Teams / Zoom calls, lack of sleep.....

Seainasive · 21/10/2020 13:54

What can I do to not look like death warmed up on video calls?

I’m trying to address the sleep thing, but I am 51 and look it.

I’ve never been one for elaborate make-up routines. I also know that none of my male colleagues give their looks a second though.

Any quick fixes?

Blusher, some sort of lip colour, and the soft focus setting on Zoom.

Seainasive · 21/10/2020 14:18

It has a soft focus setting????

Under eye concealer and a lip colour are my go to options when I’m tired. And not wearing dark colours. I don’t care that I’m at home. I still wear a red lipstick some days. Just to brighten up my face.
It’s so unnatural to be staring at our own faces for so long isn’t it!

pippistrelle · 21/10/2020 14:47

Yes! When your video is on, click on the menu next to the camera, then video settings, and it's called something like "Touch up my appearance".

TableNiner · 21/10/2020 14:53

Make sure your camera is higher than your face, look up into it

banivani · 21/10/2020 15:02

Zooms "touch up my appearance" is a godsend. Even so, I'm the absolute palest and pudgiest person in the gallery, always. To the point where I once had to check that the monitor wasn't broken and showing one corner in black and white.

WhereAreWeNow · 21/10/2020 15:40

More blusher and a flattering lipstick. If you're on a laptop rather than a fixed PC, try moving it around as the light makes a huge difference. Try more/less lighting.

As you say, I bet your male colleagues don't give it a second thought. I think we're all far too self critical. I know I really hate seeing my pale, pasty, tired looking face staring back at me in meetings!

Seainasive · 21/10/2020 22:15

Thanks, will play around with lightning and camera angle first. And I may go shopping for concealer. Is Touche Eclat still the one to get?

What?!
EatPrayYoga · 21/10/2020 22:18

The main things I do are under eye corrector, mascara and brow powder.

If you need some colour then blusher and bronzer would help.

Lighting from the front helps.

And now I've learned about this touch up feature I can't believe I didn't know about it!

Unfortunately only Zoom as far as I know. I still look as wrinkly as ever on Teams. Unless anyone knows better?

JustMeAndMyTins · 21/10/2020 22:22

You need Hourglass Ambient Light powder. I use ethereal light to set my under eye concealer but dim light all over makes me look healthy. Rested might be a stretch.

EatPrayYoga · 21/10/2020 22:22

I use Zoom Grin

I hope Teams does have something similar for those who use it!

Youngatheart00 · 21/10/2020 22:24

I use Zoom, and use the touch up feature, which I now see has some kind of sliding scale. I don’t turn it all the way up or I end up looking overly filtered!! Occasionally a Teams meeting is sprung on me which is a horror as there is no filter there!

Gillybobs · 21/10/2020 22:30

Alas we only use Teams but the main tips I'd give are try to sit facing a window (the lighting helps massively), put books under your laptop so you are looking slightly up at the webcam, wear slightly more make up than you normally would during the day (particularly under eye concealer, blusher and Lippie) and wear colour

polexiaaphrodesia · 22/10/2020 13:09

I bought a clip on ring light from Amazon otherwise I look like the crypt keeper. It's this one here and plugs into a USB port. I feel a bit vain but nobody can see and i spend less time feeling horrified by how knackered i look..

Whoops that link didn't work, try this one www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BML3WG3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

hopeishere · 22/10/2020 13:19

I love this thread! I did a lot of experimenting with books to raise the computer up and get the angle and light right!

I've contemplated a ring light!

WhereAreWeNow · 22/10/2020 17:03

I'm always on Teams and there's no filter feature. Maybe we should start an email campaign to Microsoft, begging them to add a soft focus feature to Teams!

grassisjeweled · 22/10/2020 17:45

There's no beauty filter on Teams? Are we sure about that?

OP, my trick is to wear a colour that suits me next to my face. And fake tan.

Sadly yes. I have looked. But they do offer the option to blur your background which I suppose is a beauty filter of sorts, depending on the state of your home Wink
KatherineJaneway · 22/10/2020 22:00

Mascara and a decent lip colour.

Si1ver · 22/10/2020 22:11

There's a filter in Teams built in coming in the next few months. In the meantime, if you're desperate, you can use Snap Camera instead. It's mainly about zany filters but there are a few subtler blurs in there.

Personally I had Botox for the first time. Six months of spending up to 8 hours a day staring at my face broke me.

Cannotcope4223 · 22/10/2020 22:11

Well bollox. Got all excited about this touch up option to find I already it on. Heart broken!

Cannotcope4223 · 22/10/2020 22:11

But... I did spy this...
