I'm looking for a nice rose perfume for my mum's birthday. Obviously in normal life I'd go on a smelling spree but right now I can't.

She's specified that she wants a rose scented perfume that smells like 'old dusky roses', and I have no idea where to start.

Needs to be available online in the UK, and my budget is about £40, so alas Tom Ford out of the picture!

I used to wear only Tea Rose oil from the Body Shop. It was the best ever rose perfume I've ever used. No messing about, no artificial metallicky dry down. Often people would look to see where the bunch of roses was in a room where I was or had been.

Then the bastard Body Shop stopped making it. I've stopped shopping at the Body Shop completely.

The nearest thing I've found that is pure rose is Jo Malone Red Roses. But even duty free, it's around £60 a bottle, so not really for everyday all-the-time wearing at the moment. The Perfume Parlour does a reasonable copy at a daily wear price, but it doesn't have the complexity of the JM Red Roses.

Bastard Body Shop.

By the way, does Yves Rocher now post to the UK? I love their Chevrefeuille, but they've closed down their UK business, and although I can get it when I go to mainland Europe, it'd be nice not to have to stock up when I'm in Germany or Paris.

Caudelie do a lovely ‘Rise de Vigne ‘perfume. Really good, French and it’s £27 at lookfantastic - normally you can get a gift set for a little bit more money

Dreamingofsunnydays · 05/04/2020 11:56

Should be Rose not Rise

Coronacurls · 05/04/2020 12:05

What one did you get OP? The new Dior Rose n'rose is really lovely.

BaronessBomburst · 05/04/2020 12:12

For a traditional rose smell I'd vote for the Body Shop one.

Portrait of a Lady is stunning and has blackcurrant notes.
Why not order her a selection of rose samples from Skins Cosmetics, or try Lady Annie if she's still on Etsy.

The Perfume Parlour dupe of Le Labo's Rose 31 is good. Not really a gift bottle though, and Le Labo is £££.

Wearing Paul Smith Rose right now. It's a nice light one.

A budget buster recommendation but this is the most beautiful rose perfume from a small French brand available in Selfridges or online from Sniph

slinkysaluki where is the Penhaligon sale? I've looked on their website but there is nothing about a sale.

HighNetGirth · 05/04/2020 15:58

Rose de Mai by Fragonard is lovely, inexpensive and available online.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 05/04/2020 16:25

L'Occitane do a a beautiful rose perfume. It just smells like garden roses and it's all I wear now.

slinkysaluki · 05/04/2020 19:44

Damnthatanxiety. It popped up on my FB feed, i looked on there it was 50 percent off i think

slinkysaluki · 05/04/2020 19:45

Have looked on their website snd you are right nothing on there. It was only a few days ago ?

Spied · 05/04/2020 19:52

I wear Paul Smith Rose. Love it but not sure I'd describe it as 'dusky'.
I used to wear a Body Shop perfume about 3 years ago called Smokey Rose. Not sure if they still do it though.
CK Eternity Rose was beautiful and typical dusky rose, but I've not seen that one for years. Might be worth a look online.

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 05/04/2020 19:53

I really like Chloe Roses. To be fair, I also like Chloe (rosey) & Chloe Nomade (not rosey).

I need to investigate Rose de Mai... I had a Fragonard perfume years ago & it was beautiful.

Spied · 05/04/2020 19:55

CK Eternity Rose Blush

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 19:55

I’ve used Paul Smith Rose since I was a teenage, it’s so lovely and fresh

difficulttod · 05/04/2020 19:56

*teenager that should say

mrsbrightside1308 · 05/04/2020 19:59

The body shop , mountain rose is beautiful.

BillywigSting · 05/04/2020 20:03

Paul Smith Rose is lovely and the one I'm wearing at the moment (having ran out of lady million and clarins eau diamasante).

I have to spray it on my hair /clothes though as my sensitive skin doesn't react well to it.

It smells divine though and dries down to a sort of pleasantly powdery scent

MissMarks · 05/04/2020 20:05

M and S one is great for everyday! Have a whole range to go with it.

DollyPartonsBeard · 10/04/2020 20:16

I just wanted to pop back on and say a big thank you to everyone who replied. I cross referenced all your suggestions with Fragrantica and decided to get Stella.

My mum loves it! She was very impressed that I found a scent that she loves, based on her description.

Gin and Cake all round!
