Just reviving this to see if anyone can enlighten me!

Could you look at John Lewis as they have a range of styles?

I think fashion seems to be getting more and more casual. Would this classify as a going out top?

If you are only seeing crop tops and bodies you must be looking in shops aimed at teens and twenties! Definitely avoid!

There are loads of nice shops for women. Cos, whistles, Hush, anthropology, even Oliver Bonas... John Lewis is a great shout because they have lots of brands.

coralcavesenormouswaves · 27/06/2021 11:28

I agree with pp about fashion getting more casual too. The going out top plus jeans is a bit of a dated look sometimes... what about a dress?

Loserinlove · 27/06/2021 11:45

@coralcavesenormouswaves I mean tops o can wear with trousers or skirts. Yes I need to avoid but I’m struggling to find nice going out clothes!! I’m fine in the day time but going out I want to look sort of classy yet sexy... not with crop tops or holes cut out of clothes... John Lewis feels old!

It is NOT a stealth boast at all but I look younger than I am, that doesn’t mean I’m trying to dress ‘young’ but I don’t want to dress middle aged. I’m single so trying to get out on the dating scene and I want to look nice! A top I tried on last night made me fee frumpy!

Just have a look, they do lots of more youthful brands. Or house of Fraser even. If you're going out dating you may not want to look very young, maybe look for more sophisticated rather than overly sexy? Loose clothes are in fashion right now and can look very sexy

River Island..

or New Look:

Don't know if they're your style, just chucking some ideas. I'm also in early 30s, look younger though and I'd wear those xx

KillingMeDeftly · 27/06/2021 17:33

John Lewis feels old!

It isn't all cashmere twinsets and floral smocks at John Lewis these days! They stock plenty of "younger" brands - All Saints, French Connection, Levi's, Whistles, Mango etc.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 27/06/2021 18:14

Sezane? What's your budget?

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 27/06/2021 18:17

You can find just about anything on ASOS or Zalando.

DuzzyFuck · 27/06/2021 18:20

Sosander?

Loserinlove · 27/06/2021 21:18

I don’t really have a budget. I’d love to have even just a couple of ‘going out’ outfits that fit well and look nice on me! I’ll have a look at some of these, thank you.

I swear I’m not having a mid life crisis, I’m just really stuck on clothes right now!

I’ve got a few nice tops from mint velvet, John Lewis stock them, next do too. Used to get most from oasis but don’t like their online stuff as much.

Laquila · 27/06/2021 21:45

Definitely Whistles and Hush.

Salanda · 28/06/2021 00:25

I’m in my 30s. I feel like Hush/Whistles/Mint Velvet and the like can feel a bit conservative for me.

I’d look at Sézane, Rouje, Kitri, Ganni, Bellerose, or for inspiration on different brands - Outnet, Selfridges, Liberty….

How about these?

Loserinlove · 28/06/2021 06:10

@Salanda yes conservative is what I mean not ‘old’!! Thanks I will have a look at those suggestions.

I also used to love Oasis (and warehouse) but they have gone down hill for sure since the stores shut

Loserinlove if you say which of the sugfestions are in the right direction for you people will know what else to suggest.

CoffeeChocolateGin · 28/06/2021 06:40

Thanks to this thread, I’ve discovered Sezane! Loving it!

Laquila · 28/06/2021 09:03

Love the first two you link to, @Salanda

Salanda · 28/06/2021 09:07

@Laquila - I’m so tempted to buy the black and white polka dot top from Rouje for myself!

@CoffeeChocolateGin enjoy Sézane - there’s always a lot on EBay and Depop and similar too - I’ve got some good bargains from there. Sézane currently have a sale on as well Wink

Ozanj · 29/06/2021 13:01

Depends on your style and where you are going out. I prefer H&M, Zara, and Asos at the moment because all the other shops seem to have become a bit over 50 in terms of style. Ted Baker used to be good for a casual but pretty top to go out in but it’s also become frumpy recently.

Loserinlove · 29/06/2021 14:48

Thanks all. Some of the sezane is ok but not what I would class as wearing out? Yea I used to love ted baker @Ozanj but yes has changed recently! I’m just looking for some classy yet a bit sexy tops for dates and going to bars for a drink of an evening? I don’t wear dresses very much but I’m looking for maybe one or two but definitely tops are a struggle!

Reiss or Ted Baker
