Flattering shorts for people with chunky thighs - do they exist?

I'm 5'8" and a size 12... I have an hourglass figure and if I wear dresses or high waisted jeans I can look quite nice.

HOWEVER I've never been able to wear shorts. My skin isn't too bad and I usually bung some fake tan on but I have chunky thighs that touch at the top (even if I manage to get down to a 10) and I always look monstrous. So usually I give up, but we live in a country town and won't be going anywhere that's not a moor or a field for a long time so need to find something I'm happy in before it gets hot and I can't wear jeans.

Has anyone got a similar figure and found something that makes them look like Kendal Jenner??!!

Even when I was a size 4-6 my thighs touched, same with my tiny 15 year old dd. Not many people have a thigh gap without being seriously underweight. Some apple shaped people do have very thin thighs and get the thigh gap naturally, but most women will not.

But the ‘thigh gap’ as a desirable female characteristic is a 4chan invention.

I've been pointed to this thread by my DP.

The notion of the ‘thigh gap’ as a desirable female characteristic predates the internet. I first became aware of it in the 1970's when a girlfriend was proudly showing of her new brown cords (flared of course). She loved the way that they showed off that her thighs had a gap all the way to the top.

I think I worded it really badly; I meant more along the lines of “if you don’t have one, you’re irretrievably ugly” or something. More that its widespread adoption as a tool to beat women with (like cellulite has become) is relatively recent.

backseatcookers · 22/06/2020 18:05

I think it's very rare for thighs not to touch at all. The only time mine haven't and have had a noticeable gap is when I was anorexic and 7 stone - I'm 5' 7".

I'm sure some healthy very toned and petite people have a gap, not just people who are unwell, but most people's touch at least a bit.

Surprised you don't think it's normal - surely you see other women's bodies and know it's a regular thing?!

Glad to see you've realised it's nothing to feel negative about thanks to this thread.

Also meant to add, @etulosba, that’s a great little image -I love the idea of someone feeling happy and confident in what they’re wearing (or not wearing haha!).

I've had my eye on these for a while: www.thehouseoffoxy.com/trousers/30s-pleated-shorts-navy. They come in quite a few colours.

AnnaNimmity · 22/06/2020 18:30

My tip is to wear shorts that end at the thinnest point of your thighs - then they're the most flattering.

For me it's a few inches above my knee - so that's wear I wear shorts. And yes, it's just about confidence - wear your shorts. Most people are more bothered about their own shorts and thighs.

Railingsohno · 22/06/2020 18:37

And just to say I’m a 8/10 and my thighs touch at the top 😁

JofraArchersFastestBall · 22/06/2020 18:47

My thighs don't touch at the top no matter how much I weigh... because I've got enormous wide hips and slightly bow legs Blush
I've always had a slight complex about it and avoided wearing shorts, leggings etc. Just goes to show we're never happy with what we've got!

JofraArchersFastestBall · 22/06/2020 18:53

Oh, I meant to add. I've got a couple of pairs of these long length uniqlo 'shorts' and I love them. 100% cotton, so comfortable and nice prints. (I think my granny used to wear something similar, but that's not put me off!)

The Topshop roll hem ones suit all body shapes.

I also size up in shorts & wear with a belt - gives that slouchy feel, allows you to tuck shirts in to show shape without being tight.

YouStupidBoy · 22/06/2020 19:10

I got some Uniqlo high rise denim shorts the other day - lots of thigh room!!

Duvetstay · 22/06/2020 19:26

Lots of good stuff here, thanks!

youstupidboy I like those and reviews look good, what size are you/did you order? As a standard 12 I'd usually think a 30 but find uniqulo sizing a bit random.

"railings* I defo think that style would work... Are they flattering round the waist?

I am a 10 - 12 and ordered 29inch; bit too much room though in the waist so could stand to have gone smaller I think.

mrschocolatte · 22/06/2020 20:12

I’ve just bought a couple of pairs from Weekday. Super comfortable and a nice length and material for a late 40s 5’4 size 12 woman with chunky thighs!
