Help me choose Barbour jacket colour

Sountheastcat · 14/04/2021 12:19

Hi, I want to buy a new jacket Barbour Beadnell for my Bday.

Which colour do you like?
Navy or Sage? ( I don’t want olive or black/ brown)
I was thinking sage but then I already have a similar non Barbour jacket in same style and colour.
I never had a navy jacket.
I want it to look young and classic ( not an elderly lady coat)
Also which colour wears better in time?
Thank you.
Posted in AIbU for traffic as need to decide today.

I’ve had both for work and the navy used to show up the scuffs more clearly.

HOkieCOkie · 14/04/2021 14:05

I have a sage wax Barbour jacket good investment.

NotSureWhyIDidThis · 14/04/2021 14:06

Navy - For what you need, given you don't have the colour.

Itwasgoodwhileitlasted · 14/04/2021 14:08

I liked both but I went for the Navy. I've had similar to Sage/ Khaki from other brands and invariably go off the colour after one season.

Hoping to wear my navy Barbour for a few years!

@MrsTulipTattsyrup
That’s interesting.
I am very close to get the navy as it looks smart.

I looked on eBayto see the colours in various lights and I noticed that the sage and olive also showed the scuffs a lot,some of them looked badly scuffed I suppose they all show it at one point.

Waxed jackets don't stay 'smart' for long as the wax wears off and they begin to look 'worn'. You can rewax them yourself to make them look new again (ideally done outside on a warm day) They also tend to smell so fine in the country but not if you are going to spend time in close proximity to other people (probably not an issue at the moment). If you carry a bag on your shoulder the wax will wear off and you will get a wet shoulder when it rains (from experience). They are great jackets but have a particular look, feel and smell that you don't get from a picture.

MythsandSparkles · 14/04/2021 14:49

It depends why you don’t have a navy jacket already to be honest.

I don’t have a navy jacket but that’s because nothing in my wardrobe works with a navy outer layer.

If you’re the same then getting the navy is a waste of time and money.

If you have a sage colour already and love it you could view this as an upgrade - and know you’ll wear it because you already wear that colour?

CouldItBeCake · 14/04/2021 14:51

I’ve got the sage and love it but it is unmistakably a Barbour and allegations of poshness / shooting connotations are not misplaced! Grin

Sountheastcat · 14/04/2021 14:52

@misskittycat
Thank you.
That's great to know.
I read that the wax can make other clothes greasy.
My MIL has olive one and I tried it on and my hands felt slightly oily. I was also wondering how it is with wearing a bag on the shoulder/ arm...
Thank you

What is your colouring? I really don’t look great in navy ( red hair/ fair skin/ green eyes) so I would always go sage. But DH has steely grey hair and blue eyes and doesn’t suit greens.
So go with the one which suits your colouring.

chesirecat99 · 14/04/2021 15:13

I'm old enough that I remember when I was a teenager that there was nothing more embarrassing than a new looking Barbour so everyone tried to scuff them up as soon as possible Grin

I would share your worries about scuffing. A green scuffed up Barbour just looks like a Barbour that is doing its job. A scuffed navy one might just look a manky old jacket.

Ginuwine · 14/04/2021 15:14

@Lockheart

YABU to post this here. Get whichever you want, there's nothing unreasonable about it.

TheGumption · 14/04/2021 15:15

I feel like...neither...but navy if you must.

Amelia666 · 14/04/2021 15:16

Sage.

Sountheastcat · 14/04/2021 16:08

@chesirecat99 hmmmm interesting point about the scuffing really.
Well I like khaki or that particular Barbour sage colour.
From the beginning I was going for a Sage colour but then I though I got another jacket in similar colour...
I know navy looks great too but if it looks too soon like an old manky coat then no - thank you very much.
And the green jacket I already own is a bit a padded so I wear it in milder winter too a lot but the Barbour is more like autumn/ spring coat..
Mmmmmm... interesting points..
Seems like I know nothing about Barbour jackets at all really.
Thank you

@Happytentoes
My colours are rather bright really.
I’m not very keen on dark colours like navy or black.
I like pink, green, mostly like khaki, sage green or medium green, pine green.
Hence I never even thought about getting one in navy..

@MrsTulipTattsyrup when you said you had both.
Which one shows more detailing?

HowToBringABlushToTheSnow · 14/04/2021 16:13

I have this jacket (in dark grey). I love it and wear it on all my dog walks, but it's not particularly 'young'. Don't get me wrong, it's a really classic, classy look, more 'timeless' than 'young'.

Sage definitely more classic than the navy.

Ah. I wouldn’t ever have bought one to look smart! Mine were used when I was working on archaeological sites, which is why I’ve managed to wear two out by the time I was forty! To me, a smart coat is a good wool one. You’ll find a waxed jacket too smelly to use for an everyday coat, I expect. They really honk. Especially when you leave one on the back seat of your car in the sun all day.

As above. They were for digging in the rain and snow. I can’t recall what any detailing looked like.

I live in the country - they aren’t fashion coats but ones for riding and working in. I wouldn’t buy one for elegance.

ClarkeGriffin · 14/04/2021 16:29

I hate both. You wanted a coat that makes you look young and that looks smart, so you chose a wax coat that will look awful in a few weeks, although they look awful now. Maybe it's the pictures, but they look like something you'd see in primark.

Keep searching. There's better out there surely.
