Tried some boyfriend jeans - not good!

I see others in boyfriend or mom jeans and really wanted to update my look and do ordered some boyfriend jeans. I’m a 14-16 and my god I looked horrendous! It was ok from the front but from the side I looked massive.

I think I have to accept these looser styles do not suit my shape/size. Long live skinny jeans!

I agree the fashion at the moment isn’t meant to be particularly flattering. In the old days there was that whole ‘does my bum look big in this?’, it’s now fashionable to have a sort of ‘giant nappy’ look from behind. You see waif like teenage girls in ginormous, body smothering stuff.

I do think your eye adjusts. And also you need to try various options. I’ve been wearing some slightly baggier clothes and I feel more modern but less slim. But tighter fits feel a bit mean and not fresh. I guess it depends on which you prioritise, looking slimmer or trendier.

I was a teenager during the original 'today' look and despite our baggy jeans and jumpers we still worried about body size.

Africa2go · 12/10/2021 21:08

@Bagelsandbrie Yes I get that younger people aren't bothered about unflattering clothes (I have a 16yr old).

I think it's not necessarily a choice between looking trendy or flattering clothes. It's finding something that's on trend which suits your shape. Obviously that's the holy grail though and like looking for a needle in a haystack!

@Divebar2021

I find it a bit odd you’d try one pair on and declare anything other than skinny jeans to be inappropriate. You need to try dozens of styles on. However I can understand if you live somewhere where no-one else has adopted this change that you don’t feel very motivated to go through that palaver. I recently went away to another city in the U.K. and was interested that most people were still wearing skinnies. In my town it’s about 60% new styles versus 40% skinny jeans.
It’s not really that odd. I expect loads of people have tried on one pair of boyfriend jeans or mom jeans and thought the same as me. Who has time (or the inclination) to try on dozens of different styles of jeans. I have no idea what other people in my area are wearing either. I’m not so desperate to be on trend I’ll spend hours scouring the shops for the perfect pair of jeans, life’s too short when you already have skinnies which work 😜

Skinny jeans make anyone with a tummy and a bum (myself included) look like an Easter egg on legs. Slim/cigarette suit me much better, as do boyfriend jeans as long as they’re mid rise, not high waisted

DedalusBloom · 13/10/2021 19:27

M&S Harper jeans are a good middle ground - straightish leg and a high waist. I'm enjoying them much more than my skinnies.

Coogee · 13/10/2021 19:36

Teenage DD assures me that low rise boot cuts are all the rage now.

Excellent!

That’s what I was wearing today. I’m back on trend. Grin

@LittleGwyneth

I think if you want to look like you're in touch with / care about fashion, you need to let go of the idea of trying to make yourself look as small as possible. Your clothing doesn't have to serve to make you look the thinnest you possibly can, and if that's the goal then that's totally fine but you're going to have to sacrifice looking like you're on trend in some areas.
Totally this^ I’ve only recently figured this out and I’m so much happier with my style Smile
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/10/2021 09:07

Next 90’s jeans are quite flattering.

Mainly out of stock though🤷🏼‍♀️

nomoneytreehere · 15/10/2021 09:48

My daughter is a size 6 and looks about a 10/ 12 in hers. They are not slimming at all but I think she likes the fact she looks curvier.

Newmum29 · 15/10/2021 10:05

I look fat and I’m a 12. Don’t like skinnies either but they’re more flattering.

AbstractDot · 15/10/2021 23:47

So if I wear unflattering Mom jeans in size 18, people will think I'm a size 14 in unflattering jeans right?! Grin

RobertaFirmino · 15/10/2021 23:54

A pair of flattering jeans in a style which is not 'current' will always look better than a pair of unflattering jeans in a 'fashionable' style.

Is it even possible for a pair of flattering jeans to look 'unfashionable'? At the end of the day, they are just jeans! Jeans, as a whole, will always be 'in'.
