What do you think about waistcoats?

there are a lot about in the shops at the moments....over a blouse with high-waisted trousers or Kate Moss - style. I quite like them but I can't help thinking about the one I had in the 80s with frilly blouse and velvet pedel-pushers - Adam Ant style

I'll try and find some links.

Well, I don't know ... I was quite tempted by one the other day 'cos DD1 (13 year old fashion know-it-all!) said it might quite suit me. In the end I bought a tank top instead, which I'm wearing over a white shirt instead. I think it looks quite cool, but then I'm nearing 40 and losing my touch, probably! I do keep wondering if I'm not a little "mutton dressed as lamb" today.

cardy · 27/09/2007 12:01

Oh dear I have leggings and skinny jeans both of which I wore the first time round . I saw someone on TV (think it was Lisa Butcher on WNTW) wearing one and it looked nice over a blouse.

Tank tops are not mutton..... I think they look good over shirts or long sleeve crew neck tops.

I love idea of a waistcoat but am looking for a more pinstripey suity one. Am bidding on one on ebay. Love tanktops too! I think they jazz up an otherwise boring long sleeved top.

cardy · 27/09/2007 13:16

they have pinstrip ones in topshop

Oh goody! I shall carry on wearing my tank top with pride, then! (Although I definitely had one 25 years ago ... marroon, it was.)

SmartArse · 27/09/2007 13:24

And I wore it with knickerbockers!!!!

TinyGang · 27/09/2007 13:26

Hmmmm ok-ish. I hate that old 70's look with a mans tie on as well though. I hope that's not coming back. Very Annie Hall.

SmartArse · 27/09/2007 13:28

I won't be wearing a tie any time soon, oh no.

cardy · 27/09/2007 15:44

me neither. The blouse I have seen is very pretty with long chiffon sleeves.

OP posts:
SmartArse · 27/09/2007 15:45

That sounds fabby. Chiffon sleeves mean you can dress it up or down (not entirely sure what that means, but hey ho.)

nailpolish · 27/09/2007 15:45

i like them
but i get annoyed that they have that 'racer-back' sort of thing

Sunshinemummy · 27/09/2007 15:46

Like. They look great with jeans and a white t-shirt.

noddyholder · 27/09/2007 15:47

Good if you have no boobs and are skinny otherwise a bit status quo!

cardy · 27/09/2007 15:49

Thanks. Don't feel so much of a fashion victim now.

SmartArse · 27/09/2007 15:51

Today's tank top has made me realise I really ought to start wearing a proper bra, though. My boobs are hanging somewhere around the belly button area, despite not being particularly big and me not being particularly chubby. Old age, here I come ...

janeitebus · 27/09/2007 17:08

Cardy - where do you buy chiffon-y shirts please if you don't mind me asking? I saw one in Oasis but thought it was really expensive for what it was.

Waistcoats - I like them but haven't worn one in years. As said earlier, they don't really suit women with breasts I don't think. Also I get the feeling that they are going to be worn by every Tom, Dick and Harry this Autumn.

lou33 · 27/09/2007 17:10

i have one in born pinstripe but i tend to wear it as a top in itself, not over anything

lou33 · 27/09/2007 17:11

*brown

cardy · 27/09/2007 18:18

I've seen a blouse in Topshop and a cream one in New Look (don't usually go in there but they had some OK things when I went in the other day.

suzycreamcheese · 27/09/2007 18:35

can look good
or a shade off status quo
its a waistcoat by waistcoat situation, i fear..
