Nowhere to go, nothing to dress for, can we go on?

The reality of WFH, lockdown quiet and general stay-home-and-chill, is hitting me square in the wardrobe.

I am ready and willing to do my bit for the retail sector and hit the new season stock. I want to be planning updates to work outfits, or outfits for travel, or wearing to catch up with friends. Rishi, my wallet is open.

But - my diary is empty! EMPTY. Theatre tickets cancelled, friends’ staying home, hotel visits postponed, concerts moved online. And WFFH. No jacket required. Or any bottoms at all.

How do I add meaning to my shopping? What is the point? And can we make hats on Zoom calls a thing?

Well I do three 12 hour shifts each week in scrubs, so when I can get out, I sure do.

beguilingeyes · 28/08/2020 09:21

The good bags are not coming out that's for sure. My semi-smart Radley backpack is going everywhere now.

I've been working all through this but my building is almost empty so I'm dressing fairly casually.

I can't remember the last time I put a pair of jeans on :( Haven't been to a gig since March.

actiongirl1978 · 28/08/2020 09:26

@CushionsandCandles I am going back to my job in a state secondary school next week and won't be working from home and neither have I been.

Just because we want to look nice and have something to dress for doesn't mean we are all swanning around wfh/sahm although frankly it shouldn't matter.

We all have different circumstances and budgets but would like a bit of style and sparkle back into our days.

WowStarsWow · 28/08/2020 10:24

I think you need to make occasions to get dressed for. I can’t really relate as since July I have been back in the office, been to a tiny wedding, and been abroad on a holiday (now quarantining 🙈). We have also had friends over for bbqs, been to stay with family overnight. There’s lots you can do within the guidelines depending on your lifestyle. But it could also be fun to make huge wish lists for the mid season sales which will inevitably happen in a few weeks. Or stock up on basics/splurge on accessories?

WouldBeGood · 28/08/2020 10:28

I feel the same.

I have noticed that when I do go out for meals people are much more dressed up than usual- probably as it’s the only opportunity!

@CushionsandCandles

Am I allowed to say how smug and sanctimonious you sound? Try scrubs and not working from home. And yes some of us do brave going out too....
No, because it's just rude and unnecessary.
user1494055864 · 28/08/2020 12:01

ahh OP, I am jealous. I am back to school next week. I would love to permanently hide away at home and not have to worry about what to wear! But I now need to go and face my public Shock

Eve · 28/08/2020 12:06

I have some lovely shoes I have not been wearing - I have some fab pink suede heels from boden sale last year which I am wearing now at my desk with T shirt and joggers. Only me to admire my shoes but they do pick me up. Smile

QueenPaws · 28/08/2020 12:15

I've just bought this Grin which I adore. God knows when I'll use it!

Laska2Meryls · 28/08/2020 12:28

Here is mine.. She just got a bit excited at being suddenly picked up ..

Laska2Meryls · 28/08/2020 12:54

...and it was a fab city break.. Bologna is great.. We were lucky to go and come back safe before all this really took off ..

Love this. I can socialise with my wardrobe rather than wearing it.

I have a particular version of this dilemma, which is that I'm pregnant and getting to the point that my normal clothes don't fit, just can't justify buying new maternity clothes to wear nowhere - but find spending all my time in joggers and pyjama bottoms is really depressing, I feel so much better when I get a bit dressed up. I've got a few bits from DC1 but they're mostly seasonally wrong (he was a summer baby and this will be a winter one) and also I wore them all to death then. If I were going out to work, to socialise, I'd buy just a few nice new things but it seems such a waste to sit on my laptop in front of Zoom all day!

Hardbackwriter · 28/08/2020 13:13

Meanwhile, DH is back to work on Tuesday (teacher) and decided this morning was a good time to realise that he's put on enough lockdown weight that nothing actually fits so he needs to panic-buy an entire work wardrobe!

Laska2Meryls · 28/08/2020 13:18

Have you got a Sainsburys with a Tu in-store near you Hardback? .. They often have some surprisingly good stuff, not expensive, which may help with maternity clothing , also means DH can grab a couple of pairs of reasonable price work trousers and shirts to see him over until he either loses the weight or can buy something else ..

managedmis · 28/08/2020 13:19

Same here. I'm dying to wear my pencil skirts and heels but at the same time enjoying flats and avoiding public transport!

managedmis · 28/08/2020 13:20

I love you people!

VanCleefArpels · 28/08/2020 13:23

Dressing for dinner is the way forward. Channel you inner Margo Leadbetter. I got sick of looking at all the lovely things hanging unworn in my wardrobe so I decided to wear them. Additional upside is that dressing and putting a full face on used up some time in those interminable lockdown days 😉. Family think I’m mad

GinandGingerBeer · 28/08/2020 13:38

I love that idea @VanCleefArpels Grin
Reminds me of when I decided to see if I could still fit in my wedding dress on out ten year anniversary. Well I could, just, with help from the kids but I got stuck in it. I misunderstood what time DH would be back from work and ended up in it all day, cooked dinner, cleaned kitchen sides...... I couldn't sit down it was so tight.
Kids had gone out for the day so couldn't unzip me Grin

JMAngel1 · 28/08/2020 14:54

@Laska2Meryls. that coccinelle bag is GORGEOUS! you can't remember what it's called please?

Gonegrey31 · 28/08/2020 14:59

Laska you will always associate the bag with a fab trip to Bologna...and happy days, more to come in the future I hope.
My daughter once turned down a job with Coccinelle, much to my disappointment (think of the discounts she would have had!)

Laska2Meryls · 28/08/2020 15:01

JMAngel yes its the Alpha Suede Hobo in Tobacco.. I bought the additional long strap in the shop.. but they have them on their website as well ..
I am adverting my eyes to the sale price Hmm
