The perfect lipstick - natural but better, more 'finished'

Apologies if this has been asked and answered a hundred times!

I'm a pale skinned red head (not a proper bright ginger but not strawberry blonde either). My lips are still quite full, despite being 48, and still quite dark.

I'm constantly searching for the perfect lippy that just enhances them and makes my face look 'finished'.

Trouble is I'm constantly getting the shade wrong! Usually too blue I think, as my teeth aren't a great white, they're a bit creamier and some lipsticks instantly make them look awful! Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk looked shite on me. I suit a deeper colour I think, I just can't find it!

Pleeeeaaase help! I've nailed a lovely bright orangey-red for proper dressed-up times (a trip to Aldi these days, rather than the pre-Covid hot nights out 😂) , I just really want an everyday lippy, preferably not matte but not high shine either. Fussy much??

Why not try a few good quality balms instead? That works well for enhancing your own lip colour and making you look ‘done’ and that way the colour will always be right.

CovidCorvid · 23/03/2021 14:10

Mac, Spirit?

ThatOtherPoster · 23/03/2021 14:20

What about something coral? I have similar colouring to you and I find it really flattering. Coral or peachy tones warm me up.

My favourite everyday lipstick is this No. 7 one in Caramel silk. It’s a warm nude.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/03/2021 14:50

I'm slightly confused. You say you're looking for something 'natural' so would a sheer lipstick be more along the lines of what you're looking for?
Something like this in 13 - Romantic maybe?

Or maybe this one in Intimate?

Or maybe this one?

Maybelline matte ink - globetrotter - although if that is too dark there are a couple of lighter alternatives in the same colour family. Whilst it is advertised as matte and stays put (best liquid lipstick ever) it doesn't look to matte on.

Twatterati · 23/03/2021 16:10

Some lovely suggestions on here, thank you. I'm in need of a complete overhaul really 😂 and thought a nice, new lippy was an easy and cheap fix!! Will try some of these, thanks x

Burt's Bees tinted lipbalm.

Maxellious · 23/03/2021 16:20

I was also going to recommend Mac spirit too. It's quite a browny-nude but I find it so flattering, I have quite dark coloured lips and suit warmer tones too.

If you need slightly pinker, Chanel mademoiselle is also lovely and a satin finish

Imtoooldforallthis · 23/03/2021 16:26

Maybe not natural enough but I like the burts bees lip shimmer

Tinkletwat · 23/03/2021 16:30

Bobbi Brown Blondie Pink for me, not bought it for a while and I see they've changed the range it's in now. Balls. The quest for my new nude lippy will have to start again.

If I want something with a little more contrast I like Chanel La Raffinee. More matte than the BB

FlorisFigure · 23/03/2021 16:35

Will also recommend the Burts Bees tinted lip balm.

itsevolutionbaby · 23/03/2021 16:38

I second the recommendation above for Clinique Black Honey.
I saw it recommended on here and got one recently, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Carycy · 23/03/2021 16:40

I quite like the beauty pie futurelipstick luxe shine range. I am not a lipstick girl ( ate Matt or anything to sticky) and find these just on the right side of glossy.
I have master sweet ( a peach toned nude) which might be up your street and nude blush which is barely there on me but I am slightly darker complexion than you. If you are a member they are cheap enough to experiment with.

Carycy · 23/03/2021 16:41

Hate matte!

Tinkletwat · 23/03/2021 16:52

Black honey is lovey but whenever I run out and buy another one I can't help but think it's really expensive just for something that looks like a tinted lip balm - I've obviously not found a dupe yet and still throw my cash at Clinique!

Loopyloututu2 · 23/03/2021 17:12

The Bobbi brown tinted lip balms are great, I use the coral one.

RougeNoirSquoval · 23/03/2021 17:21

Ilia multi stick in Ladybird

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/03/2021 17:39

I'm winter colouring and normally wear a bright. But if it's my lips but better I use Mac Plumfull or Syrup.
Anything remotely beige or neutral looks terrible on me. I think its all down to our natural colouring.
Once we can get out again I'd recommend picking a brand and going to the counter and trying as many shades as you need to find your holy grail.

Iheartmysmart · 23/03/2021 17:44

Burt’s Bees Red Dahlia tinted lip balm is quite similar to Black Honey if you want a cheaper alternative.

Twatterati · 23/03/2021 17:54

My all-time fave is Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in shade 33 - this will give you an idea how dark my lips are, as it's hardly noticeable on. I LOVE nude nudes on other people but they make just look washed out and ill.

Have found it the Bourjois on Amazon, so have ordered it, and will try some of the other suggestions on here.

I loved the Clinique Black Tulip gloss before it was discontinued but the Black Honey is too 'blue' toned for me.

Loving some of the coral/peach ideas. Isn't amazing how a new lipstick can make us feel so much better! I might have to modify a mask with a little plastic mouth part so we can all still rock a confidence boosting red lip!

Thanks for all your help - if you like lipsticks/glosses have a look at the thread on here titled (something like) 'a different colour every day in Jan'. Was really interesting, although I did lose a couple of hours to it, ooops 😂

I have similar colouring. Auburn hair, green eyes and pale skin but dark lips. Really struggle as the natural dark colour of my lips really changes colours from how the look in the tube/on my hand!
Mac Faux looks good on me and is my go to natural.
Tried L’Oréal shot of sun peach and was pleasantly surprised! Never really worn orange coral colours but it was surprisingly wearable.

UthredofBattenberg · 23/03/2021 20:15

I too am looking for the ultimate mlbb lipstick. I've found that a sheer rather than matt is better for me.

As pp posters have said, I love Cliniques black honey and I've also got on well with burts bees lip balm, red dahlia is a nice shade.

Also, a recent purchase I really like is Revlons glass shine lipstick. I got it on 3 for 2 at superdrug. The pictures make it look darker than it is, its def a subtle sheer tint like black honey. Have a look at toasting glasses or rum and raisin. I'm going to stock up as its 1/3 price if black honey and multiple shades Grin

Mummyyyyyyyyyy · 02/04/2021 17:53

The clarins lip gloss range are lovely & sheer.

Coffeepot72 · 02/04/2021 19:15

OP, I’m constantly searching for the perfect natural lipstick too. I’ve made many mistakes, all too often ending up with ‘corpse lips’ (not a good look) but the best results have been with sheer lipsticks and glosses, these tend to be easier to wear and more natural
