Hate 99% of the clothes that shops are selling!

Hate it. It's been so hard buying clothes for the last 5 years now. I'm 32, pear shaped, size 10 and just want some normal nice clothes that flatter my figure but are also practical.

I can spend hours and hours looking at clothing websites and not like a single thing.

I'm fed up of huge sleeves, ribbed clothing, velvet clothing, massive skirts, tiny skirts, dungarees, tent tops, etc.

Most stuff seems to be tarty or frumpy. Any suggestions for good shops here?

What is your style or what do you like wearing op?

Miseryisabutterfly · 22/06/2021 14:02

Where are you looking? Is there anyone who’s style you like? Famous or otherwise? Do you look at the outfit thread on here for inspiration?

I don’t really understand how everything you’re looking at online looks tarty or frumpy. Do people you see out and about all look tarty or frumpy?

Bellasblankexpression · 22/06/2021 14:03

I feel your pain OP I am the same shape as you

Miseryisabutterfly · 22/06/2021 14:12

Do A-line dresses work for your shape? I don’t think these are tarty or frumpy, you may disagree!

What items and styles are you looking for op? If you give some ideas then people may be able to help.

Sorry everyone, I think I find it hard to decide what I like and what suits me! It's difficult with my body shape, small boobs and fat bum!

I know what i don't like and that is anything too frilly, too clingy but also too big. I don't like long skirts. I don't live in the city and I think that makes it more difficult too.

I'm not too girly girl but I don't want to look boyish either. I like solid colours, well nothing too busy and stuff that fits well. Here's a pic to show my general body shape and what I usual do in my spare time.

I quite like Kate Middletons style before she became duchess.

I'm a fan of t-shirts tucked into a line skirts at the moment. I think that could suit you op.

You look adorable in that photo!

I wear a lot of denim shorts with shirts in warmer weather and also love a straight cut shirt dress which might work of not too loose for you.

There is so much online at the moment. You could also see if there are Instagram accounts you could follow for your shape and size. I've found that really helpful...a bit too helpful and I've had to pause my Instagram account lately as it was a bit addictive Grin

beeloubee · 22/06/2021 14:39

I'm not too bothered about people saying my face so here's another pic. I also quite like the beachy style.

You are gorgeous and have a fab shape. Those shorts really suit you so buy more! Would you wear culottes? I think they’d be lovely on you with vest/t-shirt/cami.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I wear tops tucked in a lot so maybe I will look at aline skirts. Shame that maxi skirts are so popular as I think they would swallow my frame, wish I could get away with it.

Haha thanks yeah it's probably my chubby face that makes me look cute lol. I always been told I'm cute!

Never thought of looking at Instagram, thanks for the suggestion x

Aww thanks so much, that's really nice to hear. I've been feeling down this week as have had a bad neck so have been off work and feeling guilty about resting.

Yes I love those shorts too, they are so comfortable and I'm actually wearing them now. They were from joules. One of the few shops I can buy stuff from. Although I don't need anymore stripy tops from them lol.

Wish I could look more put together but I think that's difficult when most of my time is walking in the countryside and gardening lol.

Yes got a few t shirts, I'm definitely a t shirt girl.

I really struggle to find good shops. I think there must be loads out there that I'm unaware of that could be good for me. X

It looks like you like simple shapes and colours, and a bit of practicality over anything too fashiony.
Look at Crew clothing, at some of the outside brands that do casual clothing -Billabong, Roxy, Finisterre, Patagonia, Howies and even Mountain Warehouse on a budget!

minipie · 22/06/2021 14:55

Ah I think I’m I’m a bit like you OP. Anything too frilly or oversized just looks daft on me. Anything really short is out due to my thighs. Unfortunately that rules out a lot of the current trends.

Sounds like you would like a preppy style. Try Banana Republic, Gap, Joules, Boden (the plainer stuff not the slightly crazee patterns), some H&M, J Crew, Everlane, Abercrombie.

Do reconsider maxi skirts though.. the plainer non frilly non pleated ones can be very flattering if you are smaller on top than on bottom. this for example. And it’s a way of looking more in fashion without fully embracing the frills.

minipie · 22/06/2021 14:56

Oh and French brands like Esprit, La Redoute.

minipie · 22/06/2021 14:57

Haha cross posted with the Joules recommendation

Oo yes I have finisterre on fb, so expensive though. But maybe worth it.

I have never heard of patagonia and I have never looked at crew clothing so will have a look today.

Yeah I like plain clothes mostly. Shorts and t shirts.

But I also like wearing shirts, skinny jeans and boots when I'm out in town or in the winter.

Op, check out surfdome website, I think the brands they stock might suit your style.

mustlovegin · 22/06/2021 15:19

How about Gap or Uniqlo?

mustlovegin · 22/06/2021 15:21

There were some nice brands stocked by Debenhams which could match your style, but I don't know what happened to them now

Bellasblankexpression · 22/06/2021 16:33

Op where are your shorts from you look fab? Although you are way less chunky of thigh than I am!

mustlovegin · 22/06/2021 17:00

These are the ones I meant

Mantaray
Maine
Red Herring

Miseryisabutterfly · 22/06/2021 17:57

What about FatFace actually?

Serenster · 22/06/2021 18:06

Baukjen might suit - they have a lot of plains coloured, relaxed-fit clothes. They are not the cheapest, but often have sales.

newnortherner111 · 22/06/2021 18:45

I am with your sentiment, OP. If you can speak French or Italian perhaps look there for suggestions, as they have the concept of style. This country's clothing retail offering is awful.
