Dress for a vow renewal on a beach.

Never posted on this board before but I figure it’s the best place.

DH and I are renewing our vows in 2023 when we’ll be at 15 years. I know people think it’s tacky and automatically assume it’s down to an affair. It’s not but we have had a very rocky 2020 and we’ve come through it stronger and would like to reaffirm that. We had a very small initial wedding so plan to do it a little more our way this time. Hence the beach...somewhere warm Grin.

So the dress-it needs to be suitable for warm and beach, I’m 5’8, a size 10 and not busty. Budget of around £250-350. I am open to any colour but would definitely like a small train. It definitely can’t have a low back I will probably need some form of bra (I refer you to the not busty bit). Don’t like off the shoulder either...it feels odd to me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I quite like the look of detachable trains, which gives you more flexibility with the main dress. My sil had a train made from her first dress when she did her renewal. Like this.

I would wear this (but I can't do boho, so the clean lines are better). Again, detachable.

Perhaps you don't want weddingy though...

I’d not thought of a detachable train...that’s genius. I’m quite happy to look weddingy...it’s going to be a relaxed affair but I would like to wear a dress and for it to feel special.

The dress in the second picture isn’t something I’d pick though-I’m not sure how confident id feel in that.

Surely it depends where the beach is!!

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 22/01/2021 22:27

Not 100% decided yet, but in the running is Cyprus, Portugal or a Greek island.

You'll need a loose fitting dress if it's on a hot beach made of natural fibres.

nowlook · 23/01/2021 06:34

This is natural fabrics and beachy. Too Victoriana?

I'd look at Heidi Klein or Melissa Odabash, you could have a pretty beach dress with matching bikini.
They've both got sales on.

Doesn't it bother you that all of your friends and family will assume forever that one of you has cheated?

Why not just go on holiday or have an anniversary celebration?

Soontobe60 · 23/01/2021 10:03

If its not for another year or so, I’d wait til nearer the time. Then choose something in cotton or silk - any other fabric will be sweltering!

Tehmina23 · 23/01/2021 11:03

I would never assume someone cheated just because you're having a vow renewal.

The Ghost dress is lovely.

Onlinedilema · 23/01/2021 11:07

I would go for a simple wedding dress, sleeveless and flat shoes, no heels.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/01/2021 11:34

@SomersetHamlyn our friends and family...the important ones that will attend the renewal are fully aware of the difficulties we had last year. Anyone else who wishes to judge can go fuck themselves quite frankly!

Now I’ve cleared that up-I’ll go look at the suggestions Grin

That ghost dress is amazing! 😍

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 23/01/2021 11:39

The Ghost dress is pretty. As is the first link from waltzingparrot.
onelinedilema - I’m definitely going for flat shoes, maybe even some simple white (or matching colour) sliders.

I agree you've got time, in your shoes I'd be looking at styles I like then watching for sample sales or end of season sales etc.
Know what you want, bide your time then swoop in and get it at the right moment.

Ignore what anyone says about Vow renewals, it wouldn't enter my head if one of you had cheated!

SomersetHamlyn · 23/01/2021 12:36

I was only responding to your own words OP.

Personally I don't think marriage vows are meant to expire, even in tough times - that's sort of the idea - but enjoy dress shopping Grin

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 23/01/2021 12:40

I'd like floor length and bare feet with kind of beachy hair ..I'd like to do it too , I've been married 20 years and couldn't do it because Of COVID

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 23/01/2021 12:41

I've actually never considered the affair thing , what is the connection? I presumed it was just a a sign of love 😬

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 23/01/2021 12:45

I’d ignore the MN comments on vow renewals. Along with baby showers they tend to be disliked. Personally, I think they’re nice. You can never have too many happy occasions in life.

Have you tried ASOS bridal? They have lots of simple dresses that would work for a relaxed wedding: www.asos.com/women/occasion-wear/bridal/cat/?cid=21606
Monsoon have a big sale on at the moment. I like their bridal range.

SomersetHamlyn · 23/01/2021 12:50

Most people assume it's because someone cheated.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/relationships/3241379-What-do-you-think-when-you-hear-someone-is-renewing-their-wedding-vows

Because marriage vows are meant to be for life. They don't need to be 'renewed', they don't have a use-by date.

It's reallt invented by the multi-million pound wedding industry that's managed to find a new way to get people to spend money.
