Flattering shorts for people with chunky thighs - do they exist?

Duvetstay · 22/06/2020 09:31

I'm 5'8" and a size 12... I have an hourglass figure and if I wear dresses or high waisted jeans I can look quite nice.

HOWEVER I've never been able to wear shorts. My skin isn't too bad and I usually bung some fake tan on but I have chunky thighs that touch at the top (even if I manage to get down to a 10) and I always look monstrous. So usually I give up, but we live in a country town and won't be going anywhere that's not a moor or a field for a long time so need to find something I'm happy in before it gets hot and I can't wear jeans.

Has anyone got a similar figure and found something that makes them look like Kendal Jenner??!!

I'm around the same height, but a size 14. My favourite shorts are high waisted ones from Zara.

They usually do them in several colours every year.

Wecandothis99 · 22/06/2020 11:40

I have chunky legs so o wear maxi and midi dresses or skirts. Gave up on shorts long ago and I feel much more feminine and comfortable in this

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 22/06/2020 11:41

You don't look monstrous OP, you look like a woman wearing shorts.

Do you look at other women and think they look monstrous in shorts?

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 22/06/2020 11:43

Thighs touching at the top does not make them chunky. It makes them thighs.

Try high-waisted shorts if you like high-waisted jeans.

Plusher · 22/06/2020 11:46

Open your eyes, OP.

Thighs that don't touch are very much the exception.

I like Uniqlo men's shorts. Good range of colours and fabrics, nice deep pockets. Cheap.

Puppylucky · 22/06/2020 11:49

I'm the same and feel better in pedal pushers /capri pants which are cooler than jeans but seem to balance my thighs out

Imtoooldforallthis · 22/06/2020 13:01

Chino shorts similar to this, classic you can't go wrong, alternatively denim shorts, either quite short or knee length, nothing inbetween.

Duvetstay · 22/06/2020 15:02

Thanks all.

graffiti I did see those zara ones a while ago and thought they looked good so will give them a try.

I MUCH prefer dresses but they're not always practical.

DO other people's legs touch at the top!!?? I always thought it was just me. Some bigger women look fab in shorts, think it's to do with the shape of one's legs.

I have such a complex about it! My Mil is one of these people who looks good in shorts and always says "golly! You look hot!" if I'm wearing jeans or cropped trousers. Grrr.

I'm also a size 12 with thighs that touch at the top. They're nothing to be ashamed of.

I second the recommendation for the GAP shorts or slightly flared french knicker shorts. Knee length makes me look like I've lost my scout troop. Short shorts can be very flattering.

Embrace your shape. Wear what you like, it's very freeing not giving a fuck. Do you think the majority of men go around worrying about what they're wearing?

Plusher · 22/06/2020 15:08

DO other people's legs touch at the top!!??

Seriously - go for a walk. Have a look. Legs that don't touch at the thigh are like hen's teeth.

PhoneLock · 22/06/2020 15:14

"Golly! You look hot!"

I would take that as a compliment!

shakertime · 22/06/2020 15:18

I'm somewhere between a size 6-8 and my thighs still do touch at the top. I think it's just genetics and how your body is kind of structured. I don't have any inputs on shorts as I'm too self conscious to wear them so I usually go for skirts or dresses

NuffingChora · 22/06/2020 15:25

www.zara.com/share/mom-fit-bermuda-shorts-p08197005.html?utm_campaign=productShare&utm_medium=mobile_sharing_iOS&utm_source=red_social_movil&v1=52135968 These are also great - when they’re not rolled up the legs are sort of A-line and are also a bit longer than normal so lots of space for human woman shaped thighs. You sound an entirely normal lovely size and shape!

Wheresmycider · 22/06/2020 15:28

Tu at sainsburys have some nice bermuda length shorts at the moment. Been wearing the demin pair i bought almost non stop the last few weeks.

Bluntness100 · 22/06/2020 15:33

I’m a ten to a twelve and my thighs touch at the top with a gap above, and my legs are toned, , it’s normal and healthy for your thighs to touch at the top, the only time they wouldn’t is if you have the thigh gap you get from wide hips or being very under weight.

In fact the ideal female legs are supposed to touch in three places, the top of the inner thigh, the knees and the ankles, when you stand with your legs together, everywhere else there should be space.

MikeUniformMike · 22/06/2020 15:51

How about a divided shirt - shorts that look like a gathered skirt?
They aren't culottes. If you know the name for them let me know.

legalseagull · 22/06/2020 15:58

Great thread! Just ordered some to cover my thighs - that also touch Grin

HeyMicky · 22/06/2020 15:59

I have M&S long cotton chino shorts. As ugly as that description sounds, they're not that long at all, very comfy, don't go up your bum when you walk.

I also bought these in black - incredibly flattering and nice and cool www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0817472001.html

Duvetstay · 22/06/2020 16:14

Thigh update!

Due to recent gym closures, significant increase in wine and crisp consumption and upon further examination they don't just meet at the top but approx half way to knee area. Let's just say not my best feature!

Probably didn't explain v well in op, I'm far from someone whose thighs just gently bump at the top! Thinking about it, my 8 Yr old dd who is really slim has legs that touch and she looks amazing in shorts!

I'm loving those h&m ones micky, they look like they're really flattering. Annoyingly they're sold out of nearly all sizes in the plain colours.

Those look lovely too chora, thanks for the tip.

Just ordered these m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0824352001.html which look similar to the other h&m ones so fingers crossed

Another one here with chubbier thighs, I have some from Gap - utility shorts but looking now at their website lots are sold out. I found that Next linen mix shift dresses are a great alternate to shorts and top, we lived abroad in a hot country for 8 months and they were much more comfy for everyday wear and walking the dog.

XingMing · 22/06/2020 17:12

Lands' End are worth a shuftie. I just bought three pairs and apart from needing to shorten one pair to a 7" inside leg, am pleased with them all. Two flat-front chino style, one more skort-ish.

oohnicevase · 22/06/2020 17:38

Next boy denim shorts all the way. I'm short and have big thighs and they look
Ok.. I think you look more normal when you wear shorts on
A super hot day than trying to
Hide in jeans etc !

Scruffyoak · 22/06/2020 17:43

Oh the hm ones are all sold out in a 12. I really don't want to go to a shop...but fear I may have too.

dontdressme · 22/06/2020 17:45

DO other people's legs touch at the top!!??

They sure do!

Women as old as me remember when that was considered ‘normal’; most women develop pads of fat on the thighs in puberty. Some don’t and very obviously that’s fine too. But the ‘thigh gap’ as a desirable female characteristic is a 4chan invention.

(If you have a gap - no shade! We’re all fine just as we are Wink)
