or 10. 9.1 is an ash blonde, 9.3 is a strawberry blonde. Look on boxes for colours. This range covers grey so it may be because the peroxide is stronger is gives a good blonde but even hairdressers don’t believe it’s box dye. Also have a few T bar highlights twice a year.

Exactly this! I found only those that have 'Ash' in the name work without leaving the copper, reddish tones. Look for lightest ash varieties until you find one that works for you and stick with it. Until they change the formulation and it doesn't work as well. Leave on for about 30 min instead of recommended 20 min.

I used a Jerome Russel highlighting kit on DD's hair. Her natural hair does have a gingery shine in the light, so I thought it would turn her hair orange and tried to talk her out of it. It actually worked suprisingly well. No orange or yellow tint.

The prices at the hairdressers are eye watering now! I used Loreal excellence creme 8.1 natural ash blonde on mid-brown hair. Its not super blonde but it is a nice light ash colour. I also use the fanola purple shampoo.
