Another M&S thread BUT this time a question about a dress I THINK might be nice (but not sure)

I’ve just managed to order one of these after online stock came back in in my size

www.marksandspencer.com/satin-puff-sleeve-midi-tea-dress/p/clp60524042#intid=carousel_FUNH_AT_RECENT_END_PDP_18_1:8e001165-67e3-47ec-b2c5-7946d62ac17e

Ignoring the silly pose Hmm what do you think of it?

I’m 45, tall size 10/12. Wanted something for a few nice family and social events I have this autumn.

I’m aiming to channel Keira Knightley in Atonement but may end up looking like the Jolly Green Giant.

Hmm just read a review that wasn’t up yet when I ordered it and it says the material feels more like lining fabric… might not be my cup of tea. I do love a bias cut though!

It'd be fine if it was silk rather than satin. Or some other fabric that didn't look so cheap and nasty. I'd avoid anything flammable when wearing it. Shame about the poor fabric choice as the colour and style is fine.

Claudethecat · 29/09/2021 17:29

It is out of stock! I like the colour but not sure about the cut. Although you are tall and slim so would probably look good on you, especially if you are not large of boob?

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 29/09/2021 17:31

Yes it’s the fabric that’s concerning me too… I will still try it on when it comes but my doubts have increased 😆

midsomermurderess · 29/09/2021 17:34

It's a pity if the fabric is poor quality because otherwise, I like it. The colour and bias cut are rather 1930s. But bias cut is a bit unforgiving if you aren't slim, in my experience

LastToBePicked · 29/09/2021 17:40

Love the colour and general style. Agree it could be better quality fabric, but it wouldn’t be £45 then.

My only wariness would be that style can be very unforgiving on the stomach. I am your size, what you’d generally call slim, but I can still look like I’m 3 months pregnant in those kind of dresses if I am not careful.

GreatestHits · 29/09/2021 17:40

The style + fabric will be extremely unforgiving.

DGFB · 29/09/2021 17:42

I love it! If it looks good on you that’s all that matters! I love satin, much more wearable than silk

NapoleonOzmolysis · 29/09/2021 18:05

If it's at all unflattering, you just need to put a knitted vest over the top Grin

Noogar · 29/09/2021 18:09

"We've styled this withboots" but hidden the boots and most the dress in the first picture.

It would look horrible on me as I'm large of boob. I would need to do what @NapoleonOzmolysis suggested as it's clearly a thing now. Maybe a bobble hat.

Strawbsaturno · 29/09/2021 18:12

I love it, and the colour would suit me. Unfortunately I’m far too fat to wear this. I think this will look lovely on you.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 29/09/2021 18:13

Yep I’m already thinking of styling it with a knitted vest Wink

I’m small of boob and my tummy is pretty flat, in fact I’m quite shapeless which is why I like bias cut as it gives me curves I don’t have.

BUT I really dislike crappy fabric so if it is crappy it’s going straight back!

Onlinedilema · 29/09/2021 18:14

I think if you are slim then yes, lovely colour too.
I agree it looks unforgiving so see how it looks on.

Noogar · 29/09/2021 18:16

Is a lovely colour 😍

Oddbutnotodd · 29/09/2021 18:25

I haven’t seen the actual dress but I have noticed that Ghost have made a cheaper line of dresses recently. I have a lovely patterned green dress that I bought from them last year. Full price was £165. I can only assume that the quality must be reduced for M and S. There are dresses in the sale on the Ghost website

Ruthietuthie · 29/09/2021 18:26

This has a feel of one of the Vampire's Wife dresses. I think that's what you REALLY want. As you are tall and slender, I think you can pull it off. The fabric is going to be the sticking point, as you say.

Councilworker · 29/09/2021 18:51

The colour is beautiful and the cut looks lovely although not one I could wear. Like the others I'd be worried about the fabric quality. The potential for static cling seems high as well as potential crackling from static shocks.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 29/09/2021 18:54

That VW dress is beautiful Ruthie! Now if only I can find a spare £1500 down the back of the sofa!

Yes it’s the static cling/looking like a Quality Street praline triangle I’m wary of…

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/09/2021 19:21

100% viscose made to look shiny. Not for me.

schoolsoutforever · 29/09/2021 20:06

I like it, especially the colour and would wear it , size 10/12, age 46. Would love a silk version but wouldn’t be able to afford it so I would go for this.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 29/09/2021 21:37

Thank you so much everyone.

The more I look at it the more I’ve decided it has Praline Triangle vibes so I think it’ll go straight back when it gets here unfortunately!

ramarama · 01/10/2021 23:14

So i have a Ghost dress in what I think is the same fabric (unless they have used a cheaper one for the M&S range) It is surprisingly flattering and feels a bit special. Looks expensive and slightly different somehow.

I am also bigger than you and found it strangely flattering. Will show lumps and bumps (you need the right underwear or a smoothing undergarment) but it fell in a sort of nice way and wasn't clingy overall.
Don't dismiss it just yet!

DramaAlpaca · 02/10/2021 00:31

I looked at that dress. I adore the colour and the style, but thought the fabric was too shiny and also that even though I'm tall I'd be too curvy for it.

It sounds like it'll suit your figure, as everyone says it all depends on the fabric. Please report back!

snowdaysalldays · 02/10/2021 03:52

love it!
