DH is a sweetie but I think he wants me to dress like his mother!

We're going to a do tonight which I was told yesterday is Black Tie. Good thing I did find out as I was going to wear jeans! Anyway, I rushed out and bought this:

www.fcukbuymail.com/ProductDetails.aspx?language=en-GB&ProductID=41X5V&CategoryID=w_dresses

I think it looks rather fab and intended to wear it with these:

www.lkbennett.com/products/shoes/shoesshopbyfabric/shoesshopbyfabricsuede/roberto/pid-25896black

DH, despite saying it looked lovely, has just called me to say that he has bought me a dress to wear this evening. He wouldn't say exactly which one but I've done some digging and it can only be this:

www.lkbennett.com/products/clothing/clothingdresses/clothingdresseseveningoccasion/starlet/pid-28628 pink

And I really don't like it! Help! How can I let him down gently? I shouldn't really be spending money on the cheaper one, let alone the £269 on the other.

He's very kind and does occasionally, and rather impulsively, go out and buy me something expensive, but I rarely like his choice as I consider it too matronly. On the plus side, he says he's bought the size 6 and I doubt I'll get into it, to be honest! For once, I might be glad of the extra weight I've put on!

And, out of interest, which do you prefer?

TBH, I was expecting something horrendous the way your thread title as phrased, but actually, I like them both. Black is prob a safer bet, but I do like the cut of the pink one. Does that make me old? at the price of everything though!

Shape nice but colour a bit for me.

A bit that your Dh would spend that much on you....

colditz · 30/11/2007 10:44

If you're slim, and don't have a flushed face, go for the pink. It's nice. Not at all matronly!

WAS EXPECTING THIS

dressedupnowheretogotilxmas · 30/11/2007 10:44

i love the pink and wow lk bennet

I love the pink too, it doesn't look matronly at all imo. The black is nice too though.

Does your MIL really dress like that?

lou33 · 30/11/2007 10:46

i like both of them

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 10:58

I know, I'm dead lucky so I do feel awful. DH is incredibly generous, but also a little careless with money, TBH. Only last week he was telling me we should be more careful.

Now, I love pink, I'm pink's biggest fan, but that really is PINK , isn't it? And I'm not sure about having my upper arms exposed, nor do I particularly like the high-ish neck on it.

You're right, though - it's not matronly and MIL wouldn't wear it! He does have a tendency to want me to dress "old", though. Having said that, perhaps I am just in denial about getting wrinkly - the big four oh is fast approaching.

Colditz - not sure MIL would wear that one either!

bossykate · 30/11/2007 10:59

blimey how does your mil dress?

both are gorgeous. i slightly prefer the pink on balance.

what a lovely dilemmma and what a kind and generous dh

Anna8888 · 30/11/2007 14:01

TBH I understand your DH being unsure about the black one which isn't elegant enough for a black tie dinner IMO.

Not overboard wild about the pink one (I'd look appalling in something like that) but it's not horrid and is much smarter.

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 14:09

No no NO, Anna! The FCUK one is lovely, the picture just doesn't do it justice, I promise! It's sort of layered and really pretty.

And it isn't that sort of black tie do, IMO. Just a thing at DD2's school. I do have other things as I occasionally have to attend award dinners and other dull dull events but they all seemed too formal.

And I think I'll look a bit like Barbie in that pink number. We'll see ... I'll try it when I get home but I doubt it'll fit anyway - DH obviously thinks I'm rather slimmer than I really am, bless him!

Anna8888 · 30/11/2007 14:14

I understand that the pic might not do it justice - I recently bought a dress that I have linked elsewhere on MN and it looks very dull in the pic compared to on me.

However, I don't think women should wear black to black tie - couples look so fantastic with all the men in black tie with a women like dazzling jewels on their arms .

ScoobyDoo · 30/11/2007 14:19

I like both, what is your dh wearing, what colours?

Could you wear your black heels & a little black shrug or something if you feel your arms are to exposed?

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 14:40

Know what you mean about the black though, Anna. I've a bright pink pashmina I might wear with it, though. DH wearing the usual DJ, I suppose. Don't know. Haven't pulled it out of it's mothballs in the wardrobe yet!

OP posts:
Anna8888 · 30/11/2007 14:47

Have you got any gold accessories (shawl, bag, shoes)? Think gold better than pink with black.

Oenophile · 30/11/2007 14:58

"all the men in black tie with a women like dazzling jewels on their arms"

What a lovely description, Anna!

I prefer the pink, but then I'm a pink fan. The black is nice and could never be 'wrong' but why not go as that 'dazzling jewel' on his arm, especially since it would please him?

It will be funny if you've got it wrong about the dress he's chosen and he turns up with the one in Colditz's link after all

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 15:15

God, I hope not, Oenophile!

I could of course be completely wrong - it could be another altogether. He was muttering about DVF earlier in the week and it is opposite LKB, but I don't suppose he would have bothered to cross the road! Not that it matters, I am enormously grateful to have such a lovely DH! And I may be pleasantly surprised by the pink.

Anna, I have a thick gold necklace but I also have another pretty one with lots of different coloured stones set in some sort of black-coloured metal, which DH gave me for Christmas last year, so I will probably wear that. He'd like that!

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 30/11/2007 15:25

I think both are rather gorg and your DH sounds a delight!
My DH would never buy me a posh dress, not even sure he would even know what size to buy!
Do think the neck is a tad high on the pink one, I think lower necks are generally more flattering.
That said, black is a bit boring, even if the dress is fab.
Have you looked anywhere else?

Oblomov · 30/11/2007 15:45

I think the pink is lovely and not at all matronly.
My dh bought me a lovely top, from Asda, , to cheer me up, after recent events, the other day.
Do you realise what a minority we are , that we have lovely dh's, who even know what size we are, and then they are capable of choosing something stylish.
We are very lucky.

Would it, Cod? I think he just likes to show me off! Funny really, as he's a rugger bugger and not remotely interested in what he's got on! You're just . Go on, admit it ! (Also, I think he gets a bit of a power surge when he flashes the cash, sadly.)

Can't look anywhere else, Pannacotta, the do is tonight. And I only found out yesterday that I couldn't wear jeans!

OP posts:
MABS · 30/11/2007 16:26

love em both, my dh rarely buys me clothes but when he does its always lk bennett funnily enough1, or also Ghost and Noa Noa. Enjoy your eve.

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 16:28

Thanks, MABS

A bit nervous, actually. And I wish boss-man would stop talking so I can hand over some stuff for him to look at over the weekend and bugger off!
