If you have rapidly growing out highlights, what are you doing with your hair until hair salons reopen?

Are you just leaving it to grow out or do you have a good temporary solution?

I've light brown hair and I have highlights - some of which are an ash blonde. They have grown out in a way that looks okay but there's not much blonde around my face and forehead and I hate looking at myself in the mirror and seeing my natural drab brown colour close to my face. I was hoping more grey would grow through as it's a nice white grey but none of it shows. It's around my temples and underneath my hair.

What's everyone else doing who usually has highlights?

Mine is just growing out. I don't look closely or only sans specs.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2020 14:35

Mone is also growing out. I'm trying to turn my highlights pink though to make them look more interesting

MikeEhrmantraut · 15/05/2020 14:38

I mixed 30 vol peroxide with a sachet of b blonde bleach. I used a toothpick to drag a little dot of bleach in my roots and dragged it down to meet where it's lighter. I did the bits framing my face. It is no where near perfect but it's an awful lot better than my very obvious roots.

MikeEhrmantraut · 15/05/2020 14:40

Here's a photo. I do reiterate I am fully aware it's not great but it'll do!

I don't know what those words mean but Iam blinking in admiration, Mike. My hairdresser does my hair, I don't enquire as to what she's doing kicks self for not being more curious

FlibbertyGiblets · 15/05/2020 14:42

Thumbs up Mike. Good job there!

madcatladyforever · 15/05/2020 14:44

I'm currently just looking like shit for the duration.

I have a halo of wiry unmanageable white all around the front then whiteish blond highlights growing out and 4 inches of dark blond roots at the back.

Luckily it's plenty long enough to put in a pony tail.

Beamur · 15/05/2020 14:45

My grey is blending out the hard line very well! Am quite liking my new silvery look.
Not a bad job on the roots above!

LemonyCupcake · 15/05/2020 14:45

Did my own with a kit (balayage)

Really pleased with it !

WickedlyPetite · 15/05/2020 14:49

I've no greys yet - not bad for age 42 - so mine looks a bit like a balayage/root stretch.

JMAngel1 · 15/05/2020 14:51

@Lemonycupcake

Now I want a lemon cupcake!
Which balayage kit did you use please? Trying to pluck up the courage - if I buy a kit, knowing me, I'll attempt it after a couple if glasses of wine but at least I would do something!!! My hairdresser actually contacted me yesterday saying she had had CV and she was testing the waters to see if any of her clients who had had it also would be happy to see her - I'm sorely tempted as I had it in March but surely this is still against guidance.

CarolefeckinBaskin · 15/05/2020 15:11

I'm root stretching! It's a thing apparently.
I've bleached hair (base colour and highlighted)
Too much grey to ignore it so I've been using a semi-permanent medium ash blonde on my root. It's pretty much as close to my natural colour as I'll get and doesn't look bad.

onemouseplace · 15/05/2020 15:16

Ignoring it at the moment - my last appointment was a couple of weeks before lockdown so it's not been too bad so far, but I was supposed to be in next week for my next appointment so it's only going to get worse!

I'm not too fussed about the actual colour of the roots, but the texture of my hair is very different when it grows out.

MikeEhrmantraut · 15/05/2020 15:19

I'm not sure what'll I'll do next. I did those in the photo from watching YouTube videos, my approach to most things in life I have no idea about. It was a faff though.

Quite fancy going completely pink since I'm not going into work anymore. Trouble is I rarely wear make up now and dress in pretty much drudge coloured clothes. I think I'd just look a bit tragic compared to the cool sexy people with bright hair Blush

Doowop20 · 15/05/2020 15:22

Mine is growing through dark. If it was grey the roots would be blend easier I think.

I am contemplating putting an all over dark blonde dye.

fortyfifty · 15/05/2020 15:30

Beamur - I'm envious of your grey!

Mike - that looks really good. I'm so messy when I do anything, I wouldn't trust myself with bleach. I do have an older teenage daughter who is very neat and accurate... but that's a lot of pressure to put on her. Hmm

I'm looking in the mirror and sighing a lot.
My roots are dirty brown and 50% grey and look horrible.
The headband idea appeals but the teens were very sneary so I'm clipping it back and waiting for July.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 15/05/2020 18:10

Leaving it alone as I don’t trust myself to do a decent job!

I have never left it this long (6+ months) between colour appointments in my life - I will have missed TWO root touch up appointments come July. My hair is naturally brunette with blonde lengths so I just have inches and inches of dark regrowth now. On the plus side it looks somewhat like a balayage the longer my roots get. Downside is it will be harder to correct when salons open!

Retailqueenie · 15/05/2020 18:20

I'm using Batiste dry shampoo with a hint of blonde - it works wonders to cover grey and roots...

Minai · 15/05/2020 18:21

I dyed it back to close enough to my natural colour using a box dye. I’m happy with it and planning to leave it alone until I feel safe going back to a hairdresser.

FizzyPink · 15/05/2020 18:25

My roots are dark brown, my hair is a lovely ashy blonde. There’s no way I’m touching it myself and risking breaking it

anothernamechangeagain · 15/05/2020 19:25

I'm putting a toner on it occasionally to stop any yellowing and soften the line of my roots but other than that I'm leaving it.
Can't wait to get a full head of highlights and low lights and an inch cut off.

OhTheRoses · 15/05/2020 20:18

My roots are greyer than I thought. Hair has been highlighted since I was 16. In recent years, blonde, caramel and ashy brown.

About 1.5 inches through now. I am nearly 60 and will embrace it. Have bought myself a pretty hairslide today and am going to brush the front back and hold it in a clip to cover the parting. Front is silver so will hide the rooty bit.

Used to wear my hair like that in my 20s. Will do for a bit.

When all this is over will have my colours done.

OhTheRoses · 15/05/2020 20:20

Oh and am using violet shampoo stuff every other wash. Seems to help.

Lemmings123 · 15/05/2020 20:24

@mikeEhrmantraut how much peroxide did you mix with the b blonde sachet? It looks really good! Love your username btw Grin
