Over 50s influencers

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 12/10/2021 12:31

Inspired by the over 30s thread I would love some recommendations for some over 50s influencers. Nothing too dressy - I have two dogs and two teenage children and a full time job.

I like Alyson Walsh @THATSNOTMYAGE. She's taller and thinner than me, but I like her casual glamour.

BarefootHippieChick · 13/10/2021 21:13

Definitely not edgy

Not at all. She just looks like a Boden yummy mummy to me. I haven't read her blog so I can't comment on that but I wouldn't wear anything I've seen in her photos.

VanCleefArpels · 13/10/2021 21:43

Those who say that MLC is too perfect etc obviously haven’t read her posts about her abusive first marriage, how her husband adopted her son as a toddler, the issues they’ve had running their own business, health issues and all the rest. Fair enough that her style doesn’t appeal but quite unfair to make assumptions about her personally. She has created a really great community that discusses all manner of issues that we 50 somethings have to face. Some weeks the fashion is very much an after thought. (No I’m not her, don’t know her IRL etc etc)

ShrikeAttack · 13/10/2021 22:36

Is that a serious recommendation or a joke @toolazytothinkofausername?

Sooverthemill · 14/10/2021 08:24

It's absolutely true that wearsmymoney does loads of affiliated stuff but in the last year she has given up her full time job and is now freelance in the music business ( Covid hasn't been kind to live music) and is earning more from her blog. She is honest about all the paid stuff. Does my bum also has tons of paid for content and goes on free holidays etc ( the most recent I felt very inappropriately flogged and I stopped reading her until she got back). But these days people are pretty open about the earning from blogs /Instagram as they have to be. It's their job. If I don't like it I scroll on. DMBL40 has a great sense of humour and I love wearsmymoney dog ( dead ringer for mine)

KatieBenz · 14/10/2021 09:07

Totally agree with @VanCleefArpels. MLC is very open and honest about the difficult periods in her life. A lot of the outfits she wears would look awful on me, as like OP, I am short, big-boobed and a ‘solid’ 14 😀. Despite that, I really enjoy her weekly blog and especially enjoy the travel and Christmas sections.
I would love to find a blogger with a similar build to me, so will be following this topic with interest.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 14/10/2021 09:12

@KatieBenz - Maybe there is a market for an Insta account called ”a solid 14” Wink

@ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul now there’s an idea. 😀. Would be good to get some feedback. Could perhaps incorporate a voting button for the daily outfit. ‘Yay’ for elegant, sophisticated, middle aged woman. ‘Nay’ for haggard, buxom, beer serving wench. 😉

Little Spree is good but I don’t like her constant flogging /new clothes. It’s very repetitive. She’s got cool style though and I enjoyed the videos she did/when she writes. She also seems a nice person.

doorornottodoor · 14/10/2021 09:38

Deborah Brett for escapism. Seems a nice person and has an amazing lifestyle. I do think too much material on her kids though and I stopped following her after one too many “I’m gorgeous” poses. I did message her about an item of clothing and she was very sweet in her reply. She’s very natural looking too.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 14/10/2021 09:38

@AnnieSnap

I have checked out Mid Life Chic and I’m disappointed. All the latest clothes she’s promoting are the very things from Boden that I scroll past. I buy bits of Boden myself, but wouldn’t be seen dead in the floral monstrosity long dresses (I like some patterned shorter ones) and I’m 62! She could never be described as edgy could she? Also, she should be on a salary from Boden 🤷‍♀️
I thought the same, i would not wear any of that stuff, for a long time anyways.
Floisme · 14/10/2021 09:39

I go for the occasional wander around Instagram but that's it - I got sick and tired of all the shilling and unfollowed. But I watch a number of women age 50-80+ who still get photographed. My current style crush is Fran Lebowitz - she's the reason I'm now hankering for cowboy boots. Also Jane Birkin, Yoko Ono, Carolyn Martens/Fiona Shaw (the only reason I stuck with Killing Eve as long as I did) Sofia Coppola. And Vivienne Westwood for reminding me that style rules are there to be broken. Also, although a mere 40-something, Zadie Smith - I love how she wears colour.

For the most part I don't know where they shop, and couldn't afford to copy them if I did, but I use them for ideas and inspiration.

doorornottodoor · 14/10/2021 09:40

Just started following thesilverkat after this thread -I like her style. Now I want a black waistcoat Grin. I’ve been influenced !

doorornottodoor · 14/10/2021 09:42

Oh and clubforty.Claire

She’s a stylist. Great style and has brilliant reels- really helpful on styling what you’ve got. Much better than just reams of new stuff

She's lovely and great for escapism. The Bar Mitzvah for her son was a bit OTT though.

She's not classically beautiful but confident and striking. Her hair being cut short transformed her look.

Wardrobe Icons is a bit silly but they do recommend some good stuff.

Did you see the fishnet top under the waistcoat?!

doorornottodoor · 14/10/2021 11:35

@BarefootHippieChick yes she looked fabulous! I like that waistcoat. If you scroll back she’s worn it with loads. It’s got a vintage look to it which I love.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/10/2021 11:54

@Sooverthemill I wasn’t suggesting for a second that there is dodgy non-disclosure going on, so I hope it didn’t come across that way. I stopped following DMBL40 a few years ago because the content stopped being enjoyable (or even aspirational) for me. I enjoy WMM’s content and her style, but recently I do find myself thinking “would you REALLY wear/suggest that if you weren’t being paid to?”. (Eg recent partnerships with White Stuff.)

The accounts I enjoy tend to be women who have a few thousand followers and are sharing clothes they have bought. I guess the WMM of five years ago! I don’t follow many actual “influencers” now I think about it, once they start getting paid for it they lose the authenticity that makes me follow the accounts in the first place.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 14/10/2021 12:24

@Judystilldreamsofhorses - this I understand. My most regular Instagram visits are to people I like who aren’t influencers but just dress well/ in an aspirational way. For me, top of my list is my absolute girl crush Gabby Logan who is everyone I want to be and everyone I want to look like Smile

I love Isthistooyoungforme.

She looks a bit like a better version of me and her style is like a bettre thought out version of what I'm going for. So looking at her stuff inspires me to 'maybe I could look like that...' action and shopping.

Greceghanem is utterly cool and beautiful in her 50s. I love to look at her but her life and clothes feel unattainable.

I still love Doesmybumlook50. Yes it's obviously a job and she has clear affliations, but she also gives herself authentically to the audinece I feel, especially in her writing.
But I don't look or dress like her so it's more for beauty chat.

I also like a lot Bethgoodrham.stylist, she is not one of 'big' names. She lives a seemingly more 'normal' life and dresses for this and gives loads of great tips on styling in short videos.

cosmosforall · 14/10/2021 13:05

Any recommendations for my demographic - fat and 50?

MalagaNights · 14/10/2021 14:21

Erica Davies isn't fat but she's also not skinny & I love her style www.instagram.com/p/CUp-LbHjerw/?utm_medium=copy_link

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 14/10/2021 15:16

Hmm, Erica Davies is very pretty but I would look like a sack of spuds in those voluminous dresses that she favours. I am really in the more tailored camp to try and shave those inches off!

Pheasantlysurprised · 14/10/2021 15:24

Everyone seems to look the same, with slight variations, like some mass, agreed upon contemporary 'look', especially the hair and general vibe. I tire of this production line shit too easily. I don't want something way out, or batshit crazy, but I wish there was more true, individual style. Something that doesn't look like a perpetual advert reel for the tired, uk, high cost high street.
