Got a day at the races in mid October, what do I wear?

I've never been before! It's with my husbands new boss and work mates so I want to make a good impression, I'm overweight (like a size 20/22) so I feel like I look gross in anything I wear Blush So I'll also need some really good squeezy underwear, I keep seeing Conturve pop up on my Facebook newsfeed, are they any good?

I don't have a massive budget. I'm a SAHM trying to get into work and DH's new job has come with a £6k per year pay cut 😬 I guess £100 would be my absolute maximum for everything, so dress, underwear, shoes etc

Please help!

Hello! I don't usually do this and I'm not a style and beauty guru but I did used to have to go racing for work pretty regularly... first question, is it daytime or evening? And which racecourse (if you are happy saying?)

If it's daytime and somewhere like Cheltenham, nice coat and flat boots for walking around outside would be the priority...

What course is important and what sort of ticket? If it's general admission then most race courses I have been to aren't that dressy so jeans and a warm coat. Some courses have dress codes (check their website). If it's the fancier hospitality ticket, there may also be a dress code. Don't go picturing ladies day at Ascot as it's mostly not like that in my limited experience.

Weepingwillows12 · 06/09/2021 15:01

Sorry that sounded negative. I more meant, each event is different so see if the course website gives you guidance but generally smart casual in my experience.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 06/09/2021 15:08

I don't actually know which course, DH didn't say. He just asked me if I wanted to go on a day out without the kids and I was like "HELL YEAH!" 🤣 He's busy now so I can't ask him until later. However, we are in Lincolnshire so if I had to guess I'd say Market Rasen, but I checked the racing calendar for the day he said, so it could be any of these. Which is maybe not helpful, I don't know.

I found this www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/marketrasen/plan-your-day/dress-code/

Sounds like wedding guest style us encouraged so you can dress up if you like!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 07/09/2021 21:27

DH says everyone's dressing up for it, suit and tie, the lot. I've only seen DH in a suit once, and that was for our wedding 6 years ago Grin I'm quite looking forward to this!

I have been to the races a few times in Oct/Nov, coat and comfortable boots are the most important items. It can be very tiring and cold so make sure you are comfortable as you will enjoy it more. Please don’t get shapewear, personally think it will be wasted under a coat and so uncomfortable too.

I think goose1964 has done really well with suggestions. Hope you have a great time.

What is your colouring OP , which colours suit you ?

Ummm, I'm not too sure! I just wear what I like 🤣 people say I look good in red though if that helps? I tend to wear a bit of all sorts, grey, dark green (I don't think I own anything light/pale green), navy. I have a nice dress in mustard yellow too.
