I think my hairdresser must hate me

Had my hair cut and coloured at the weekend by the same hairdresser I've been using for about 2 years. My hair had grown loads (just past shoulders) and I was so excited to get it done. I said to take an inch off and put some layers through the ends. Showed some pics. She's cut off about 2.5inches and some layers are really really short. It all ends up flicking out like Ruth Langford circa 2007. I'm absolutely gutted. I can just about tie it up in some sort of messy bun but the layers poke out and look shit. I wish I'd just asked for a trim. God knows what she was thinking with the layers. It looks like 2 different cuts. Never had a problem with her cuts before. I feel like I've pissed her off without realising and she's taken revenge. Can't bring myself to share a picture or go back to see her.

Don't know what I'm hoping for really. Just need to feel a bit sorry for myself.

In 2 weeks it will look better.

Such a shame she was too scissor happy!

VimFuego101 · 17/08/2020 22:55

I've seen tons of posts like this, and DS had his hair butchered the other week. I wonder if they're struggling to work wearing PPE gear?

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/08/2020 23:18

Ouch, how gutting OP. The ruth langsford comment did make me chuckle though; sorry Grin.

I'm sure it isn't as bad as you think though, it never is. We are way more critical of ourselves and notice things far more. Hope it grows out quickly for you. I'd find a new hairdresser.

Lottiebugz22 · 18/08/2020 09:41

Oh no! It'll grow don't worry. Don't go again. I know it's awkward but if you didn't like it you should of told her and got a refund. I'd be ring back up and say I'm really not happy with the cut.

Hairhelp234 · 18/08/2020 20:13

I’ve had this (twice Blush) once was so bad I had it cut very short and the last time I put up with it and grew it all out.

Mixingitall · 18/08/2020 20:15

You have to be specific about layers. I always state long layers, don’t cut my corners and take the tiniest amount off. I also find it helps to not be distracted by conversation.

toastmeahotcrossbun · 18/08/2020 20:48

I've had this a few times. Once they start going off piste and doing their own thing, that's when I find a new hairdresser. Go elsewhere. As pp said it'll be better in a few weeks Brew

StopChelping · 18/08/2020 21:33

I feel your pain OP. My hair had grown to a decent length in lockdown and I was so excited about getting it cut.

Like you, a stylist I knew and trusted. I’ll trade you your Ruth Langford circa 2007.

I have a Gibbs from NCIS. Sad

LionLily · 18/08/2020 22:28

I decided during lockdown it was time to move on after about 3 yrs of the same hairdresser. Whatever I asked for, I came out with a graduated bob.

So I went to another, recommended hairdresser. Now I have a very odd, almost beehive, lump on top of my head presumably formed by the layers she had put in.

It is taking a lot of taming with 230 degree straighteners to get it to sit flat.

MistyMinge2 · 19/08/2020 23:00

Thanks for the replies. It's helped me feel better.

I showed some friends tonight and they confirmed that yes, it's really as bad as I thought, and I'm not being over dramatic. How can someone give you lovely haircuts for 2 years and then go so very rogue. Angry

@stopchelping I had to look up Gibbs from NCIS. It can't be that bad surely?! You have my sympathy if it is.

Now, what supplements make your hair grow faster? 🤔

They just don't listen when they get complacent with you as a customer.

Actually, they just don't listen. Before the very hot weather I asked for a graduated bob as I was desperate to get the hair off the back of my neck. She agreed we talked and discussed. I came out with a chin length bob. I said where is the graduation, she said she had cut it short underneath. Her next customer had arrived and she just was clueless.

Every hair cut is stressful now.

Biotin and the inverse head method.

Shock Not helpful, I know, but I read threads like this and I'm glad my hair is long enough for me to cut it myself (and therefore if it's wonky I only have myself to blame, and I haven't forked out a load of money for a hack job.) I'm still trying to figure out how it always ends up in a point no matter how I cut it...

Meanwhile, I hope everyone who's suffered a hack job has their hair grow out at a speedy rate and they can find someone decent for their next hair cut.

MorrisZapp · 20/08/2020 04:21

Hi Ruth! Anthea here. Who doesn't love a newsreader flick in middle age?

Tbf to my hairdresser it was more the blow dry that pissed me off. The cut is decent enough. I'm growing it too, aiming for a full Sophie Raworth.

MadisonAvenue · 20/08/2020 08:04

Another? There was a thread a couple of weeks ago about disasterous post-lockdown haircuts.

I have a much trusted hairdresser who’s been cutting my hair for years. My hair is past shoulder length, lightly layered and always fell just right. I now have what looks like a growing out Rachel.

Laurie01 · 20/08/2020 08:19

I have an appointment next week. Dreading it now!

MadisonAvenue · 20/08/2020 11:26

Oh, and just to add that one side is more heavily layered than the other Hmm

Sexnotgender · 20/08/2020 11:31

Have all the hairdressers been getting high in lockdown? I’ve seen so many threads about terrible haircuts!

My mum was so excited to get her hair done and it’s absolutely dreadful! She’s changing hairdresser.

I was contemplating a few highlights but think I’ll give it a miss.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/08/2020 12:34

If the visors aren’t the best quality the plastic is too wavy to see through properly.

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/08/2020 12:43

I listened to a phone in on the radio this morning about how the industry is suffering, partly fears about safety in salons, partly people are doing their own now, and, let’s be honest, a lot of people have gone back, had a hideous experience and are not put off going back!

DH has never done anything more ambitious than trimming my fringe before lockdown but with a great YouTube video I’ve got long layers and a really nice shape. Because we were just at home he could tweak it as there was no hurry. I’m never going back. I quite liked my hairdresser but prefer having it done for free at home whenever I like.

Immigrantsong · 20/08/2020 14:53

I stopped having layers for the same reason.

Not sure what it is with hairdressers. I seriously have not found a good one in this country.

What I now do is keep my hair one length below shoulders and get a trim 2 times a year and even then I have to keep a close eye to how they do it.

I am sorry OP. Could she cut it all one length? Call her if she can do something to salvage this.

kwest · 20/08/2020 15:17

DH is hairdresser (of 45 years). His visor was not cheap but distorts the view when looking down to cut hair on neck. Wearing a visor AND a face mask just means that the visor now steams up too. I really don’t think that anyone in govt (or the bodies they consult for that matter) have any experience of actually working in a salon. It’s made the job so much harder (and I appreciate that it’s not as if they’re having to wear full PPE!)

Lurkingforawhile · 20/08/2020 15:22

I’m feeling really worries now about my haircut booked for two weeks time. I got my hair cut shortish and all one length in February I was having shoulder surgery. Actually it served me really well in lockdown because it looked okay but because it’s fine it definitely needs cutting a bit shorter. I’ve booked to go to the expensive hairdressers in town who normally do a really good job. I only go to them when I need a new style otherwise I just have it trimmed locally. I definitely would like some layers put back in but now I’m worried I’m going to get a Rachel or worse!

Lurkingforawhile · 20/08/2020 15:22

And I should say that I feel really sorry for the hairdressers having to work with all the extra PPE. I don’t like wearing a mask and can only imagine what it’s like wearing it all day every day for work.

Amicompletelyinsane · 20/08/2020 15:25

I pointed out the colour to my hairdresser on her chart. I wanted rid of the ginger. So she put brown on the roots and ran ginger thru my hair. She didn't even use the colour I wanted all over my head. I give up. She went through a phase of making me more blonde each visit.... I've never been and never plan to be blonde. I just don't understand how, I want that (pointing) all over. Turns into brown with ginger. I already was ginger with roots. Didn't want to be that lol
