Tried some boyfriend jeans - not good!

I see others in boyfriend or mom jeans and really wanted to update my look and do ordered some boyfriend jeans. I’m a 14-16 and my god I looked horrendous! It was ok from the front but from the side I looked massive.

I think I have to accept these looser styles do not suit my shape/size. Long live skinny jeans!

Same here! I’ve lost quite a bit of weight over the last couple of years and thought I would give wide leg jeans a bash and they were horrific!

I am quite hippy and they just looked AWFUL on me. So back they went haha

Congratulations on the weight loss!

I think if you want to look like you're in touch with / care about fashion, you need to let go of the idea of trying to make yourself look as small as possible. Your clothing doesn't have to serve to make you look the thinnest you possibly can, and if that's the goal then that's totally fine but you're going to have to sacrifice looking like you're on trend in some areas.

NotImpossible · 12/10/2021 13:37

I've tried some recently and both times felt like I was spilling out over the top of them (next size up was too loose). I was never a low rise kind of person but it seems even mid rise is an issue for my waistline now! Such a shame as i love the way they look on other people.

But I love mom jeans!

Taoneusa · 12/10/2021 13:43

What actually are flattering on trend jeans for an apple shape now?

This.

Fashion at the moment has nothing whatsoever to do with looking thin or slim.

PurpleDaisies · 12/10/2021 13:54

I’m not bothered about looking on trend. I want to look good. Those sorts of jeans look awful on me too, even though I’m tall and pretty slim. My slim fit jeans are staying. They’re still everywhere in the shops so I think a lot of others are the same.

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 13:55

Regardless of how small or big they make me look, I don't really like myself in them either.

freshcarnation · 12/10/2021 13:55

Me too. I look like Spongebob

ExConstance · 12/10/2021 13:58

Out and about over the weekend I noticed more people wearing generous skinnies (as opposed to skin tight) and straight leg. Also less people wearing jeans at all, and more in skirts. I bought myself a pair of Levi 501 cropped in black. They are not cropped on me as I have quite short legs but I will roll them up to wear with Chelsea boots. A good compromise, fitted through the waist and hips and a little wider on the straight legs.

Iheartmysmart · 12/10/2021 14:01

I had a fab pair from Gap that fit perfectly and didn’t make me look ridiculous. Sadly they disintegrated though wear and I never found a suitable replacement. Being less than 5ft tall with absolutely no waist hasn’t helped the search.

I eventually splashed out and bought a pair of G Star Kate boyfriend jeans and they are pretty close. The denim is quite thick though so they don’t hang quite as well. Hopefully they’ll soften with wear.

Africa2go · 12/10/2021 14:10

But don't most people want to avoid looking bigger than they are? I Have to say I'm in my 40s though so this may be quite an old fashioned view. I am conscious that I was slimmer when I was younger / pre children so I already feel bigger than I want to, and so I don't want clothes to make me look even bigger.

What are you trying to say? (See my username) Grin.

I think the trouble with wide stuff is it can make you look like that is your shape the entire length of the jeans. I avoid wide leg trousers, which are supposed to be slimming, for that reason. Doesn't work on me. :)

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 14:17

I agree, I don't think it's unreasonable not to want to look bigger than you are!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/10/2021 14:21

I ditched skinny jeans a few years ago. I am a very pear shaped size 10 and they were never a great look on me. The baggy top/slim bottom hid my small waist and flat tummy, but emphasised my rather generous arse. I find a high waist with a tucked in or slightly cropped top suits my shape very well, and despite a looser bottom makes me look far slimmer.

I think it’s about playing with proportions to find a flattering silhouette - and if that is skinny jeans, then that is fine!

I am the same age group so relate to what you’re saying but I have a daughter who is 18 (and whose friends are all 18-25) and in that age group they really aren’t at all interested in looking slimmer - in fact they wear everything totally oversized and baggy! Dd is a size 8 and wears size 14 jeans Confused but then I wouldn’t want to wear the same things they do anyway! I just find it really interesting. She has friends who a size 22 and they wear big baggy jeans and huge oversized sweatshirts too. It’s definitely a “thing”.
Roominmyhouse · 12/10/2021 17:49

I don’t necessarily dress to look slimmer or thin (not sure that’s even possible at a size 14-16), but as @Peggytheredhen said I don’t want to look bigger than I am.

I’m sure there are looser styles out there which are flattering to the mid to larger sizes but I don’t think this is the one.

Teenage DD assures me that low rise boot cuts are all the rage now.

I've just bought a massive pair of high rise flares from & other stories and I love them!

What a mad comment, very few women who are a sixteen want to buy clothes that make them look like they are a size 22.
BradleyCooperwillbemine · 12/10/2021 18:28

You see, I like what LittleGwyneth says. I think she is right, but I am late 50's and a size 18 and I just cannot change my mindset to not trying to look as slim as possible - years of indoctrination by my mother and magazines!

Iheartmysmart · 12/10/2021 18:37

Weirdly though skinny jeans make me look bigger and my boyfriend ones are far more flattering. They are low rise and look fine with a top tucked in and a belt. Some of my skinnies need a long top over them or I look like a sausage.

Lovemusic33 · 12/10/2021 19:19

I bought some a couple months ago, won’t be buying anymore. I’m a size 12 with a bit of a tummy and they look awful on me, I will be going back to wearing skinnies, bought a new pair in M&S today.

whiteonesugar · 12/10/2021 19:36

Nothing to do with looking ‘thin’ but more to do with looking like a sack of shit lol

I have mom jeans which aren’t skinny and I like them, the wide leg look just didn’t do it for me.

I have wide leg trousers which I love but it’s the thick denim that looks hideous on me. Some people really pull it off though - hate those people… 😆

Gherkingreen · 12/10/2021 19:42

Boyfriend are perfect on me as I'm tall (5ft11), with a small waist, flatish stomach and toned but chunkier thighs, so they just flatter my shape. So comfortable too, I wear them all year round. Never been a fan of skinnies on me.

Divebar2021 · 12/10/2021 20:02

I find it a bit odd you’d try one pair on and declare anything other than skinny jeans to be inappropriate. You need to try dozens of styles on. However I can understand if you live somewhere where no-one else has adopted this change that you don’t feel very motivated to go through that palaver. I recently went away to another city in the U.K. and was interested that most people were still wearing skinnies. In my town it’s about 60% new styles versus 40% skinny jeans.
