What footwear with black skinny (sorry) jeans for a first date?

Please can someone advise as I'm out of touch with what's acceptable...

I'm 40, live in sensible work shoes and trainers. Have a first date for the first time in years and I've no idea what to wear, but mainly on my feet. I'm not great in heels. 5'3. Help please?!!

I know you said you’re not great in heels but I would defo go heels (if only kitten) with skinny jeans and i’m the same height as you. It will just dress everything up!

MuckyPlucky · 23/09/2021 23:02

I’d do Doc Martens but then I’d only date men who also dressed like that.

Catouttahell · 23/09/2021 23:09

This is my usual get up... so out of the habit of going out that I don't know where to start! What would you wear? It's a riverside pub drink date.

Patent loafers

Catouttahell · 23/09/2021 23:12

Thank you both. Could you give any examples? Black heels? I like DMs but this guy is not a DMs wearer I think. He's a bit more glamorous than me

Catouttahell · 23/09/2021 23:13

Ooh yes I could manage loafers. I've got an hour to shop for anything I need after work tomorrow. Good shopping city so if I know what I need I should be able to target it quickly!

Why can you not stick with trainers? I think if it's a pub drink jeans and trainers will be best. There's nothing worse than being the person tottering in heels in an environment when everyone is in trainers or boots.
You can dress it up with a cute jacket and a nice bag but I don't think heels.

What about some chunky boots if you don't want to go in trainers?

Warmduscher · 23/09/2021 23:14

I’d go in your work gear. Plastic apron and all Grin

Catouttahell · 23/09/2021 23:16

I would be most comfortable in trainers but don't want him to think I'm not bothered. He's French Grin

It's a great look. Maybe I'd wait for the third date before I turn up in the full gear, inc. very comfortable worst witch shoes.

TeethingBabyHelp · 23/09/2021 23:19

I wear trainers out all the time, including "out out". By time hair and make up done and rest of outfit it's obvious it's your "look" rather than not bothered I think.

I hope your date goes really well! And that you report back and tell us all about it

Catouttahell · 23/09/2021 23:25

Aah thanks teething. I'm nervous like a teenager. Will report back Flowers

Slingback wedges

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 23/09/2021 23:45

Loafers sound good, or Chelsea boots with the jeans turned up? I am not personally a fan of the skinny jeans/heels look, especially if you are not usually a heels person.

I also like your work outfit!

Dontsayyouloveme · 23/09/2021 23:54

I wore skinny jeans on date last night with leopard print Aldo loafers. I’m 5ft 2 and he’s 6ft and it wasn’t an issue and I was mega comfy!

LizzieMacQueen · 24/09/2021 00:07

Date with a French man - you lucky thing.

What are you wearing on top?

I'd go with patent loafers, chunky heel to add a smidge of height. ( no socks obviously )

TaraR2020 · 24/09/2021 00:10

Or..a low to medium block heel. If it's not too hot, I'd choose black boots - always sexy, always chic and easy to wear :)

Lupinhere37 · 24/09/2021 00:18

A lot of the French women I work with wear what I’d call “smart” trainers or loafers, even at business casual meetings. So us British would interpret that as no jacket or (men) no tie required but otherwise, smart workwear. The French women instead wear dark jeans, shirts or cashmere sweaters or Breton type elbow length t-shirts, with “smart” trainers or flat shoes. They never seem to be tottering in heels but do wear plain, low heeled boots when a bit colder. So maybe leopard print trim, or a bit of subtle sparkle or those slip on type trainer shoes with elastic sides in maybe a metallic or dark leather. They’ll pair this with a plain blazer, coat or smart leather jacket. Simple jewellery.
Try Superga, Kurt Geiger or Carvela at John Lewis or House of Fraser. Maybe Office.
My French colleagues are always paired down and low key. You’ll easily buy something in an hour if you plan ahead.
Hope you have a lovely time.

Catouttahell · 24/09/2021 06:12

Thanks so much everyone for the brilliant advice. The look you describe is pretty close to mine, Lupin, so I might not have to buy much to create it. Thank you all!

Absolutely don’t wear heels if you don’t normally.

I’d be fucked with even a low wedge. If he doesn’t like your normal style then he’s not right for you.

Catouttahell · 25/09/2021 05:24

Update: I couldn't get out of work as early as I'd like so had to use what I had... was new black skinny jeans with a 3/4 sleeve black light knit front, voile back top from mint velvet and a v dark maroon little wedge, low front shoe from Van Dal. Most excitingly, we got on great and he was really attractive... in trainers Grin

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 25/09/2021 23:44

Your outfit sounds great and I'm glad you liked each other. What are you wearing for your second date? Grin

Catouttahell · 26/09/2021 10:00

He's asked if we can see each other after work on Monday (while my kids are at sports training) so it will have to be work wear I think! But not including a plastic apron or gloves Grin That's not my every day uniform, just for testing. Now I'm fretting about what to wear to work tomorrow! I need better shoes again...

OP posts:
Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 26/09/2021 22:13

Lol! Yeah, lose the apron 😁

DGFB · 28/09/2021 08:24

No no, take clothes with you in a bag and change in the toilets! Skinny jeans again, a light knit and get yourself some loafers online or something similar.
I wouldn’t wear trainers for several dates yet but that’s just me
