What are we feeling about Borg/Faux Shearling coats

They are nearly everywhere this autumn/winter. I saw this sleeveless River Island version on a YouTube ‘influencer’ video. I loved it and couldn’t resist ordering it immediately. Unfortunately, when it arrived, although I liked it, I didn’t love it, so back it went.

I thought maybe it would look better with sleeves and buttons (I really didn’t like the press studs. So I tried this version on in the shop. I liked it much more, but suspect the fabric would begin to look scruffy after maybe just one season, plus it’s very much a fashion item, so could look dated fairly quickly. Therefore, I felt I couldn’t justify the price (it’s a shame H&M don’t do one). They do feel gorgeously snuggly on though, so it’s tempting.

My mother wears things like that. She's 84 and smells of mould, dust and weirdly, wet dog when it rains when she's wearing it. She doesn't have a dog, though.

I love them, warm and practical and they look really good on. I've got a more neutral coloured one from next, which will be getting a lot of wear this winter!

Gingefringe · 27/10/2021 07:20

You look great in that coat AnnieSnap - what's the sizing like? Reviews say it's large size so did you size down?
Very tempted to get this one!

LilyTheMink · 27/10/2021 08:09

I don't like that they are made of plastic and at a price point that some people will but for a 'season' and then dispose.

BigHeartyTruffle · 27/10/2021 08:14

I absolutely love them! They are so warm but also (in my very dated and unstylish opinion Wink) look great. I like to dress quite quirky so a borg coat and DMs is the perfect addition to any winter outfit for me. I also find them to be quite durable as long as you look after them! I just gave my 3 year old one a bobble shave and it spruced up nicely.

I think the Boden one looks fab on you OP Smile, it’s a gorgeous colour and I think the style is pretty classic.

If you like it, wear it! It’s only fast fashion if you religiously follow trends and throw away stuff every year

DukeofEarlGrey · 27/10/2021 08:29

I like them! I have just bought a brown one in M&S and don’t think of it as fast fashion (which I don’t buy into) because of the 70s vibe.

OP, you look fab! Somehow it also goes well with your dog — I hope he gets to be your accessory Grin

Here’s mine:

stalkersaga · 27/10/2021 08:35

I can't bring myself to go there because I just think that fabric looks super tatty so quickly. That said, OP, you look lovely and happy in the blue.

I'm sticking to my boiled-wool overshirts (I have two from stories.com last season).

I bought this from Tesco, but they have it on next online too. It looks beautiful and has a lovely shape

Thanks @Gingefringe. Remember a lot of Boden reviews are from pretty conservative (with a small C) women, often from the US. They are not supposed to be worn fitted of course. I bought my normal size and feel it’s a perfect, roomy fit, but not horribly oversized.

@DameMaureen Thank you 🙂

@DukeofEarlGrey the fabric of that M&S one looks good, but I’m not keen on double breasted clothes, so it wouldn’t work well for me.

@Ontheblink the next one looks amazingly nice given the price.
