Let’s dissect M&S

Prompted by another thread in which M&S has been described as the cockroach of the British high street (something about being hideous but invincible) I wonder why it is that I find M&S so... comforting?? I haven’t bought any clothes there except pants for years and yet I still enjoy a semi-mooch around and feel reassured that it’s there if I need it... What is this bizarre place in my heart for M&S?!

I love M & S I buy work clothes and underwear from there and always find the quality good. DP buys suits there and the sparks card offers are pretty good too. The best thing is the a cup of tea and a slice of carrot cake from the cafe afterwards though!

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 09/10/2021 19:20

M & S drive me crazy. I was ready and willing to spend £50 on winter tights with them, but their range is fucking awful - just navy blue and black. I love snag but I need something more subtle like aubergine or dark green.
John Lewis are too expensive full price

I love marks for their boots and mens wear.My husband would be lost without them also!

Aderyn21 · 10/10/2021 21:22

Was in the Cardiff one today. I was quite impressed. Bought a green furry jacket - sounds disgusting but honestly, it's nice.
Also got a nice comfy (and pretty) non wire bra a couple of weeks ago and some nice chocolates for Christmas.

I went on Friday (with my mum, for the full comforting experience) and got this teddy jacket:

Then had a scone in the cafe. Good day all round.

Well I received my Rosie PJ's and dressing gown and they are gorgeous. Plus always have a discount with Sparks. Definitely going to order some Xmas bits.

I don't need it and the colours are all wrong - but that's a nice coat!

M&S scones/cake and tea in the cafe are always nice.

Who are the M&S stylists on Insta that people are following?

OublietteBravo · 12/10/2021 22:10

Just when you think they’re doing OK, you come across something like this, which doesn’t even look good on the model. In fact, it’s clear from the photo that even the model hates it.

Let’s dissect M&S

M&S is in my good books at the moment. They’ve got extra long jegging and trousers in a decent long length.

Longdistance · 12/10/2021 22:15

@OublietteBravo I was looking for tops and that top said ‘NOOOOOOO!’ I wish they’d sell sensible basics.
They advertised some awful padded costs recently. The poor models.

Atla · 13/10/2021 09:15

I often see things from a distance in m&s and think "Ooo that's nice" but then close up it's a weird length, or awful fabric, or wrong neck-line. I don't think they know who their market is really.

I do buy socks and pants from there Grin homeware is very good and stuff for babies/younger kids& school uniform. Range for older children is quite limited I think, not much that mine like anyway. Obviously love the cafe and m&s food for a treat.

WhereAreWeNow · 13/10/2021 14:42

I just got a lovely Ghost dress for £21 down from £69 so I'm feeling very pro M&S right now.

Was it the cherry dress? I was looking at that yesterday but they only had it in a size 8 and I’m a 12.
Redleaftea · 13/10/2021 16:06

I get lots from M&S due to their excellent ethical / environmental credentials. I'm a particular fan of the denim (particularly the higher price stuff), knitwear and active wear. Though for some reason their tops never last?

Redleaftea · 13/10/2021 16:09

Ooo and also the Apothecary home scents and toiletries are gorgeous and the packaging is really nice in the bathroom. I'm not on commission from them, honest!

AnnieSnap · 13/10/2021 21:26

I will say their Goodmove range is very good. I mostly wear Sweaty Betty to the gym because I find their stuff the most comfortable and stylish, but only once have I been stopped by someone who admired my leggings and top. Both were from M&S Goodmove range.
