Style dreams vs reality!

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 09:40

In my style dreams I'm well turned out in a good quality well fitting t-shirt top, lovely non faded dark jeans and beautiful tan leather ankle boots. I also have the coats and bags to match of course.
In reality I'm wearing a grey oversized top and cheap leggings from boo hoo. All finished off with a pair of black frilly polka dot ankle socks.
Are you in a style dreams vs reality situation or is it just me?

Ha! In my style dreams I look like Cate Blanche tnt in a super cool suit heading off to do a robbery. I seem to be in jeans and a tatty jumper cleaning the oven! Somethings gone very wrong.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 09:50

@Whymrsrobinson something has gone very wrong for me too! I could easily be wearing the jeans/nice top combo if I wasn't too fat to fit into the one's in my wardrobe unfortunately I seem to be going for comfort rather than style, I don't know what's happened to me.....20 year old me would be disgusted Blush

In my style dream I'm swanning around wearing Comme de Garçons, in reality it's all sweats for warmth and comfort. Sigh.

Ginfilledcats · 21/04/2021 10:56

I'm planning my return to work wardrobe after Mat leave. In my head I'm going to have knee length pencil skirts of beautiful quality and cut, a gorgeous silk blouse that fits perfectly, tucked in of course, a tailored blazer that matches the skirt, and nude pointy stilettos, with my black Chanel tote bag a la Rachel from Suits.

In reality I'll likely squeeze my mum tum into some high wasted tapered trousers (because high waisted is life) and have a blouse on that juuuuust about contains my breast feeding MELONS, and of course isn't tucked in because no one needs to see my spare tyre(s) and a blazer likely picked up from Tesco's.
And flat loafers also from Tesco's because there's no way I'll be able to walk in heels again after not wearing them for 18m.

Sigh. One can dream.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 11:27

I'm working nights now until Sunday, in my style dreams I'll be wearing beautiful matching loungewear. My hair will be up but sexily tousled and glossy.
Reality: still in cheap boo hoo leggings and grey top, hair a fuzzy frizzy mess. Face slightly haggard from lack of sleep Sad

I have this problem with leggings. I want to be able to effortlessly pull off the white t-shirt / leggings / denim jacket look - but my arse is so big it throws off the whole look.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 11:36

@Ginfilledcats please treat yourself to the silk blouse and skirt, I bet you'll feel amazing! Obviously you will still need the other things you mentioned but if you can find a shirt that controls the melons there is nothing stopping you wearing it with your high waisted trousers aswell!

Ah I think we're all a bit like this. We buy clothes for the lifestyle we want rather than the lifestyle we have in reality. Or I do anyway. Going 'out out' clothes used to be my issue. A hangover from my youth when I went out more. I don't need these clothes!

I've been doing a capsule wardrobe type set up lately and one of the upsides is that I am forced to wear everything in there, at least once a fortnight, if not once a week*. I don't actually wear leggings since I started this. I have got rid of clothes which don't fit and aren't likely to fit any time soon as well. Ok, a couple of things are in storage in my loft rather than completely out of the house, but I don't have to look at them Grin.

I have about 20 items in my wardrobe, I think, it changes, but currently 4/5 pairs of shoes for the whole year and 2/3 coats for the whole year.

I really love this way of managing my wardrobe. I think I look better. It helps that everything more or less goes together and I don't have too many colours in there.

*except one thing, which is my interview suit! It's my only 'just in case' item(s). Even for events like weddings and funerals, I can sort something from what I have in my everyday wardrobe.

Needed a full stop there!

Ginfilledcats · 21/04/2021 13:36

@JustGiveMeGin I happily would but I'll look nothing like Rachel does in suits lol. There'll be all manner of pudge and rolls bursting at the sides.

I was hoping to treat myself to some new bits with the personal shopper thing in John Lewis. Not sure if that's running though at the moment.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 15:22

Hmmm, a lot of style dreams seem to be affected by weight? I know mine is! The minute the weight goes on my confidence goes along with the ability to fit my arse in the stuff I want to wear🤣
I might start a protest to ban leggings....they are stopping us living our style dreams and letting us gain a bit of podge without noticing I will probably be wearing them whilst I protest, might as well get my wear out of them before they become illegal

Oh in my head I really want to be Parisian chic. I read the threads, I look up the clothes... in reality I just love colour and patterns so I mostly walk around looking like I’m en route to Mardi Gras.

quarentini · 21/04/2021 16:24

My style dream was comfy casual and easy to wear .
2 years ago I got rid of most of my wardrobe.
I now have 10 dresses, 4 coats, 4 footwear.
Everything goes and dressing is easy.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 16:47

@quarentini no jeans, trousers or leggings? What about jumpers? I feel cold just thinking about it!
I know what I should be wearing but I keep pulling the comfy unstylish outfits out of my wardrobe.
I also have some lovely pj's but still end up going to bed in a slouchy top/mismatched bottoms....I feel all hope is lost for me Grin

OP posts:
quarentini · 21/04/2021 16:51

I have no leggings and no jeans 😮
I layer up or not obviously weather dependent under dresses and with tights

PollyThePony · 21/04/2021 16:56

I don't wear leggings, but I love my jeans!

What do you layer with @quarentini? Dresses on top of dresses? Or do you have knitwear as well?

Whymrsrobinson · 21/04/2021 17:42

Just give me gin ( great name!) am the same, what is it with lovely pjs in a gorgeous bedroom and they turn into tatty t shirt in a room of gloom. Agree with the pp, my teenage self would be appalled! As is my teenage daughter. Sigh.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 17:56

@Whymrsrobinson I love looking at Rosie Huntingdon Whitely in her slinky matching pj's on the m&s website and imagining myself looking like that at bedtime....I mean does she look like that when she wakes up?
I also got a bit obsessed with the woman in Behind Her Eyes on Netflix, the story was shite in the end but my god her outfits and nightwear where stunning!
Anyway I'm still in the grey top and boo hoo leggings, I might treat myself and change into my loungewear joggers before work tonight Grin

OP posts:
quarentini · 21/04/2021 17:58

I wear long line best, thin long sleeve tops , silk slips underneath. Just layer up accordingly

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/04/2021 18:24

In my dreams I am wafting around in a floaty summer dress in a delicate floral pattern.
In reality I look like an obese Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 18:41

Now wearing white missguided joggers and a different grey top .... I'm going to get a sign for my hallway that says 'abandon style all ye who enter'

Maybe I'll get my mojo back when lockdown is properly over and I have somewhere to go other than work or maybe I'm too far gone for style redemption?

Yes I want to look like the ladies I’ve pinned on my Pinterest board - mom jeans with tucked in v neck tee , biker jacket , tousled waved hair and crisp clean white plain trainers.

My reality is I’m in workout leggings , baggy t shirt , combat jacket and bike trainers , hair either hanging straight like curtains or in a trunch bull bun to highlight my chubby face Sad

I want to look like the ladies on Pinterest ( big massive foot stamp ) Envy

RubyWooRed · 21/04/2021 18:49

Nike trainers not bike trainers ffs , I probably look like a mad fat cyclist anyway in the crap sports gear Grin

RomainingCalm · 21/04/2021 18:58

This is me too MrsMostyToasty.

I want to wear floaty floral tea dresses with little cardigans in pastel colours with naturally wavy hair and sandals.

And then I see a photo and I look like Brendan O'Carroll in Mrs Browns Boys. It's horribly disappointing.

JustGiveMeGin · 21/04/2021 19:04

@RubyWooRed I'm foot stamping with you!
