Over 50s influencers

Inspired by the over 30s thread I would love some recommendations for some over 50s influencers. Nothing too dressy - I have two dogs and two teenage children and a full time job.

Trayslounge is great. Most of the brands she wears are high street but she styles them all so well (she’s also a mum and a very cute dog) .

Mercurial123 · 13/10/2021 12:47

LoveLabradors interesting. I never felt she was particularly sincere. I remember when her son was an intern and she was writing how difficult it was to get a position. She's in marketing and worked for Selfridges so she has contacts. Not a word about those who haven't got rich parents to fund a London lifestyle whilst working for v. little money.

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/10/2021 12:58

I'm American so most of mine are US based. My current favorite is Style at a Certain Age.

Cathirae has such a cool quirky fashion sense. She always gives me Vivienne Westwood vibes.

BarefootHippieChick · 13/10/2021 13:02

Also thesilverkat always gets my vote for her black and white animal print which is my guilty pleasure.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 13/10/2021 13:27

Ohh, trayslounge has gone on my list! I already follow instylebyhelen but had thought she was in her early to mid forties.
I think my biggest problem is me. Firstly I am a bit lumpy - a solid size 14 with huge boobs. I want to dress like these influencers and I do not want to dress for the shape I actually am. I have the posture and grace of a cart horse and I am a bit of a slob when it comes to personal grooming. Through the pandemic and lockdown I have got out of the habit of wearing make up and outfits. I really need to take myself in hand.

I have checked out Mid Life Chic and I’m disappointed. All the latest clothes she’s promoting are the very things from Boden that I scroll past. I buy bits of Boden myself, but wouldn’t be seen dead in the floral monstrosity long dresses (I like some patterned shorter ones) and I’m 62! She could never be described as edgy could she? Also, she should be on a salary from Boden 🤷‍♀️

AnnieSnap · 13/10/2021 14:58

Just checked out The Silver Kat, that’s more like it!

BringMeTea · 13/10/2021 15:29

I must say Midlifechic seems like a lovely lady and I like that she covers a broader range of topics on her blog. Fashion wise it's a big no though. She definitely dresses in a more mature than her years way. Regarding Boden. She was slating them for years for ignoring her... then they got on board so she is all over them. Squeaky wheel obviously worked though! I think she needs to rename the blog too. It makes me wince. She has enough of a following to change it without harming her numbers.

Wears My Money is a couple years off 50 but much more my style. Also like Jess Fashion Style Edit though she is more You Tube, and under 50 and wealthy but what the hell, I like the style.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/10/2021 15:44

@LoveLabradors

I think she was dropped by Hush mercurial - she was all over Hush up to a couple of years ago but never mentioned now. Now she’s back to Boden and John Lewis. She does write very well and undoubtedly knows her stuff about the fashion industry but something about her comes across as rather smug. She just seems to promote her perfect family and idyllic, privileged life whilst bizarrely quite often playing the sympathy card for things. I will admit that is probably quite unfair and I’m sure she’s a decent and nice person but perhaps a little more self awareness required in her writing. But in her latest post about Crete the snobbery was very apparent.
I agree with this. Its all so perfect. Just a little too perfect imo... Im not really sure that I like her style. Its a little too polished and grown up for me.

Definitely NOT edgy.
ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 13/10/2021 15:58

No Midlifechic is not edgy but she doesn’t try to be! I really like two things about her; she writes well and knows her industry and she has built/is building a following - she’s not just flogging clothes.
Some of what she wears isn’t “me” and then some of it is.
Another good writer, though too many dresses for my taste, is Kat Farmer(?), Doesmybumlook40 - I think maybe I am drawn to the written as much as the visual.

Blossomtoes · 13/10/2021 15:59

I like Accidental Icon. I was drawn to her because we have identical hair and we both wear sunglasses nearly all the time. I just wish I was as svelte as she is.

LoveLabradors · 13/10/2021 16:00

No her style isn’t to my taste - very mature. However each to their own with style and she’s a few years older than me. But she does write some interesting stuff occasionally and to be honest it passes the time with a cup of tea! Sometimes I just find it fascinating the amount that influencers share about their lives! To give her some credit she does put effort in to her blog unlike DMBL40 who just manically flogs everything and anything on her Instagram.

VanCleefArpels · 13/10/2021 17:09

I do find it a bit weird that people say they step”disappointed” in an influencer, like the influencer has some kind of duty to please everyone. The whole point (and benefit) of blogs and social media is the variety. If you don’t like what they say or wear or represent then surely the response is to shrug the shoulders and move on. Not feel “disappointed”. Nobody is going to appeal to all comers and none of them owe us anything - if they can make a living doing what they do then all power to them

VanCleefArpels · 13/10/2021 17:10

FEEL disappointed not step 🤦🏻‍♀️

awaynboilyurheid · 13/10/2021 17:56

Agree never I like reading her posts but it’s all a bit too perfect at times, and a wee bit narcissistic, and I remember one time she had a very expensive cashmere cardigan “for working from home” I thought no way could I spend that for something to slob about in!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/10/2021 18:46

@doesntmatter

Remus what do you mean?
I just can't warm to her. Her clothes don't really call to me. She used to be very corporate and now just seems to wear whatever she can get free from Boden. I just don't feel that she's truly got a 'style' or things that she properly loves for themselves. I find it all a bit depressing.
MintMe · 13/10/2021 18:54

I don't think she's 50, and she's based in Ireland but I like and follow Sonya Heslin. Some of her outfits are a bit older than I dress, but a lot are right in my mid 40s style zone.

AppleWitch · 13/10/2021 19:00

Not a UK instagrammer but I really like chroniclesofmk.

She's in Australia though so dressing for opposite seasons.

EllaPaella · 13/10/2021 19:44

@ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul instylebyhelen is 53.
I think midlifechic always looks immaculately groomed - she is just a little too groomed for me. She has definitely become a billboard for Boden lately.
I really like livelovesara but I think she's probably a bit younger.

I'm going to defend midlifechic! I always read midlifechic and find her very down to earth. She does have a higher income than some people but she's in her 50s and she and her husband both work full time so by then many people will be . She does still get hush stuff but she's made no secret of the fact that she hasn't liked much stuff over last year or so . She absolutely knows her stuff retail wise and I think she's always worth a look for style trends. I also have found her sympathetic to readers especially over Covid. I don't often buy stuff she has on her blog but I do often click through to look. And I'm not her friend, relative, publicist!

That's not my age, wears my money, does my bum look40, etc. If you look at any of them you will see who they follow and vice versa

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/10/2021 21:08

I’ve read Midlifechic for years - she’s a good bit older than me and I am not keen on her actual style, but I think she writes very intelligently and her blog reads really well. She has regular partnerships with various brands, including Boden.

Style-wise I like Wears My Money who I actually think shills a lot more than MLC, affiliate links all over the place.
