At 46? And I work in a library. I like the idea of smart trousers, a shirt and a knitted vest 😢

I think the question is more like, are your boobs small enough.

Sorry. I think if you're not too [0][0] it's a good look.

LubaLuca · 24/10/2021 22:53

I don't know if you mean a tank top or a knitted waistcoat. Either way, you're not too old, no. My mum is in her 70s and wears them.

Taoneusa · 25/10/2021 00:12

Could look very good. Yes! Go for it!

RampantIvy · 25/10/2021 00:14

What is a sweater vest?

Aquamarine1029 · 25/10/2021 00:17

Depending on your shape, I think it could look fabulous.

Catlover77 · 25/10/2021 00:55

Are you American? Do you mean what is referred to as a Tank Top?

I used to wear them but can’t now with a large chest

Whataday21 · 25/10/2021 01:08

I loved this look in the early noughties. I think it's great for boobs, because we can finally wear all our shirts that gape at the boobs underneath. Remember when people just started wearing actual vests over shirts instead of actual tank tops?

Sweater vest is something from Friends.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 25/10/2021 01:44

if you have to ask then you are not allowed!
It's the same rule for Doc Martens, mermaid hair, black nail varnish and non-matching socks (to mention a few).

Might be generational. I am 26, think this is the first time in my lifetime that they have come back into fashion? To me a tank top is like a sleeveless tshirt, often ribbed. Presumably I’ve only encountered the knitted version via American tv (Friends?) so I would more readily understand sweater vest even though I wouldn’t use the word sweater outside of this context.
thedevilinablackdress · 25/10/2021 07:50

Of course not.
I posted on this thread about my two lovely tank tops (and I'm the same age, not that it matters)

Small boobs: no age limit
Big boobs: no sweater vest

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 25/10/2021 08:00

A vest in the US is a waistcoat so a sweater vest is a sleeveless cardigan type thing. Chandler did wear them a lot in Friends. I'd definitely wear one if I saw one because my boobs are on the large side and cardigans are less likely to give me the monoboob look that I try to avoid.

Maireas · 25/10/2021 09:12

Like pp I'm not sure what you mean. I think you must be in the US. Here we call them tank tops or sleeveless sweaters (I think)
Perhaps attach a picture of the kind of thing you mean?

Maireas · 25/10/2021 09:13

I haven't seen sleeveless cardigans in the shops for ages - I used to wear them a lot!

Pigtailsandall · 25/10/2021 09:23

I'm Canadian and totally get what you mean. I wore one as a teen in 2000-ish and it wasn't a good look on me, though personally I didn't think there was an age limit. I do think they can look a bit matronly.

And like pp said, I will always think of Chandler Bing when I see a sweater vest!

Brightmagic2021 · 25/10/2021 09:27

Yes they’re back in and not very flattering on me.

Coffee4Queen · 25/10/2021 09:27

She says in her post “I like the idea of smart trousers, a shirt and a knitted vest “ so took it to meant a vest like the photo I’ve attached.

Go for it @Imsosorryalan75

Excuse my typos!

Maireas · 25/10/2021 09:29

That's a nice look.
Smart and functional.

Lowlifeinhighplaces · 25/10/2021 09:37

I have a few tank tops, love them wear them with shirts/polo necks/long sleeved t/shirts depending on how cold it is.

Must admit I am the only person I know or have seen wearing them, bought them mostly in the States a long time ago. also have a really nice soft yellow one which is a mans golfing top.

Go for it!

SansaClegane · 25/10/2021 10:07

Can someone explain to me why it is not a good idea with big boobs? Confused I used to wear them over shirts and always thought it was a good look (as one PP said, doesn't matter if the shirt gapes between the boobs then) but I'm rather large of chest and wondering if I've unknowingly committed a big fashion crime!

QueenDanu · 25/10/2021 10:16

Well that's a good point, that they cover up a gaping shirt. I just personally thought that they added bulk so I was glad that my chest was quite flat.

I had a knitted tank top that I got about 2007 so they were at least briefly 'in' then.

QueenDanu · 25/10/2021 10:17

I like this look. I'd wear it with a long sleeve navy jersey top.
BestIsWest · 25/10/2021 10:48

Are they back? I used to love them back in the day. Are waistcoats back too?

EugeniaGrace · 25/10/2021 11:09

I don’t think there is an age limit.

The worst accusation is you might get accused of drawing too much like a . . . Librarian?

But librarian-chic is definitely coming back into style.
