I want to buy him one for his birthday.
So, the brief is (see what I did there...?)

on-line shopping is good

£50 budget

He is in his 40s so not too teenagery but he is not a formal, suit-wearing type

Big enough for small lappy, phone, some papers etc.

Please help, I keep finding really naff ones.

c'mon, I know it's early and all but there must be some stylish people up??

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:09

Is he the sporty type? Could he get away with a sport style bag?

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:12

Have you tried M&S online?

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:16

no, not sporty. Bit geeky and hippy..
M and S online all are too 'executive' IYKWIM.

satchel type thing, how about these?

mulberry have some lovely ones, you could have a look just to get the idea then look for cheaper.

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:18

but have you looked? I like THIS and it is not really executive

TwigorTreat · 28/10/2007 09:19

I'm not really sure anything like that exists ... a man bag that doesn't make the carrier look like a twunt I mean

squishie · 28/10/2007 09:20

aha they are called messenger bags. search for them.

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:20

That's what I'm afraid of Twig. Sigh. He is quite big, broad and manly-looking and I think he secretly fancies trying to pretend he is metrosexual....

OP posts:
TinyGang · 28/10/2007 09:20

Yes, sorry, agree with Twig there

TwigorTreat · 28/10/2007 09:21

check this site out .. bags of every hue and colour

I think you're going to have to go sporty or geeky to get over the whole 'its a feckin' handbag and you're a bloke ' concept

WideWebWitch · 28/10/2007 09:21

I bought a laptop case type bag for £25 from John Lewis a couple of weeks ago, will see if I can find it online. anyway, it has lots of pockets, is waterproof, fits an A4 hardback book, sounds the sort of thing.

ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:21

A bit sporty-ish?

Black Nike Messenger bag

squishie · 28/10/2007 09:21

ssn that m&s one looks like udders or something, whoever is desiging their man bags has made them rather frumpy.

TwigorTreat · 28/10/2007 09:22

DH says manbags are laughable .. his mate has one .. he is a big big bloke .. he says "xxx has one, 'cos he's so big it looks like a man-purse"

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:22

Fatface is looking more promising.
I also suspect that he would be horrified if i suggested he had two - one 'casual' canvassy one and a leathery one for meetings etc. It would be too similar to me having different handbags to match outfits

OP posts:
ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:23

UDDERS? geez. I never thought of that, now I will go to m&s and seek it out RL, it is going to haunt me now!

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:23

I can't help sniggering myself. While trying to tell him of course he can have a bag!

OP posts:
ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:24

Seriously, check out that black nike bag, it does not look like a fashion statement at all. It is very erm. Modest.

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:24

so, is the general consensus that he will look like a twunt whatever?
(it does seem unfair, doesn't it...)

OP posts:
ScaryScaryNight · 28/10/2007 09:25

LOOK at the BLACK NIKE BAG! (i love it)

WideWebWitch · 28/10/2007 09:26

I think it's FINE if it looks like a laptop bag/record bag type.

squishie · 28/10/2007 09:27

some nice ones here you could search messenger mens on etsy see what you come up with.

WideWebWitch · 28/10/2007 09:27

this is nice I don't think so, I think a lot of men need to carry stuff and a laptop bag makes it look like it's a laptop so fine. I think it's fine whatever!

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 09:27

The Nike bag is pretty good Scary, really pretty good. Except for I can't bring myself to buy anything with the Nike logo on...though I do appreciate it is quite subtle.
