What to wear over those floaty midi dresses in the evenings?

This is really putting me off buying dresses. I live in NI, and it is rarely never warm enough to sit outside in short sleeves. Even inside a restaurant can be nippy in the evenings.
I love the look of the short, leather biker jackets over floaty dresses, but I won't want to keep that on all night. Anyone any ideas?
Don't say pashmina!Grin
Cardigan? Blazer?

I love floaty dresses but don’t like jackets or blazers (always feel awkward in them) so I wear a cardigan or a hoodie (not a sporty type hoodie, more a fashiony one if that makes sense. Orwell and Austen have nice ones, sometimes hush.) A cropped fitted style (similar in shape to a leather jacket) looks better than a big baggy cardie IMO.

However another look is a slouchy jumper over a dress and that weirdly looks ok.

If you like jackets, a denim jacket (doesn’t have to be blue) can work like a leather jacket too.

Cardis are actually in fashion at the moment...

PineappleCakes · 05/04/2021 11:10

Cardigans. Or if you're feeling more adventurous one of those knitted vests, if your dress is long sleeved.

Personally, I always wear a long slip and thermal leggings under my dresses when it's cold. And even a thermal top if I'm expecting to be outdoors for long.

Soothes · 05/04/2021 11:13

I'm hankering after a Jersey biker jacket, but I haven't found the right one yet. Lots seem to have very narrow sleeves.

A colleague who always looks lovely, wears a very long cardi, as long as the dress, with hers, but I suspect I wouldn't look as good

Howshouldibehave · 05/04/2021 11:15

Cardigan-especially a floaty waterfall type one.

bravotango · 05/04/2021 11:16

Anything knitted that's semi cropped - so it sits around the waist rather than hips

Standrewsschool · 05/04/2021 11:18

Denim jacket, blue or different colour such as this

jacket

shrug

Probably EWM is not where you expect to look, but I purchased a lovely cardigan/shrug from there whilst visiting a garden centre. Can’t find the one I purchased, but the above shrug would work.

Cowbells · 05/04/2021 11:36

denim jacket or cropped cashmere cardigan.

Nooooooo! Waterfall cardigans are dreadful. A cropped boxy one is the way to go.

Well, perhaps in your opinion. I know that anything boxy looks terrible on me.

I wouldn’t dream of telling anyone that the suggestion they made to an OP was dreadful, though!

I wear a selection of short cardigans that tie at the waist, i have a soft knit warm one in black and a lot of different coloured ‘popcorn’ ones like this one

I have cardigans from Arket which work brilliantly for this - quite boxy, v neck, in an alpaca wool mix. I love them so much I have four in different colours collected over the last few years. They are neat enough that I can wear a denim jacket on top.

OverByYer · 05/04/2021 14:50

Cropped denim jacket or cardigan

Boscoforever · 05/04/2021 15:48

Love the Arket cardigan, thank you so much Judy, and everyone else for the suggestions. Lots of ideas.

If ots cold you definitely can wear a leather jacket all night, or a denim jacket, cardigan, suede biker jacket?

BitchIAmFromChicago · 05/04/2021 15:57

H&M do some lovely chunky rib knit cardigans for about £17.99. I bought one in black last week and I love it!

Alsohuman · 05/04/2021 16:30

Those Arket cardigans are lovely. So nice to have pockets.

Faith50 · 05/04/2021 16:32

I think denim and biker dresses give floaty dresses more edge than say a cardigan.

Denim shirts come in different colours and are softer looking than leather jacket and can be kept on indoors. Look on ebay

MrsMaizel · 05/04/2021 16:43

A lightweight knit jumper eg www.zara.com/uk/en/basic-knit-sweater-p01509015.html?v1=85788283

Carycy · 05/04/2021 18:55

I’ve got a gorgeous couple of broaderie anglais type things. One is a blazer and one is a sort of fluted sleeve structured open Cardin type thing. Broaderie anglais seems to go with everything summery. Both are last years Zara but sure they will do something similar this year.

Cropped denim jacket or cardigan
Yes cropped denim jacket for me too. Or if it's colder in the evening, a leather jacket.
