How many clothes do you own?

timemachinewated · 20/08/2021 12:35

Roughly how much of each kind of item, jeans, jumpers, scarves etc?
I had a massive cull over lockdown and feel like I've left myself with barely anything. I keep looking back at photos and thinking why did I give that away!

I have
Jeans - 3 pairs
Jumpers - only 2
Vests tops - about 15
Tops to wear with leggings - 8
Christmas jumpers - 0 (I gave them all away)
Going out dresses - 0
Wedding/christening type dresses - 5
A few holiday dresses
2 pairs of boots
Winter jackets 2
Winter coats 2 (1 I can't wear a jumper under it's a bit tight)
1 scarf Sad

I've spent thousands over the years on clothes, all my wages when I was eating £1000+ a month would go.. and now I've got nothing to show for it and I'm not earning so don't have the money to replace it. I had some amazing dresses for going out in my 20s and they're all gone. I mean if I had them now I'd probably feel too old for them or like they were too short - I see people saying they have items from their teens and I've got absolutely nothing!

What do you have?

Loads. Too much to count.

Not as much as LaurieFairyCake above, though. Finally, someone with more clothes than me!

UserNameNameNameUser · 20/08/2021 23:56

I actually counted up the other day and I have just under 300 items of clothing, not including underwear or accessories. I didn’t tally up by category though, although I know about a third of the total is workwear.

For me that feels about right, but i’d like to store out of season clothes out of my wardrobe.

OP I don’t know how you are managing with just 40ish items of clothing. I’m sorry you are regretting it.

NeedWineNow · 21/08/2021 07:30

By my own admission far too much of everything. I am quite ruthless and have no hesitation in putting stuff in the charity shop bag but I still have got a lot. Handbags are my weakness......

fantasmasgoria1 · 21/08/2021 07:35

2 triple wardrobes and a chest of drawers worth. I also have many pairs of boots and shoes. I look after them and I admit I do probably buy more than I should. It would take me ages to count how many dresses etc I have.

Clem4579 · 21/08/2021 08:55

I'm not going to try and count it all, I have started using Stylebook app though to catalogue it, so at some point will be able to know exact numbers.
I do know I'm the sort of person who feels secure having lots of clothes and accessories (poor childhood, never felt like I fitted in) so the idea of minimal wardrobe fills me with dread.

I try to think of occasions rather than pieces. Right now I'm confident I could get dressed for an interview, funeral, nice meal out, party, day at the coast etc

FlowerArranger · 21/08/2021 09:02

It's an awful feeling looking back and thinking why did I get rid of that

Charity shops are your friend! Lots of (new to you) clothes waiting to be discovered Smile

NB: I'm not too bad as far as clothes are concerned, but I probably have close to 100 shoes... Shock

Blossomtoes · 21/08/2021 09:08

@LaurieFairyCake

15 clothing rails

89 drawers

Approximately 250 pairs of shoes/boots

I have one room 24 by 14 which is my dressing room

Thank you. I feel much better now. My two rails, 13 drawers and around 70 pairs of shoes now feels much less obscene! The
AlphabetAerobics · 21/08/2021 09:23

A huge amount. Percentage I can fit in to? Approximately 10%. 😳 every time I lose a few pounds I can literally have a shopping spree in my own storage.

Not a fan of modern clothing quality - can rarely afford the good stuff.

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/08/2021 10:54

I have a lot (although I think LaurieFairyCake probably beats me, lol). I have a dressing room full to the gunnels, plus other wardrobes. I can’t do capsule and I don’t care! Especially shoes - footwear is my thing for sure. But I keep stuff for years in my defence..

ShrikeAttack · 21/08/2021 12:11

Enough to make me happy, not so much that it causes me anxiety!

A happy medium I think.

TableNiner · 21/08/2021 12:15

38 tops
41 cardigans/blazers/cover ups
24 pairs of jeans/trousers
11 jumpers
16 pairs of shoes/boots

Seems a lot written down! But it’s all in a small wardrobe (or the wash).
Also some of it is worn more in summer and some more in winter.

FlowerArranger · 21/08/2021 12:27

I bought my oldest pair in c. 1979... Grin

Atalune · 21/08/2021 12:55

I couldn’t count. Too much.

Jumpers, jeans and coats/jackets art worst. I have so many.

I do keep a lot of stuff too, to pass on to Dd (some things are designer/expensive) and some as I am in 2 minds about it and want to have the option of rewearing.

I do have a dressing room, so a 3 door wardrobe

Bythemillpond · 21/08/2021 13:03

Could pack everything in a rucksack in seconds. Including shoes.

ArabeI · 21/08/2021 16:03

Goodness @LaurieFairyCake! I too now feel much better about keeping so much. I only relatively recently got a second wardrobe and it's home to the out of season clothes I used to have to put into vacuum bags and then re iron!

@timemachinewated - I had a massive, ruthless wardrobe cull many many years ago which I regretted for a long time. I agree with the suggestions of beginning with looking in charity and vintage shops, and perhaps making a list of anything you need/want.

timemachinewanted · 21/08/2021 17:18

@ArabeI do you still regret it now or did you kind of get over it? Is there any items you still miss?

UncomfortableSilence · 21/08/2021 17:37

I'm ruthless with my wardrobe, I regularly clear out. It's really streamlined and I find it much easier to put together outfits this way. I don't like having a lot of stuff in my house in general and can't stand clutter so it probably stems from that.

I try to buy classic pieces for work, that I can style up and down to mix and match for at home too.

4 pairs cigarette trousers for work
7 fine knit tops
7 blouses/shirts
4 midi shirt dresses for work
2x pleated midi skirts
4x white vest 2x black vest 2x navy vest
3x fitted white t's
3 x jeans
2x blazers
9 thick knit winter jumpers/cardigans
Summer dresses/wide leg trousers
Navy, Black and camel coat
Denim jacket
Cropped leather jacket
Navy, grey and tan leather smart bags
2x crossbody leather bags
Navy/Black loafers
Black/tan boots
Sandals and flip flops

Probably a few other bits knocking about.

ArabeI · 21/08/2021 19:27

@timemachinewated

Oh yes, I'm afraid so. I was thinking about a lovely halter neck top I no longer have, just a few days ago. It was knitted and I think by Red or Dead. Also this thread prompted me to remember a lovely cornflower blue, real silk blouse with angel sleeves.

A friend of mine sounds a little like Laurie and has lots of fitted wardrobes and drawers filled with clothes, some saved from her early teens.

Lovemusic33 · 21/08/2021 21:27

I have too much to count 😬, I have a double wardrobe and 2 chest of drawers. Probably 10+ pairs of jeans even though I rarely wear jeans, maybe 5 coats (one posh going out coat), probably 20 pairs of shoes/boots.

NotMyCat · 21/08/2021 21:36

I'm not even counting. At least 70 dresses just to start with. I have a 3m wardrobe

Oh god I regret getting rid of so many things ShockSad

I got rid of all my DM's in my early 20's - how I've regretted that !

Plus all my leather skirts as they weren't fashionable

Flambola · 21/08/2021 22:38

I don’t have much these days, and I throw stuff out every so often if I don’t wear it because I hate having shite laying around not being useful 😅

If I was rich I’d probably have a couple of dressing rooms and lots of designer clothes. I very much like designer labels.

I'd be too confused to ever get dressed.

I have far too much of almost everything, especially going out dresses. In my defence I never have to shop for special occasions like weddings which makes sense.

Coats, I love coats. I have lost count.

The only thing I seem to lack is enough casual tops. I never find anything I really like.

Hummingbird1950 · 22/08/2021 00:04

I don't know in numbers of each item. It's too much to count. I've got a spare room which is a walk-in wardrobe. I don't throw things out unless they've gone totally shapeless or they've got holes. I buy things I like when I see them, I don't follow fashion in a big way so I don't worry about buying something and then it goes out of fashion. Equally I don't have success waiting until I need something then looking for it, because maybe it's not in the shops at that time. You have enough to work with and could search second hand for anything else you need. Have you considered learning to make your own clothes if you're broke? I watched a YouTube where someone made a summer dress out of a bedsheet picked up cheaply second hand.
