DH is a sweetie but I think he wants me to dress like his mother!

We're going to a do tonight which I was told yesterday is Black Tie. Good thing I did find out as I was going to wear jeans! Anyway, I rushed out and bought this:

www.fcukbuymail.com/ProductDetails.aspx?language=en-GB&ProductID=41X5V&CategoryID=w_dresses

I think it looks rather fab and intended to wear it with these:

DH, despite saying it looked lovely, has just called me to say that he has bought me a dress to wear this evening. He wouldn't say exactly which one but I've done some digging and it can only be this:

www.lkbennett.com/products/clothing/clothingdresses/clothingdresseseveningoccasion/starlet/pid-28628 pink

And I really don't like it! Help! How can I let him down gently? I shouldn't really be spending money on the cheaper one, let alone the £269 on the other.

He's very kind and does occasionally, and rather impulsively, go out and buy me something expensive, but I rarely like his choice as I consider it too matronly. On the plus side, he says he's bought the size 6 and I doubt I'll get into it, to be honest! For once, I might be glad of the extra weight I've put on!

And, out of interest, which do you prefer?

I must make it clear that it's not something he does on a regular basis! Once a year, if I'm lucky!

And he's hopeless at presents, usually - the year before last I got a soup ladle and a box of After Eights. I hate mint chocolate!

I think the style of the black one is something that my mother-in-law would wear (she's in her 80's) and TBH I have curtains that have those layers (not a good look in clothes).
The pink one looks much more like something a younger person would wear.

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 16:44

Oh lordy, you're confusing me now, Joash!

The layers are pretty, I promise! I'm not keen on the high neckline on the pink and it looks rather long (I, on the other hand, am rather vertically challenged!)

WHats your hair colour?

florenceuk · 30/11/2007 16:48

god you don't live in Wimbledon do you (notes LK Bennett and DVF proximity in the village). FWIW I like the pink but wouldn't wear if if I were blonde!

SmartArse · 30/11/2007 16:50

In the area (she says, deliberately vaguely!) And I am very blonde!

Then I'd avoid the pink - but really dont like the styling on the black, it does look frumpy.

I promise it doesn't [SmartArse jumps up and down in frustration]!!

God, I wish my boss would stop blathering so I can hand over, go home and try on the pink (and do my nails, hair, etc. etc. Oh, and feed the DCs!)

DVF is Dianne von Furstenburg. Wimbledon Village has Matches, DVF, LK Bennett, Reiss Jigsaw, Question Air and Whistles and some other more independent shops (tells you something about yummy mummies around that area).

bubblagirl · 30/11/2007 17:03

i love the pink dress dress maybe he really wants you to shine and stand out above the rest i owuld feel so glam wearing that

if you dont want it send to me lol i think its sweet maybe he thinks you were being to safe with black

florenceuk · 30/11/2007 17:03

ooh I forgot Jaeger and some other fancy shop (Bamford?) brora and Comptoir des Cotonniers!

bubblagirl · 30/11/2007 17:05

pink is good on blonde if you wear hair up you have jewelled neck on dress so would look amazing

Oblomov · 30/11/2007 17:18

I am assuming theat Cod's dh has never bought her any clothing. Poor old Cod.

Oblomov · 30/11/2007 17:21

Or Broccoli. I did say that we were in a minority. Many women would LIKE it, no LOVE it, if their dh was CAPABLE of buying them an article of clothing.

and ? what did you wear?

SmartArse · 03/12/2007 10:56

Well, I wore the black, but only because the pink was too small! The pink was absolutely beautiful, I have to say, and I would definitely have worn it had it fitted, but it was too tight on the bust. DH obviously thinks I'm slimmer than I actually am.

Despite the "frumpiness" of the black, I think I looked pretty darned good, actually - probably saved by the fact that it is quite short and my legs are my saving grace! And there were a hell of a lot of frumpier women so I felt fairly confident.

Had a fabbo evening and a mega hangover on Saturday morning, and thank you all for your support. I wouldn't even have tried the pink had so many of you not said the black was dowdy and praised the pink! (I have actually returned it and got the money back - I still prefer the price tag on the black!)

I live in Earlsfield but sister lives in Wimbledon and is deffo a yummy mummy thanks to rich lawyer DH so I've got to know the shops there! Sadly, they are not in my every-day price range and I only ever buy something there once in a blue moon!
