Please inspire me: what dresses are you wearing with black tights?

I have quite a few dresses, but they’re all summery - midi, short sleeves, fairly thin. I can layer a roll-neck underneath, but they still look a bit rubbish with tights.

So please inspire me: what wintry dresses (long sleeve? Jersey? Knit dresses?) are you wearing with black tights and boots? I think they look better on me if they’re knee length or above, especially with tights, but I might be wrong.

I have plenty of black boots - long leather ones, chunky biker ones, patent ankle with a little heel, so I think it’s the dresses that are the problem.

I’ve got a corduroy one from Thought. I’ve also got my eye on one from Poetry but trying to justify the price 😬

@SalsaLove Ooh that moss coloured one is so nice. Corduroy shirt dress is a good shout. Also would need to sell half my wardrobe first to justify it!

Yah, but it's made of hemp, organic cotton and yak, so it's authentically expensive Grin

That's a lovely dress for someone with no cleavage.

I wear fitted wool shift dresses - Hobbs and Laura Ashley mainly. I think black tights go best with weighty, slightly textured fabrics.

I do not have no cleavage!

😂 But is it British yak?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2021 08:38

Watching. I’m really struggling to find short dresses.

dudsville · 23/10/2021 08:51

I don't do black tights, I do dark grey, but I don't think that matters! I've got a cord and a denim dress from COS and some flannel dresses from Uniqlo. Also from unique they have some heavy boxy cropped flannel over shirts, I have the grey and the brown, which are cosy over dresses.

Anni3getyourgun · 23/10/2021 09:43

Anyone got any nice jumper dresses not made of acrylic and not £££?

Again, uniqlo and COS have some nice ones in cotton and wool mixes.

I've got this one which is really cheap but is polyester. It's really soft and warm and also comes in grey and dark red. Looks lovely with tights and boots. I sized up as I didn't want it too clingy and it's quite flattering (I'm not small!)

OublietteBravo · 24/10/2021 08:40

I have this shirt dress from M&S which I love. I wear it with black tights. They also have a corduroy version which isn’t £££.

MargosKaftan · 24/10/2021 09:04

OK recently bought this dress, bare with me, it is Landsend, which should be old lady clothes, but its very nice. Size down and I went for the petite to get above knee. (Someone on here a few years ago pointed out when they had plain cashmere jumpers on sale and I bought one, so I get their marketing now even though most is Nana clothes.) dress

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 24/10/2021 09:27

Keep an eye on the Arket sale section for jumper dresses.

My most useful winter dress is from the (love/hate) Hush. The Iris Dress in midnight, just simple and easy to throw on for work it home.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 24/10/2021 10:41

I fancied a plaid dress, with hick tights and boots for winter. I went for this, quite nice casual dress and it is very soft too.

TangoTarantella · 24/10/2021 13:11

Where’s that from @WowIlikereallyhateyou?

I’ve got this one from Thought, it isn’t short but I really like it on.

I’ve just bought a black courdroy shirt dress from
Sainsbury’s. Looks like the Poetry one in the link earlier, but 1/6 of the price Grin

It is Ralph Lauren Polo, but was on sale.

Anni3getyourgun · 25/10/2021 08:51

The M and S ones are lovely!
Also, how about a courderoy or denim pinafore op?

NeedWineNow · 25/10/2021 13:49

I'm in the office today and have on the Zara Spotty Dress from a few years ago (which I dyed red) together with black opaques and flat suede pumps, although I have worn black suede ankle boots with it.

I tend to stick to a tiered style dress and the company that I buy from has got them in courderoy at the moment so I might pick up one of those, otherwise I've got knit dresses or knee length thicker dresses in navy/black/burgundy.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 25/10/2021 14:02

I just bought this cord dress from M and Co: www.mandco.com/cord-style-midi-dress-berry/1096354.html?dwvar_1096354_color=0705&cgid=10008010#q=cord+dress&start=2
I looks really nice on. It is quite thick though.

hennybeans · 25/10/2021 14:07

I have a few linen dresses in dark colours from Seasalt that I've been wearing with tights and a long sleeve shirt under. I know linen is for summer but I think it looks alright. Maybe because of the texture of the fabric.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/10/2021 14:42

I've been to town today and didn't see a single thing I liked. Everything is long and many things are in that horrible, scratchy viscose stuff. Even in the 'expensive' shops, I couldn't find anything even approximating what I want (a short dress, long sleeves, not too thick and not too high necked, in a half decent fabric).
