Nowhere to go, nothing to dress for, can we go on?

The reality of WFH, lockdown quiet and general stay-home-and-chill, is hitting me square in the wardrobe.

I am ready and willing to do my bit for the retail sector and hit the new season stock. I want to be planning updates to work outfits, or outfits for travel, or wearing to catch up with friends. Rishi, my wallet is open.

But - my diary is empty! EMPTY. Theatre tickets cancelled, friends’ staying home, hotel visits postponed, concerts moved online. And WFFH. No jacket required. Or any bottoms at all.

How do I add meaning to my shopping? What is the point? And can we make hats on Zoom calls a thing?

Also, my diamond shoes are pinching. Grin

I am living for the school run 😂

PersonaNonGarter · 27/08/2020 20:24

There is a serious risk that I start turning up to school in full Shirley Bassey mode if this goes on too much longer.

Ach - just started a very similar thread! Went shopping yesterday paused in front of a nice skirt and thought 'when will I ever wear it?' and put it back again. Meh.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 27/08/2020 20:34

It's tricky isn't it. Pre Covid I already thought it was a shame that people didn't dress up very much anymore, but now the norm seems to be joggers and comfy tops since there's nowhere to go.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 27/08/2020 20:34

Ugh I feel the same way! I've recently realised that whilst in lockdown ice bought 5-6 dresses, several of which were a couple hundred pounds each. And I've got no where to go!! I've been buying for my old life, bit my daily WFH one. I don't even bother putting my camera on for zoom calls so I don't even have that as an excuse to dress up. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I'm so excited to go out to dinner in a couple weeks, but now I'm worried I'll look like I'm going to a red carpet event (not that fancy really) compared to everyone else. But I just want to dress up 😂

PersonaNonGarter · 27/08/2020 20:34

I would not like to be in the skirt selling business right now.

I unpacked a handbag today that I hadn’t used since lockdown began. A beautiful leather bag I used to take to work, which had my lovely 2020 diary inside - completely untouched for 5 months. Such a waste Sad

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/08/2020 20:37

I am big into earrings right now - at least they make a zoom call statement! Also hair accessories. Lots of hair accessories.. Getting to the stage of dressing up to walk the dog and/or go to the co op...

PersonaNonGarter · 27/08/2020 20:38

I don’t know whether to just embrace joggers and comfy tops try to get excited about them? Hard though.

And y y to shopping for a previous life. I bought a light coat in March with ‘work trips to our City offices for when the weather requires a coat but not a Coat Coat’. PAHAHA. Tags still in it.

I think accessories are the best solution - and I am hitting the headbands here - but it’s just not the same as lusting after a lovely new season Jacket/wool trousers/autumn boot combo.

I've just become someone who dresses a bit more nicely at home...

I used to only wear extreme home wear but nowI'm still fully dressed in a bra and nice things until 7pm!

Flymetothesun · 27/08/2020 20:45

Invest in luxury loungewear? Sweaty Betty and Lulu Lemon outfits with vests, tee shirts, sweatshirts and comfy but stylish I tell myself leggings.

purplecorkheart · 27/08/2020 20:47

I totally understand. I fell in love with a formal dress at the start of the year. I had at least eight occasions that I could wear it to but could not justify buying it at the price. The dress is now on sale for pretty much nothing, I have lost a crap load of weight but cannot justify buying the dress as everything is cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

AnaViaSalamanca · 27/08/2020 20:49

I used to be a smug anti-athleisure anti-trainers bitch, but haven't worn much but sports clothes since lockdown bagan. Proper shoes and bags are history. Same for dresses and skirts.

But I am getting a lot of use out of silk shirts that don't look great tucked in (I am short-waised). Silk shirts and running bottoms - my 2020 fashion

Laska2Meryls · 27/08/2020 20:59

I finally bought the perfect £££ tan suede squashy bag that I have been looking for forever when we were in Bologna pre-lockdown ( and pre their lockdown btw) .. Its been sitting in the hall ever since looking beautiful (and unused...)

I have just used my old small travel cross body ( which I took with me on that city break) on the rare occasions that I have ventured out to the local co op or post office ..Sad

I did buy some things in the Toast and the John Lewis sales..including a jacket and some sandals but was looking at them again the other day wondering when I will get to wear them ..

I have already ebayed a dress that I bought for a May wedding which in the end took place with just the couple and the registrar...

JMAngel1 · 27/08/2020 21:01

Are you shielding? If not, get out there. This week, we've had a beach and lunch out day, a meal out evening and mall shopping trip. Going to the cinema on Saturday. It's all there fir you as long as you socially distance, wash hands and wear a mask when needed.

Laska2Meryls · 27/08/2020 21:04

I also dress more nicely at home now, but I am fortunate in that I had left work a few months before all this happened and so haven't had to consider work clothes.. Also I have been looking for my new non working persona 'style (and so the good sales have helped there ..)

evilharpy · 27/08/2020 21:11

I bought a lovely Jaeger navy blazer recently and then wondered why the hell I had bought it when I already have two other nice navy blazers and nowhere to wear them to. Even when we go back to the office it'll probably be something like 2 days in, 3 days WFH. If I have 5 weeks holiday a year that's only 94 working days in the office a year and I have a lot of work clothes that are going to end up neglected.

I love my work clothes but I'm not going to sit in my dining room wearing a blazer.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/08/2020 21:19

Same, OP. Although like pp I am wearing nice things to work from home - not actual work clothes though. I am going to be in once or twice a week after next week and am quite excited (also nervous). I haven't even carried my purse in five months.

jmangel that sounds like a lovely week. I think easier if you are not hunched over a laptop at the kitchen table from 9-5!

actiongirl1978 · 27/08/2020 21:21

I hear you.

I spent on the most beautiful dark green new season didriksons coat and new cigarette jeans in grey.

I am so going to rock the 7am schoolrun bus drop off...

CushionsandCandles · 27/08/2020 22:24

Am I allowed to say how smug and sanctimonious you sound?
Try scrubs and not working from home.
And yes some of us do brave going out too....

pguppgdown · 27/08/2020 23:14

Have just 'turned my wardrobe over', packing away the spring/summer and taking out the autumn/winter garms. Most of the summer stuff doesn't fit thanks to 'coronastone', and I'm too scared to try on the autumn/winter stuff as I know it's mainly size 10's and I'm now an ample 12/probable 14. Ye Gads! Am eyeing up the 'tapeworm chewing gum' on Amazon and planning a balaclava'ed raid on my mothers' Orlistat stash...

evilharpy · 27/08/2020 23:22

pguppgdown I hear you... the Covid 19 lbs. I have about 10lbs of it left but it doesn't want to go.

Ginfordinner · 27/08/2020 23:28

We went out for a meal this week with some friends. It was the first time I had worn make up for 5 months. I did dress up as well. I was so excited to go out I did go a bit OTT.
