I’ve had a bit of a revamp in style, I wish I were 20 years younger! I like this. I’m only 5ft5 so wouldn’t be as short on me and I’m a size 6-8
I’m also 37.
Too old?

I’m always popping up on these threads to say ‘wear what you damn well want at whatever age you like’. Have to say, I’m really not struck on that dress though - or pleather in general - it just looks....sweaty. A genuine leather pencil skirt is a great classic, so I’d go for that if anything. But maybe you aren’t in the head space for classic and are in more of a ‘bugger it’ phase? Especially if you’ve put up with comments from your mum about your appearance. If that’s the case, have loads of fun and go really inappropriate Grin that dress is too tame! Also very much too tame for a dominatrix - and I know one or two.

SarahBellam · 02/06/2021 21:39

That’s the sort of think Mazekin from the TV show Lucifer would wear, and she is smoking’ hot. Biker boots and fishnets would look amazing with it.

Ninkanink · 02/06/2021 21:43

Good god no.

Not because of age, mind. Just it’s hideous.

The second one is much nicer.

SionnachRua · 02/06/2021 21:43

I love leather (and dominatrix esque looks Grin ), I love that style of dress...but I'm not sure about that particular dress. It looks like it could be unflattering if you're not a runway model and the material looks a bit cheap and sweaty.

Still, the worst possible outcome is you having to return it, no harm in trying it out.

RoRosmama · 02/06/2021 21:47

I think it's gorgeous! And you're not too old at all. I'm 35 same height and size as you and I'd for sure wear it. Who cares what other people think. You only live once. Go for it! 😊

lakesummer · 02/06/2021 21:51

Wear what you like.
But often if a model struggles to make something look wearable it isn't wearable.

ThuggeryAffair · 02/06/2021 21:59

Oh god yes wear it! I'm 50 and I bought a pleather jumpsuit this year. I expect I look a right sight in it and I really don't give a fig. I like it and I hope I've got years ahead of me wearing exactly what I like. How sad to look back and always have made the safe and inoffensive choice.

Divebar2021 · 02/06/2021 23:19

I don’t have anything against pleather but where are you planning on wearing it because wearing it directly against your skin seems exceedingly sweaty

ViciousJackdaw · 03/06/2021 00:08

Who are we to tell people what to wear? OP, if you like it then get it. At size 6-8, you'll look alright in most things. If it turns out you don't like it, just send it back - problem solved!

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/06/2021 07:11

I came on here to say Wear What You Like regardless of age. Then i saw the dress you were talking about. Please don’t ever wear that. Ever, ever, ever.... oh god, my eyes.....lol

Panaesthesia · 03/06/2021 07:20

Where exactly do you go where you'd wear a plastic leather-look mini-dress?

It looks like a child's Halloween costume.

withlotsoflove · 03/06/2021 08:44

Exactly! I’m almost 50 and wear what the fuck l want. I’m sure you look fantastic in it! Wink
FloconDeNeige · 03/06/2021 09:13

I think people are being rather rude about the dress, tbh. Fine if it’s not your cup of tea but no need with the ‘hideous’-type comments.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 03/06/2021 09:29

@Tistheseason17

37 is young. If you love it - wear it!
I agree with this. Wear what you like at any age!
Ninkanink · 03/06/2021 10:31

Ah I was a bit shitty yesterday, sorry @Sunbeamvan.

If you love the dress then that’s all that matters. You’re certainly not too old to wear it - there is no age limit for wearing things you love that make you feel good.

Mermaidwaves · 03/06/2021 10:58

Age isn't a problem but imagine how hot it will be! It's making me feel claustrophobic just looking at it!

BrilliantBetty · 03/06/2021 11:12

Nah. In wouldn't. And I'm 7 years younger, similar size.

I doubt this dress would be flattering on many people, regardless of age.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 03/06/2021 11:57

I remember when I was 37 thinking I was too old to wear certain things.

Wear what you like. You're now as young as you will ever be again.
A good rule of thumb is if it's your body in the clothes, then it's irrelevant what anyone else thinks.

There's some strange fashion shit going on at the moment in the UK clearly, pleather with frills????

5128gap · 03/06/2021 12:07

Its nothing to do with how old you are, the suitability depends more on your style and how the rest of you looks. So, if for example you have a hairstyle that is safe and conventional or very typical of your age, it may look a bit incongruous. Also I think you would need to be super confident in it as its definitely a dress that has the potential to wear the woman rather than the other way round.

Feelinghothothottoday · 03/06/2021 12:09

Did I miss the rule book written by a man as to what a women should wear and at what age?

Clementine183 · 03/06/2021 12:38

I actually think women are far more damning about what women should and shouldn't wear than men are, they're generally pretty open-minded (or indifferent) about these things!

I like the dress Grin but I'm 41 so would obviously never consider it (ahem).

Sunbeamvan · 03/06/2021 12:49

I agree, it’s women quite often - not men - who judge what other women look like.

Most men just judge women's overall appearance, usually simply in terms of 'hot or not', rather than individual garments and their age propriety.
lolacola77 · 03/06/2021 13:07

You're not to old to wear whatever you want. However this is a cheap, tacky and quite repulsive dress. If you're slim you'll look good in anything and there are a million better dresses out thete

Ninkanink · 03/06/2021 13:18

I certainly wouldn’t judge you for wearing it...but I don’t think it’s a nice dress.

However what I think shouldn’t make fuck all difference to you, and you didn’t actually ask for opinions on the dress.

The notion that age is what makes a dress/shoes/outfit/whatever appropriate or attractive (or not) is misogynistic claptrap and I won’t buy into it. So if you love the dress, go ahead and wear it. The fact that you had to ask would make me question whether you truly love it, though.
