What would you wear as a bride in your 40’s?

DS is getting married low key in august - she isn’t on here but asked for options. They’ve been together forever and teen kids but decided to do it to sort finances (and probably because they can keep it small)
What would you chose to wear if you could do it again? She fancies white/cream/pastels as it’s summer but not long. Average height, pear shaped about a 14. Loves a heal and happy to be a bit different.

A fifties style dress from fairy Gothmother. Perfect with coloured shoes and matching under skirt.

What about that fabulous outfit from the post last winter from the woman who had a north of Scotland wedding and asked for suggestions? Her outfit was stunning !!

DSis got married in her 40s, went shopping with her, found a beautiful evening dress and then she changed her mind and bought a wedding dress.

You look lovely@LunaNorth. Did you have a big thread about choosing the dress?

MerylSqueak · 17/05/2021 06:59

LL those BHLDN dresses are gorgeous. For once, I regret having a life where I will never, ever need one. Sigh.

LunaNorth · 17/05/2021 07:33

@MerylSqueak - yes, I did! I was reading through it the other night for nostalgia’s sake - it’s a lovely thing to look back on Smile

MerylSqueak · 17/05/2021 07:48

You look lovely in the dress you chose. It wasn't my favourite, but seeing it on you, it suits you down to the ground.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 17/05/2021 07:59

I got married at 40. First dress I chose was non-wedding dress style.

About a week before the wedding I felt sad and decided I did wanted a "proper" wedding dress. So had a panic to find one and get it altered in time.

Managed it though and so glad I did

Love this...another vote for Bombshell.

Would also look at a silk dress from this range.

would it be weird to wear a bright shoe? She loves shoes.

As long as she wears two bright shoes not just the one Grin
Yes, I think bright shoes would look lovely.

I second Ghost dresses. I wore this one to my wedding when I was 39. It was really flattering even for a woman who had 3 children, looked expensive but wasn't!

sausagepastapot · 17/05/2021 17:50

I love Vivien of Holloway and had one of hers as a back up dress on my wedding day.

I'd check the Temperley sales www.temperleylondon.com/clarisse-ruffle-dress-white.html

I got married last Feb at 42. My dress was from BHLDN as others have recommended. Shipped from America and then altered here, think it was £550 ish in the sale. Gorgeous thick material which hung beautifully. We had a winter wedding so I wanted long sleeves.

There are some gorgeous styles on their website www.bhldn.com

Really I just love showing my dress!! I have zero body confidence so it was a very daring dress but I felt so beautiful with a edge of sexy sophistication I hope!

Oh thanks and wow, some of these dresses are amazing. I’m going to send her the links. Never heard of that bhldn company- they have some really different ideas don’t they. Are you taking a bit of a chance though? You’ve got to love it without trying on.
Fab. I want to wear some of these now, I can do that at her wedding can’t I? Grin

Yes I totally did but the quality is fantastic. Ordered on Monday and delivered by Thursday. I think trying a few on first I got a gist of my style but couldn't find the exact thing in the shops. With a good seamstress it fit like a glove.

motogogo · 17/05/2021 19:27

I'm her age and if I remarry I will be having the dress I didn't have in my 20's because I was sensible. Something a bit boho, lace in antique gold. She should choose what she will love not "older bride" clothes

Redannie118 · 17/05/2021 19:31

The only answer is to wear whatever you bloody like. I hate this whole " oh you are over 40/divorced/got kids/ wrong body shape etc so you have to look as bland as possible" bullshit. If she wants to wear simple and classic? Go for it. Vintage? Same. Huge white crystal ballgown? Yep Point is it should only be HER choice.
Btw i got remarried at 42 in a tiny register office do and wore a scarlet ballgown and a crown. My little sis married at 40 last year and wore a white lace vintage tea length dress, with rainbow glitter irregular choice heels.

motogogo · 17/05/2021 19:33

Ps there's a gorgeous one in the window of the dress shop, does exist (unfortunately the small matter of paperwork needs to be done, haven't bothered divorcing yet)

diege · 17/05/2021 19:37

What motogogo said! I'm getting married next year (will be 52) and am wearing this. The dress I wish I'd worn 20 years ago!
