Want a pixie cut but I think I’d hate it...

Tell me honestly -

I’ve been dithering over getting short hair for at least 20 years. I have very fine hair and I’d really like to stop worrying about ratty ends! And I always admire women with sharp cuts. But... I’m tall (5’9), my hair has a tendency to either pouf or fall really flat and I dress fairly androgynously. I’m 37. Honestly... I’m going to look like my dad circa 1992, aren’t I?

Many years ago, I was inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors to have my hair chopped off. I asked for the same style.

I was young (20ish), slim, and in my head I was going to look just like Gwyneth.

In reality I looked like a middle aged librarian (nothing wrong with that, it just wasn't the look I was going for).

I've never ever dared to try short hair again, but maybe I just needed a better hairdresser, because all the pixies on here look amazing!!

@Cocolapew

The sides need cut more but I'm going to use the clippers on them. Before and after.
Love your hair colour! Do you donthis yourself? I had my hair cut just before the first lockdown last year, from half way down my back to a pixie! Love it! I've been cutting it myself now as we are in lockdown (shaved sides, number one, long on top but thinking of going shorter) but am too nervous to colour in case it goes wrong. Any tips for at home hair colour?!
Cocolapew · 18/02/2021 14:48

Its my natural colour Smile
I've only ever used box dyes or bleached it before I stopped. I found it easy because if it went wrong I just cut it more, I'm quite cavalier with my hair! There was a couple of having to shave it incidents Blush

Honestly it's gorgeous! Really suits you. I've been tempted to shave mine on top to a number 12 but I'm scared it'll stick up like sonic the hedgehog 😂

Cocolapew · 18/02/2021 17:00

Thank you.
Go for it, it will be grown again in no time if it's too spikey.

absolutetelynotfabulous · 19/02/2021 11:35

op has it occurred to you to buy a wig to see if a pixie would suit? I've been very tempted but not quite plucked up the courage... some really nice pixies out there now.

Hi. Have had a very low maintenance wash and go bob with heavy fringe for last 10 years. Varying lengths from chin length to shoulder length. Really tempted to go for a pixie cut but I'm a size 16 to 18 and wear glasses. Scared I'll look like a man. I have my hair cut every 5weeks pre lockdown but my Hairdressers have closed permanently. Bad idea right?

J0nah · 20/02/2021 09:22

PS Loving the photos, especially chocolate. Your hair is amazing!

absolutetelynotfabulous · 20/02/2021 09:56

bad idea, right?

Only one way to find out, @JOnah. Smile

I saw a woman on (don't laugh) Garden Rescue, with Charlie Dimmock and those two young men. The woman was rne owner of the garden.

Anyway, she was definitely on the side of plus size, maybe a 16-18, with glasses and a short pixie, wore Lucy and Yak dungarees. She looked great! Don't think there was anything particularly special about her face and physique that made it work, but maybe just her style and confidence which made her look great.

There are always wigs Wink. It does grow back. The worst haircut I ever had and the biggest haircut regret I ever had, was a mid length one. I was properly traumatised by it! Had to move hairdressers after they fixed it or tried to. I've never had major regret after a pixie cut.

That said, I've never been unsure about a pixie and have be fully prepared whereas the mid length disaster (mullet) was unexpected. So if you aren't sure @J0nah, maybe not.

I grew my hair into a bob over lockdown and wear glasses, I looked like Olive from On The Buses.
I don't know where the misconception that you have to have the proportions of an actual pixie to have a pixie haircut comes from, I'm a 14/16 and look duper Grin
