Do you need a crop top over a sports bra?

Stupid q but when you buy one of the new crop style sports bras. Can you wear it as an actual top or do you need something over it??

I’ve put on a stone and want to buy a crop/legging ensemble to shame myself back into workouts until I can be seen in public in them without extreme muffin top! (Gone from 11st11 which I’m happy with to 12.11).

Example below:

Personal Choice. Do what you want

SummaLuvin · 04/04/2021 12:18

If you feel comfortable to be seen in it (and you don't have very large boobs that benefit from the double layer of compression) then no need for a top over it.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 04/04/2021 12:23

In the privacy of your own front room, no. Elsewhere, it’s up to your personal judgement.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 04/04/2021 14:34

I think you should, but doesn't mean you must.

MeadowHay · 04/04/2021 14:36

I wouldn't wear one alone with the exception of perhaps when I used to do pole fitness. But that's just personal preference, I wouldn't think anything of seeing someone else in one alone.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 04/04/2021 16:01

Presumably you mean in public? Personal choice, but I would wear a vest over it, particularly ones like you have linked to that do look like a bra, rather than a crop top.

WhereAreWeNow · 04/04/2021 17:25

I wouldn't but I guess it's down to personal style/choice. I wear a sports bra for running, under a top.

MrsPsmalls · 04/04/2021 17:27

I definitely need a top over it!

GertrudeTheGreat · 04/04/2021 17:52

I've got a sports bra which looks great on its own. I've been tempted tbh, but haven't been brave enough yet.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2021 17:54

I would wear it with a top over it

Salanda · 04/04/2021 17:55

I apply the same rule to sports bras and to non-sports bras - they’re underwear and I wear a top over it....!

However I do see a few women out running with just a sports bra so you wouldn’t be the only one - it’s personal preference.

MazekeenSmith · 04/04/2021 17:56

If you're running outdoors in the summer then it would be mad to wear a top if you're comfortable in just the bra but at the gym you should wear a top IMO

fruitpastille · 04/04/2021 17:56

Top over unless just at home.

PoTheDog · 04/04/2021 18:02

At home, I'm all about just a sports bra. Doesn't get caught up or fall over my eyes and I like to see my form if I am doing yoga/pilates.

In public, I'll usually be running/cycling and will always wear a full length t-shirt. I don't feel comfortable in crop tops in public, it feels too "look at me" somehow. And I don't like people seeing my stomach jiggle, even though it's pretty flat. But I don't particularly think anything of anyone else just exercising in a crop top, except sometimes being envious of their confidence!

mooonstone · 04/04/2021 18:03

I don’t. I have worn bralets and sports bras as outerwear for years. It’s not that different from wearing a camisole, body suit or crop top, as the same areas are covered.

I am 23, these tops have been fashionable for the past 5 years. Does anyone remember when the Calvin Klein bralet was everywhere?

The top linked is a completely normal item to wear outside with leggings, it’s basic activewear

Redcrayons · 04/04/2021 18:06

I’m way too wobbly to wear that in public without a vest or top.

It’s up to you though.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/04/2021 18:06

I'd always wear a top over it unless I was at home and it was super warm. My gym asks people to always wear a tshirt or vest for hygiene reasons as the equipment was getting extra sweaty when didn't people didn't wear tops!!

randomsabreuse · 04/04/2021 18:06

I can't, definitely need an extra layer for control of boob reasons. Some I would, some I wouldn't depending on styling. Something like the Panache Sport I'd probably feel ok to wear alone, shock absorbers not so much.

On grounds of paranoia I'd always wear a crop top over a bra with hook and eye fastenings because a failure would be pretty awkward...

mooonstone · 04/04/2021 18:07

try a different sports bra with a higher neckline, and high waisted leggings - you’ll have less skin on show compared to the model and might feel more comfortable. It will basically look like a vest & leggings

Astridium · 04/04/2021 18:09

I have one that I'd happily wear to a fitness class. I'd never wear it out running, however, I'd be worried it would attract the wrong sort of attention.

Sstrongtn · 04/04/2021 18:55

Hmmm I have reasonable sized boobs (G) so maybe a top over. Other than at home, and I have definite wobble but I sort of wanted the shame to spur me onto looking perfect in it ha.

@mooonstone can you link an example as that sounds good

I really doubt any clothes size sports bra is enough for G-cups. I would check out some of the specialized brands like Freya or Panache.

dementedpixie · 04/04/2021 19:03

I wear a panache ultimate underwired bra as I'm 36GG and need to support

BurbageBrook · 04/04/2021 19:19

Personally I would wear high waisted leggings with a sports bra but normally if I just wear a sports bra as a crop top I would make sure it was a pretty high neck one. So I end up with just arms and upper belly on show rather than any boob action as well!
So like this www.pourmoi.co.uk/products/energy-empress-high-neck-padded-non-wired-sports-bra/?source=shoppingads&curr=gbp&kw&cpn=6742789595&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgpjSnpnl7wIVh6ztCh0bGwrTEAQYAiABEgIbsPD_BwE

With some high waisted leggings looks fine. You have to check how thin the top is as some can be very thin and show more nipple than others too.

Coffeepot72 · 04/04/2021 19:29

Last time I was in the gym (a few months ago now!) people dressed quite modestly and you would probably stand out if you didn’t wear a top over a sports bra. However you may wish to stand out, in which case it’s up to you!
