If you're 50ish, what do you wear on a night out?

I seem to have lost my going-out mojo. I aim (with varying success 😉) for understated glam - anything too bold or glitzy looks ridiculous on me, though I love fierce looks on other people. I used always to have a couple of tops that I put with good jeans or a leather skirt, to look a bit dressy, but I feel they''re too young on me now. Looking for inspiration.

Well im 60ish and it varies, i went out for a meal, with my dining group tonight for a meal at a Turkish restaurant and i wore white jeans smart top silky bomber jacket and white and silver trainers. I have to admit that normally dont wear trainers to go out at night but wanted to walk in city, and trainers seemed better than heels. But come late aurumn and winter and will wear more midis /maxis with boots

JFM27 · 25/09/2021 00:00

Should just say im very petite and 6/8 still with reasonably shaped legs would only wear short skirt with opaques and ankle boots.prefer midis maxi as ive long legs for a shortie it
works.

I’m 49 and recently picked up these jeans for £50 ish from brand alley www.theoutnet.com/en-gb/shop/product/j-brand/jeans/wide-leg-jeans/high-rise-wide-leg-jeans/24062987016721065?gbraid=0AAAAADRhcD1S-6aU3eUhdfN2bcyL70Vav&gbraid=0AAAAADRhcD1S-6aU3eUhdfN2bcyL70Vav&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpqXv5t6Y8wIVipKyCh3dgQ9uEAQYCSABEgK8JPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds,

Wore them with a fitted cream waistcoat and low heeled blue mules to a jazz bar and felt amazing. I’d forgotten how wide leg jeans can draw attention away from your middle.

Also as I’m getting older I’m finding plain colours next to my face much more flattering

I don’t know what your budget is like op but I swear by my hush leather leggings! If you want to cover up, add a long blazer or cardigan and you can literally wear any top you like with them. They go with trainers, heels, ankle boots and always make me feel dressy. They are an investment buy at £349 but I love mine!! I’m size 16 by the way with short legs so had to pay to have mine shortened as they are quite long in the leg!

Ratsindahouse · 25/09/2021 02:19

Also check out nice kimonos if you want to cover up a bit, Zara and free people are good for these.

TalksOverMen · 25/09/2021 02:55

Miniskirts, showing lots of cleavage is to me just tacky. Young girls show lots of skin to appeal to men as they usually aren't confident. You will never be 20 and you should be glad!
First be confident, then, if you have a bosom and are a bit overweight, I'd say a silk shirt and skirt combo with/without boots or pumps and a blazer is classy and elegant. Black is slimming and you certainly can wear bright colors for the tops.
I'm 60ish and still have and wear clothes from my 30s because I invested in classic styles: polo neck sweaters, oxford shirts, Chanel type suits. Floppy 30s style trousers or slim fit cords, khakis.
I look great and today got the eye from a similar 60something male with a white ponytail and a hawaian shirt. I liked his look and his confidence! A pity for him that I'm a lesbian;-)

MerryGoRoundBrain · 25/09/2021 07:14

@ShrikeAttack I maybe didn’t explain myself very well. I don’t believe in the concept of “too old” for anything, in principle. But I do feel that I want to look different now. Different things make me feel good about myself. It’s not even about the body shape. I used to wear “loud” patterns to fake confidence. Now I no longer need it.
This is what I meant.

Im with @Bluntness100 I have a uniform I have worn for 17+ years taking me from a size 6 to a 18 and has always worked for me. (Pear shape) but not a fan of my arms either. Oversize longline shirt, various prints / colours - dark skinny jeans / trousers / leggings etc and whatever footwear you fancy. Always get compliments as it hides a multitude of sins and isnt boring Smile

Can I ask for an opinion on this? Definitely not wanting to hijack, just I'm in the same boat. I'm good with day to day style but when it comes to dressing to go out I feel a bit lost. I dont have any going out clothes really anymore and I've been trying to sort an outfit out all week for tonight! Off to a nice cocktail bar for drinks with friends. I ordered this but am really unsure about it! Can I have some honest opinions? Be gentle though Smile

I'm 44 if that helps

Its lovely!
Bluntness100 · 25/09/2021 08:47

Honestly I dont think it works with the boots and bare legs.

MrsVeryTired · 25/09/2021 09:09

@Sunnycats you have good legs but not sure dress is doing you any favours, colours are good on you but shape adding unnecessary volume. I like your boots.

Sunnycats · 25/09/2021 09:58

@MrsVeryTired I know what you mean. I thought that initially when I put it on, but I do have body issues so sometimes I dont know if it's my warped view of myself or actually true! Back to the drawing board I think. Thanks for the opinions!

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 25/09/2021 09:59

Slightly more streamlined shape? This is Zara (and a bit throwaway). The long boots are more A/W 21 - but you may not want to cover your legs.

AlbertBridge · 25/09/2021 10:15

I'm 50 and out tonight. 🎉

I recently culled my wardrobe and, as I was stuffing stuff into bags for EBay I was thinking about the type of look I like. I realised I like "glamorous" things, like gold jewellery, white jeans, fake tan, shiny hair, suede biker jackets, silky black tops, over the knee boots with a mini dress, etc..

None of this is in fashion. 😆 But fuck it. I like it. I want to look polished and shiny.

I detest the current long floaty Little House smocks. I've just ignored that trend completely.

I recently lost weight and it's the best thing for making you enjoy getting dressed again. I did WW and I'm evangelical. Losing 4 stone transformed my wardrobe and I'm finally free to wear what I LIKE rather than stuff that just covers up whichever body part I'm hating most that day.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 25/09/2021 10:19

I’m sad no one approved my out out wardrobe plan* - I do genuinely prefer it to other peoples’ outfits.

*(Truthfully I don’t care what anyone else thinks of what I wear, but I do like talking about clothing choices.)

Its a great outfit but I like to go out dancing and would be way too hot in it!
EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 25/09/2021 10:35

There is that … But if I engage in any dancing this winter I anticipate it will be outside!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/09/2021 10:41

My faux leather pencil skirt died. This thread is making me really want a real one.

Personally, I think black trousers and a sparkly top is a bit depressing.

Bluntness100 · 25/09/2021 10:51

What’s interesting about this thread is what people like is so so varied.

Personally at fifty two I’d not be out in a mini dress and over the knee boots, black trousers and a sparkly top or dr martins, velvet trousers, cowboy boots and a wrap dress, or anything ruffled, and I’m sure what I like to wear others dislike intently or perceive as dull.

Which goes to show op that anything goes, literally. It’s about personal taste, it there’s a variety of it, someone on here has said they like it and wear it.

If the issue is actually just a little lock down weight, is there a chance to loose it, and go back to what you’re comfortable and feel good in? Or is that not possible?

SilverMirrors · 25/09/2021 11:01

Not a night out but I am off to a champagne afternoon tea in this dress www.yumi.co.uk/yumi-navy-foil-wrap-midi-dress/
Wearing with white leather trainers. I am 52 and 5ft3 size 12/14.

Littlemiss74 · 25/09/2021 12:00

Following for ideas as I’m in similar position

5128gap · 25/09/2021 12:24

People keep mentioning cowboy boots. I LOVE cowboy boots! Did they come back in for mainstream and I missed it?

KimikosNightmare · 25/09/2021 12:37

I don't know a single woman over 40 who doesn't give some thought to whether clothes are age-appropriate. I bet you do too, if you're over that age

I'm 62. I never give the slightest consideration as to whether or not what I'm wearing is "age appropriate"

Could you give me some guidance on what is "age appropriate" for my age?
